Welcome back to shop talk, today I’m going to be working on one of my favorite pieces of kit and that’s my UCO lantern. Not too long ago I stumbled upon a reddit post asking about a UCO lantern oil insert. I looked it up and much to my surprise it was actually something UCO sold at one point. Unfortunately, they’re not made any longer, so I turned to RU-vid and found some other people that had figured out how to make your own. I figured I’d give this a go and take you all along with me.
Here's where I got the idea:

pretty awesome work! Good deal on the cost for the fuel too. 16 hours if really awesome. It was good to hear the pros and cons.

Thanks! It's an interesting solution but not a perfect one. I kinda dig it but I like things that force me tinker. 😊 Take care 🏕️🌲

You can save the fuel in the canister if you find a bolt that is threaded the same as the coax nut plus an o-ring. IF all you are using the coax for is to hold the wick, you can use any coupling nut and add a matching bolt and o-ring to close it.

Good idea, I'll try that for sure. Thanks for watching! 🏕️🌲

Nice work. Now, if I had the tool those cartridges are for, or knew someone who did, it would be far more practical than destroying a brand new unit for the experiment. For 10 pounds of wax, I can cast 90 candles to fit the lantern, so, thanks, but I'm sticking with candles.

Kinda wish I tried this before paying $80 for 3 machined ones with proper dimensions and threading with caps. The oil inserts are very versatile, you can use lamp oil, kerosene, vegetable oil, very handy in a situation where one fuel type is scarce but another is readily available. My 3 will go in the 3 candle UCO which can boil water on the top.

It's a bit finicky but does work pretty well. It can get real sooty if the wick is too long though.

Thanks! Have you brought your oil insert on an adventure or do you still prefer the candle? I have yet to bring mine on an adventure.
@My24hradventure
@My24hradventure 2 года назад
@@SignalOutdoors I think I prefer the candles. Less mess, no smell, and I feel safer with them. I took the oil to adventure once but I was anxious about it.

Yeah I could see that. I'll try it out in my hot tent with the snow floor. There's probably a reason UCO stopped making these. Lol

@@SignalOutdoors yeah, it would be interesting to know if safety was their reason. Though my guess is that they stopped selling them due to lack of demand.

I would think a con would be the trouble in making it. lol Pretty interesting though. Thanks for the video

Yeah the candles are clean and don't require much messing around. I'll probably flip between the two depending on the trip. Thanks for watching.

U knooowwww....they sell small kerosene lanterns that also burn diesel which is a lOt cheaper...and...if U want a bigger flame...(more heat) just add some charcoal starter (~ 10 %ish...) in with the diesel/Kerosene and it will burn much cleaner, hotter, brighter...For ur version U cud just use a smaller 1/8th inch wick for better flame control...that's cool but much too fastidious for my taste...
