Freezing your food scraps keeps the smell down but also jump starts the breakdown of the food which makes it easier for the worms to eat. I also found that cutting the center out of the cover and gluing on screen helps with the airflow and keeps the smell down. If doing a indoor bin, be cautious bringing in outdoor items, leaves, in as you will also bring in bugs.
FYI - pvc cement is a two part process. A primer gets applied before the cement. With a threaded connection though, you don’t need pvc cement. What you would be wise to use is either a gasket washer or silicone caulk to seal the hole.
I have to tell you I looked at hours of videos on this. Nobody really shows a good stackable set up with a drain. IMO that's the only way it should be done. I just couldn't figure out how. Outstanding A+++ for you! Thank You!
I have always kept my worms inside my house in the basement. It is a perfect temperature range for them. Since I live in Ontario, Canada, we have colder winters than most of the US. I must say, you did a very good job on your worm bin. Even though I have been composting with worms for 9 years now, I still watch videos because there is always something new to learn from others.
Michael Foster Would you please explain how you make your worm compost bin? I live in Michigan and want to keep them in the house. I don’t want any smell or have them leaking out the bottom. TIA
I've been running vermicimposting bins for a decade and 90% of my bins are clear. As long as you don't have them in a bright room or direct sunlight they do quite well.
Worms aren’t vampire sensitive. If the bins are exposed to sunlight at all, colored bins are also better because they are more uv stable. The darker the plastic the less uv damage.
THANKS! This is just the perfect idea I needed! I've been thinking of ways how to make them migrate easily instead of scraping and harming the worms. Thanks again!
Nice video, thank you for the info and design. :) I never wear gloves, I like to feel the soil, food scraps and the tiny worms myself. I also try to use as many natural products as I can. I don't think you need to buy compost to make a worm bin, because the worms will give you great compost. I keep my worm bin (2 stacked boxes) on the balcony and they're doing great.
OMG! I love your personality! Your video is wonderful and I love how you give credit to those who taught you and the fact that you are so enthusiastic about passing on to us what you've learned. Thank you so very much for sharing and caring.
Very good video by the way. I didn't mean any criticism just general information in case someone thinks they can't make a bin with the clear bins that they already had.
That’s good to hear!! I appreciate your feedback on it!! I was so worried I would accidentally mess it up if I used a clear bin but it’s good to know that it can still work! Thank you so much!
@@ThisFaithfulHome besides Red Wrigglers I also raise African Night Crawlers and they aren't nearly as sensitive to the light. I actually put the bin on the table and watch their behavior. It's rather fascinating. Amazing creations of our God.
Lol! Love This Faithful Home{stead} hahah I love it!:) stoked to see where God is taking you this year. Hopefully a trip to see you guys is in the plans for us this year! You can also put compost in the freezer to keep the oder down. :)
Tehehe I’m glad you like that title! And yessss I would love to see you guys! I’m keeping the compost in the fridge now and David hasn’t been bothered by it!
Absolutely helpful video! Thank you for sharing this in detail! Only thing I wish you would have done differently was not releasing all that plastic (after drilling the holes) onto the grass. I know this is an old video but had to comment this, hopefully for anyone reading and learning as much as I do, to do this part a bit differently so there will be less plastics in nature. No hate, just a hopeful person :)
Thank you Madison. Many blessings to you and David. I just now found your channel and immediately had to subscribe. Your personality and selflessness really shine. So looking forward to seeing your journey. By the way, FANTASTIC job on the 3 tier worm bin setup. You did an amazing job and describing every step in the process. I'm putting one of these together today for a friend who wants to start a worm bin but doesn't know where to start. This is a simple gift to help someone get going. Thanks again for documenting everything so well.
How has this system worked out? I've seen this before and my thoughts are the drain holes will clog with bedding/castings.. I've gone with screen and a crushed stone base for drainage. I'm doing a single container system now and do the half/half clean/regenerate. Curious how your system is actually working?
I 100% think blending is necessary especially if your doing this for the end product vs just composting scraps. Good video, I also feed corn meal, rice and old bread. I find mixing dry ingredients in one container and just having it on hand makes feeding quicker as well. That would be dried used coffee grounds, corn meal, egg shells, oats, bread crumbs, shredded paper. These things don't rot and can be kept together in say a big Mason jar or coffee can. Easy to get into a food processor easy clean up very little mess and you could save time.
Hi I’m new to your channel I was thinking about starting my worm journey farming after buying worm poop🥹$$ every year. I’m so ready to get started! Thank you for sharing very informative 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Oh yeah I’m zone 5-6a Michigan 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
If you pop the leaves in the oven, , like advised to do when buying bags of soil -that have been outside- for indoor plants . It should kill anything living, but I would suggest spraying them down just I bit first cause they will dry.
This is so helpful! I’m just curious, what happens to the spigot when you rotate the bins? You seem so sweet, is your channel open to buddhists as well? 🥰
Good question! So the bottom bin is solely for the run off water and such. So that one will never rotate to the top! Just the other too. And yes everyone is welcome and I love to hear other people’s beliefs and backgrounds!!!
Add another layer of cardboard to the bottom of the top bin and add food scraps on top of that. The worms will move from the second container up to the first. You can then use the second bin compost in your garden or to make worm tea/compost tea.

Unfortunately I can’t find the link to the original one. The drill bit for it will depend on the spigot you get! You can always search plastic spigot on Amazon as well :)
I personally wouldn’t do it inside, but have heard others have success with it! Maybe if you can keep them on a porch or garage space? Or try the kitchen and see how it goes! You can always move it if it’s not working for you!
I don’t think you will find it to be smelly. The worms will chew through the scraps at an amazing rate. Having it handy might make it easier to start, but I think you will find the rate at which you cycle through small bins to be tiring.
I’m not quite sure! I’m still new and learning about it myself. I would check out Hey It’s A Good Life on RU-vid. She does amazing worm compost videos!
Really nice till minute 9 when you drilled the holes in the plastic containers on the soil, and then cleaned all the little plastic residue on the soil, aaa wtf?! not ok, really not ok, I mean even if you did clean up afterwards, some of those parts definitely are really small and can't be found so they remained in the ground micro-polluting ..... jezzz. You really have to be careful, I mean you seem well intended but not in every part of the process. Hope this helps you be more conscious for future projects. Also it's weird that no one else mentioned something about this in the comments, hope you're not keeping only the positive comments without the negative or the one with feedback like mine, it would be a shame.
I don't often write comments, but I have to say one thing about this video. That you make videos in nature is wonderful, but that you leave small plastic particles from drilling simply on the meadow? That's terrifying! Plastic unfortunately does not compost in nature! But otherwise I find the idea quite great!
I actually really appreciate you pointing that out to me!! Gosh it didn’t even cross my mind that I was going it! Thank you for the support for the video as well as so kindly mentioning this part without being rude! Thank you and I’ll be mindful of that in the future!!
