You can create a stitch line more easily when you select your path at the bottom and you to edit-> path -> offset path. Fill in -4 mm as a value and hit enter. This will offset your line 4mm inwards and the rounded corners will also be perfectly scaled in proportion. Give it a try, it will make your workflow quicker and easier. Cheers. Love your videos by the way! Great work
That is one of the first things I notched in the video. Also noticed there are so many ways to do the same task. I appreciate the different perspectives and tool usage. Always get to learn something.
For stich lines I recommend selecting the outline *Object -> Path -> Offset Path* then with the direct select tool remove certain edges and bring down the corners.
Can you try made this pattern on iPad ? Because I have problem with rounding buttom corners. When I select them and tap 10 mm in transform section, all the time it’s change on 3.532. Why ???
Cool vid, should use offset path for your stitch line. Set to -4 or -5 then use the [C]ut tool to remove the top line. Does all the radius and alignment change for you 👍
I have watched several youtube videos on pattern making for wallets and your tutorial is absolutely easy to comprehend and easy to replicate on adobe illustrator!! Ty!
This is the video that started it all for me. Thank you! I made this out of some random white pleather I had sitting around and red canvas for inlay. Used regular red fabric thread and just freestyled it. It came out so good that I bought some leather and basic tools. Going to make it for real this time. Your channel is top tier I am learning lots. 🙏
Would you consider one more video showing the laser cut out process. Many people would be interested in your laser settings and the min and max of the thickness of leather.
Great video mate, I've always wanted to try some leatherwork and you are a big inspiration to start that. Quick tip as someone who uses Illustrator everyday, you can speed up your stitch hole path creation by selecting your original outer shape then head up to the 'Object > Path > Offset Path' menu and set the offset to -4mm, hit OK and you're good to go! It'll create that new path for you, the inner radius of your corners will look natural and it will automatically align it perfectly in position. You can then just direct select and remove any parts of the original path you don't need stitch holes for too.
Great tutorial. Just a tip: when you do stitches, you can try the next menu comand: Object -> Path -> Offset Path and enter a negative value "-4mm". It works great even with complicated designs and saves you some time.
I was going to mention that. Also...he should leave the stroke between the stitch marks, and keep them at 1mm. The reason is if he engraves it, and burns the dashes through...he'll have an inset to lay his stitching into.
Not conna lie. exactly a video i needed right now. Been doing leatherwork for a while. and was just planing to learn how to do this stuff. This video is a perfect starting point. cheers mate for that :)
My favorite tutorial of the year.... I have a laser machine looking to do this and just like that i learned a ton of information. Keep up the good work. Excellent explanation and great cinematography elements in the video.
Hey - I was thinking, why not use Object->Path->Offset to create the stitchline? works well for me, and is easier with more complex forms. Also, I have made a habit of not “subtracting” any holes from shapes, instead I just group them together. It makes later modifications easier, and the laser will just cut where the lines are either way.
Hey, nice video. There is an easier way to create a stitch line out of your shape. Copy your shape, offset path (-4mm in your case), and only THEN delete extra part. Then you might need little adjustments, sometimes you don`t need even them :)
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! Couple of questions though. 1. Do you usually add trim allowance to your projects? I'm afraid I couldn't line up two pieces covered in glue perfectly from the first try (don't laugh). 2. What's the basic approach to do the measurement? I mean if a business card has size X*Y mm, if I'll create a pocket of the same size between stitching lines it probably wouldn't fit at the end (because of the card thickness, leather thickness issues). What's the general rule of thumb here? What amount of "ease" should one add to the original size of the object? Thanks for the time reading and probably answering!
Same here - loved the tutorial - informative, but guidance towards measurements to keep leather and cards thickness in mind would be terribly useful :)
I have seen a video where he talks about it. We do on our internal stuff. Makes things easier. But when using a laser cutter all edges and corners are perfect. pretty easy to line up, sand and burnish.
This is a great informative video. I grouped tips from yours and another leather template video and I found you did certain things alot easier. Can't wait to make something and cut it with my laser.
Appreciate the advice! Also saw a fuji camera on the desk. I just got a X-T3 for photo work and it's been great for product photos. Always get stoked when I see another fuji shooter.
Quick tip, you can move the zero point of the rulers by dragging the top left corner where the 2 rulers meet to wherever you like! that sets the new 0 ;) everything left to it or above it will be registered as minus
Wow. I have been trying to do this in Publisher and it is sooooo hard and not the right software, just what I had. Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to get this software and try skillshare.
Little tips for Illustrator. 1- When you have the rectangle tool selected, just click on or off the artboard then a window will pop up for you to input your desired dimensions! 2- When both shapes are selected for an alignment, click on the shape you want the other shape to be aligned to. This shape will stay where you want it to be while the other will get aligned! 3- The shape builder tool lets you substract an area by holding alt/opt and dragging your cursor through the shapes. Without alt/opt, it will combine them! 4- With a shape selected, hold ctrl/command to grab and move said shape by an anchor (vertices) to have a more precise positioning
@@LittleKingGoodsanother one that will save you a ton of time: Select your shape and use Object-> Offset Path and enter -4mm in the popup. Stitch line done.
Thank you for this video. I need to understand one thing. Sometimes watching your videos i see you trim the edges even if you used the die to cut the leather. So if you design in illustrator something you have to consider the die cutting line and the one you trim. And after that the line where you will make the holes for stitching. What distances you use for all these lines?
Thank you very much for your video! it was really helpful for me, i´m just starting to learn and make my own leather patterns. greetings from Lima - Peru.
Thanks a lot. Few days ago I searching video like this about stitch line and how to create it. but I create shape as circle1mm and line from center of circle for 4mm. Then I create brush style and apply to rectangles. But your way is more simple.
Good lob, 👍. Illustrator is great. I use to struggle with it and really hate it. But I hung in there and now we're good freind . I will suggest this video to my glowforge group for people who are still struggling with the program. I hate to show my file because people will always comment, "can I get a copy of your file". They can watch a video like this and within a week they will know enough to do most glowforge projects.
One thing I just learned working with my glowforge and illustrator is that if you don't DESELECT the "Responsive" box under "more options" when you save the SVG file, this can remove the absolute sizing done in illustrator and scale it to something random (for me it was ~75% of the designed size) when you load it into the glowforge. So make sure to turn this off!
Thanks for the video, you did a great job at teaching your technique. You mentioned your die maker a few times. Do you have a Canadian Die maker you use?
hey man I love your work, was just wondering what is the thickness of the leather that you usually use for your wallets. Anyways keep up the good work!
Many thanks for this and so much other content. I have a question about cutting this pattern out on the Glowforge, which I am considering buying. Do you have to make any adjustments for the kerf, or is it "just working" ? Also, with the Glowforge, are you getting charring, and if so, how bad is it and how to you clean it off?
Good morning , Your my leather goods mentor by the way sorry your stuck with me ..lol All jokes aside your work is phenomenal! Quick question what size thread do you use when making your Tote Bag vs a Watch band? I like the Japanese Vinymo Thread but unsure what size I should order. Thanks
You could just mark them out on the piece when you're working on them with steel calipers and then use the pricking irons how you would normally. Atleast that is how I would do it
Hello Ryan, Thanks for the very informative video tutorial. I tried to follow along but I think my version of Illustrator may be too old. What version of Illustrator are you using? Thanks Joe
Thanks for sharing. One question that I have is on the bigger patterns. How do you usually split them between pages? What I mean is your own way of splitting a pattern into different Letter or A4 pages.
I think that he should make the Arthur Morgan diary one day, or his handbag (don't know the name). He was a excelent character and the leather in his personal stuff would look awesome in real life since no one has made them
Hi. If I want to make some pattern bigger then A4 how can I make it to print for example on two A4 (to put togheter 2 A4 for make one piece). Can you make a tutorial for this? Thank you and sorry for my English
