I trash picked an old overhead projector that I tried to turn into a video projector. The results are actually quite satisfying given the relative ease of pulling this off. Plus, I did it all with salvaged/trash picked parts. Free home theater! Yes!

Another way to support me (without having to spend any more money than you normally would) is to use my Amazon affiliate links.
If you buy stuff on Amazon, you can use the below links to get to your country’s Amazon site and I will get a small share of what you pay there. You can buy whatever you like and use this link as your regular Amazon link if you want to. The price and everything else stays the same for you. I consider this an okay (and easy) way to give me some support.

I bought a fold up 3M overhead projector from goodwill about 5 years ago for $10, and last night I found a Kodak Carousel slide projector in a dumpster and looking to make something with one or both of them. I also bought some binoculars for .50¢ at a garage sale a week ago. What I have in mind is a movie projector, and/or some sort of telephoto lens for my smart phone or a monocular and/or a microscope.. I’ve only taken apart the binoculars and the part that is next to your eye that has 2 lenses, I flipped one around and it makes for a pretty good loupe. I also have another pair of binoculars and an old Pentax EI200 digital camera with a zoom lens that I purchased back in 2001/02’ when digital cameras were still sorta a new thing and expensive. It still works too but all of the things i mentioned are at my disposal. Have a pair of reading glasses too… lmao.

Sure thing, mate. I binge watched some of your Civ stuff today while fiddling around with electronics on the workbench. Just like the old days!

I remember watching my teacher putting the pictures in upside-down and then flipping it. Then looking at the crooked image on the screen while she yelled in the auditorium about stuff I didn't care about. 😁

I made one of these probably 8 or 10 years ago and my setup looked exactly the same as yours. Those boards for the horizontal and vertical were in the way on mine too and the only way to remedy that would be to get another ribbon cable where they plug into each other at the corner so you can lay them out away from the LCD panel. That is a very fine ribbon cable and not too easy to mess with but it could be done. I had a lot of fun with mine but I ended up not keeping it because it was just so bulky to mess with. Would be fun to build one again though.

Yeah, they are fun to play with but take up a lot of space. I gave the one from the video to a friend who does graffitti art. He uses it to project sketches to walls now. :)

you could just replace entire power supply with 12v power brick since you dont need backlight inverter anymore

I did this years ago, was always worried about "Death by power supply" as 240V isn't a tickle, I think I put the power supply inside a tupper ware box.. I played killing floor on it, got massive motionn sickness, I had a 10 foot by 10 foot screen. And it was hot enough that I didn't need my heating on, I did prop the LCD part away from the monitor with blocks of wood and a PC fan to blow between the projector top, and the screen itself... This was mid 2000's I think. Good fun

They may have had the projector plugged into a circuit with a lot of things running on it. Every time they turned the projector on it tripped the RCD or blew a fuse. Not because the projector was broken, but because the circuit was already at capacity before the projector was turned on.

Yeah some appliances that run on 208/230v need their own line and circuit breaker. I wonder if a step down voltage stabilizer/transformer would work? I’ve had problems getting my 208/230v in-wall AC unit to work ever since my apartment replaced all the old baseboard heaters with new energy efficient ones that don’t have the Nema 6-30r like the old heater in the living room had. I’ve tried making a 20’ extension cord with 6-30r/10-50p ends to draw power from the 10-50r stove outlet and have had no luck. I wonder if that’s sort of the situation you’re talking about or no? Edit: I ended up finding 2 different 120v window mounted AC units and gave up on tinkering with the 240v one. But I’m looking to maybe do something with the parts inside if I can’t sell it for more than $100 since it’s a $800 AC unit.

nice, i just find one trow away and bring it home, it be in a Suitcase built, but no light at the bottom, took it with me because I just found the lenses interesting anyway, the light shined from above and looked here how it worked, like your idea with an lcd screen, thank you for your video

hi Jan. coincidentally i found this video where you made this overhead mod. now i made the beginning of the RooBee DLP 3d-printer from instructables. and i wondered if i can build that and leave the (acer) DLP projector away due cost perspective, and put a monitor under the build platform with one or multiple UV led's or lamps under it.perhaps switched or with a shutter or so. then we also should get rid of the UV filter layer in the monitor, (not the polarisation film's) but if this works with a cheap monitor afterall, maybe then we could use an screen with a bit higher resolution to sacrifice. the pros off this is that if it works we got a much bigger build volume then the common Anycubic Photon and all the other comparible DLP 3D-printers. those are also using a simple screen in fact, but way to small in my eyes. perhaps i am goeing to try and strip an old lcd screen with a red stripe true the screen (hopefully the bad stripe does not interfere to much just using the monitor in Black and white as a Gobo, but just for testing puposes who cares) like so and put a UV tanning light under it and see if some Daylight resin will cure. (knowing that the resolution of the crappy monitor is way to low for serious usage) what do you think about this?

Are you talking about putting a computer monitor on the overhead projector surface minus the light diffusing plastic sheets & plexiglass? I wonder if that would work.🤔

I think the next stage should be is to get rid of that power hungry halogen lamp and replace it with a 50 watt LED. Better light, probably no fan required and most of the heat gone. In fact the box will be almost empty so you could put the power supply and driver board inside, perfect solution. You could probably use the original optical system with little modification.

That's a good idea. I was actually already looking around the web for suitable replacement lamps. LEDs are definitely an option. I found some that have nearly the same size and contacts so maybe I can even keep the fancy changing mechanism inside the projector and just fiddle around with the electronics a bit to make it work. I hope I find the time to try that soon.

Jan Beta Hey Jan I was just wondering, have you found a 50w led avaliable in Europe yet? I'm doing the exact same thing as you.

ha ha I been working on a handmade overhead for my live visual performances like this but with extra bells and whistles!! glad to see I'm not the only one messing with older tech crossing with new parts! I agree with Beeny, but I would also add a mask to baffle the spill light and tape the light leaks if your making improvements, maybe a temapture adjustable 3000lumen WHITE or RGB LED they make ones that get really bright and add an iris to the bulb to control brightness! Once my prototype is done I'll link a video to yah.

+William FitzGerald Haha, nice! Yeah, there is so much to optimize and endless possibilities to tinker with this. I didn't find the time yet (too many distractions and other projects) but maybe there's gonna be a follow up to this one, too. Really looking forward to seeing your video (and maybe steal some ideas ;)).

Hi William. Did you end up getting the projector to work with an LED as a light source?
@MythosFilmsYT
@MythosFilmsYT 3 года назад
Might be a dumb question, but would something like this work by just putting on a movie on your phone and laying it on the projector?
@maxlegend1374
@maxlegend1374 3 года назад
No it will not the object you put on the overheads surface has to be transparent or translucent I think
@MrRusty-fm4gb
@MrRusty-fm4gb Год назад
If you do that, all you would get on the wall is a large black rectangle with slightly rounded corners. There is a few other RU-vid videos of people carefully taking out some of the layers of their phone screen and keeping separated from the rest of the phone but still connected, and then using a projector lens and another lens that makes the images parallel, I think. They use special color LEDs that are kind of expensive. But I don’t see a problem with just placing the phone screen on an overhead projector and then covering the rest of the surface so only the image on the phone screen shows up and not the empty space on the rest of the projector surface.

You might be able to find conversion kits for some of these projectors. Hacking in a random high luminance LED bulb might also work.
