DIY Welded Stud Using Stick Welder - Weekend Welding Warrior

This shows how I created a screw stud in a metal plate using only simple tools and a stick welder. (See warning / disclaimer below.)
Tools: 2 drill bits, C clamp, stick welder, hold down plate, angle grinder.
MATERIALS:
- bolt,
- 3 nuts,
- metal plate (to weld to)
- "jig" hold down plate to hold stud in place when welding

Nice work. I need to install four 3/8" studs on a metal plate today. I was going to try to weld the studs on directly, without drilling a hole first. I'm not proficient at welding (wire welder) and after seeing your video, will use your method instead.

Thanks. I ain't the best welder and was going to try to stick weld the stud on there originally by going around the bolt, but KNEW that would never work. Then this drilling the plate thing hit me.

Instead of drilling the slightly larger hole to get a 'groove', could you get away with just recessing the bolt in from the surface a little when you weld?

You could, but then you'd have to fill the hole with welding rod or leave the dimple.

Thanks. Why did you drill just halfway through? Not sure I you accomplished the welding part.

robviolin1 Good question; you could drill 90% of the way through, use a bigger "big" bit and get more weld area. That smaller part of the hole is to keep the stud centered, so it does not take much. With this 6mm plate I got a bit more than 3mm of weld 360 degrees around the bolt, and again could get say 5mm if I drilled deeper. At amatuer level uses it's not likely to pull through and not sure if it would peel off any more easily than one from a stud welder. This technique has some advantages, like it does not leave a weld bead around the bottom of the bolt, you can run the nut, brackets, washers or whatever right up against the plate. No ultra-precision cleanup grinding needed. It also can be done with any kind of welder: stick, TIG, MIG... And it's easy to check the weld. It should NOT be used where failure could result in massive failures, injury or death, but for things like furniture and such it has served me well.

I sheared off two bolts on my truck and needed to weld a plate that had two bolts on it. I took some pictures that shows what you describe. I'll link them below. It might clarify what you are describing in your video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_AGytGyaaFQ.html

I was installing new running boards on my Nissan Xterra and over torqued the nuts resulting in shearing off the bolts. I needed a solution to fix my problem. I liked your video and I enjoy armature welding so I decided to fabricate a bolt plate. The metal plate is 3mm thick x 65mm long and 24mm wide. The bolts I used where M8 - 1.25 x 25mm. I found everything I needed at Home Depot.
