Today we put the well rig to work on my daughter and SIL's 400' well. Their pump failed a few days ago and like everyone, stock at the local farm store is running low. After a local search we were able to come up with all the parts necessary to make the repair. Check valve, bushing reducer, water proof connectors, monster tape, control panel and a replacement pressure switch complete the list.
The Missus and the daughter get the opportunity to add their candid input during the long video. But the length was kinda necessary to get all the pertinent components of the process recorded for guys that may want to do this for themselves. Now I'm sure not suggesting this is the best thing for anyone to do, but if you dislike taking the chance of being bent over the barrel by an unscrupulous or fly by night repair crew....use this as a start for you to design your own homemade rig. We have pulled so many wells now I can't begin to remember them all. But its all for friends and family so I can't be accused of being that unscrupulous guy I mentioned above. They ARE out there even though you don't want to believe it...in ALL types of service oriented businesses.
The most important component to add to your purchase will be finding an old pump jack. That will be your insurance policy for minimizing the chances of dropping the well pump and pipe to the bottom. If that happens, your best choice is to get a 4'' grapple and nylon rope and do your best to get it caught up in the now balled up wiring that'll be somewhere down the drilling. Then a gentle and steady controlled pull MAY get your pipe back to the top to salvage the project. If not....its time to call the pro's. They will probably do the same thing, but its gonna cost ya !!
With this setup one guy CAN pull a well alone, but it's going to take a while. You can see all the steps everyone in the video takes to get this job done. By yourself, YOU take all those steps. Now a shallow well...?? No problem, I'd do it in a heart beat....but not on a 400 footer.
I can't apologize for such a long video, because it is what it is and besides....we can't have all this much fun without wanting to share it with a few of you guys too !!

Nice job even with the harassment by the Missus!!! Nice job by the Ladies showing some different angles. Wells on our farm are all dug by hand. Main well is 10' in diameter and 6' deep (spring fed). Two other wells (used in emergencies) are about 3' - 4' in diameter and about 20' deep. All the wells are brick lined. We've never had the wells go dry, been close a few times though. 👍👍👍

We had hand dug cisterns on the farm to catch rain water off the roof and they were as you described, but we didn't have any wells as such. I was lucky to have the extra help that could fiddle with the camera. But I HAD to get up from time to time to get some blood back in my lower legs !!

Debbie and I have endured a bit of pump problems over decades. and we have learned a couple of things. Not trying to copy or out do you. However tomorrow We will do a quick video showing a couple of things that work for us.The real Gem in your video. Aw heck man, it ain't a big thing at all !! I just film whatever it is I'm doing if I think its worthwhile to show then upload it. I don't really plan anything to any degree.... So as far as I'm concerned it's your thing, so like we said back in the '60's "Do what ya wanna do"...LOL. I'm finding that there are so many people out there that really don't do the variety of stuff that country boys like us do, and as a result they kinda like seeing just what the mystery is behind the doors we open sometimes. I've already seen that one you are talking about and dang if I didn't learn something myself about that fancy controller that guy invented. Still baffles me a bit.

Great work Wendell. Having the equipment and the family helping makes all the difference. I think I would have to add about 4 feet more tower to the rig so I could pull the pipe high enough to do the work standing or at least in a chair. My knees won't let me kneel that long anymore. We are on city water here in the suburbs of Kalamazoo. Still have a septic tank but I imagine we will have a sewer put through in the next 10 years or so. That is the trend to prevent climate change I think. At least that is the reason they give anymore. We had the 75 foot deep well pulled at the old house. The driller pulled it with his drill rig and replaced the pump. It had been in the ground about 10 years and we got hit by lightning. I'm impressed with the rig and your willing helpers. I do most things on my own with painting help from Lydia. Ryan helps with the heavy lifting.

Wendell, you amaze me with all the diverse skills you possess but I realize that you either learn to do the things yourself or pay out the wazoo to someone who just acts like he knows how to do the job. Loved the full-watch and tell your daughter that she narrated just fine while you and your SIL tended to the well works. Man, 400 feet of well is good and deep. Great teamwork. Wendell, I'd give my arm to be able to hang around you for a year or so to learn so many interesting skills you possess. Of course, your wife would run me off after a while b/c having two Marines hanging around would be too much to handle. That's why we had SNCO's keeping us busy all the time. B/C Marines with too much time on their hands could lead to almost anything (I'll just say, there'd never be a dull moment😁). Loved the vid. In fact, all your vids. Always great content. A 44 action video for this JOman! For some reason the 44 adventure notifications were not happening here inna my Holler! Now I have lots of catching up to do! Now this episode involved the Ladies, which does make things even more exciting so Kind Thanks to the Missus Baroness and Baronette! This rig is always appreciated for the NASA type engineering that went into its creation,,,,,eat your hearts out rocket scientists! Anyway, I’ve been busy with projects here and in me shop. I’ve been cleaning out drawers on one of my workbenches and found thing known and unknown to mankind! Now where is that favorite file of mine? Well in my file drawer, which was filled with wood shavings, filings and all that unknown stufff there must have been a peck of files! Oh, there it is, along with corn cobs and wine corks used for file handles, stainless steel clamps, screws,hack saw blades, nails and screws, angle brackets, mending plates, pieces of sheet steel, scraper blades, a few springs and a clock main spring used when spring steel is needed! THERE IT IS! Now, where do I put all this stuff so nicely packed in protective saw dust and shavings? The scary part is I have another drawer to go through! Perhaps I shall check into the aid of an archaeologist to go through the layers of this time capsule. Who knows what may lerk in the depths and layers? It’s spooky in some respects. Where did I get all this caca, as useful as it may be? But then again, it’s like opening your Christmas sock by the hearth side or may be like digging by TMI, remembering that near melt down. I think I may use a strainer to sift out the good stuff that may exist within the fossilized content of time. This reminds me of that first drawer experience when a soft spot in the corner of the drawer produced an old cotton sweat sock. No, I don’t store socks in my shop drawers but use worn out ones to polish and for rags. Ahhhhh! Those mysteries of life keep us going,,,,,,I recon! Anyway, why no tutu for the pump episode? If you and your son in law were wearing tutus it may well have created a viral vid! Of course you don’t want to go the way of Bud Light I recon either. Most likely dancing, gardening or edge trimming would be more of a tutu appropriate scene or the best, tractor Joy riding. Well I’d best get started catching up as time flies like an arrow and fruit flies like a banana, as stated before. Like one frog said to the other, I only have flies for you. That’s hear say since I didn’t hear it meself. So a few more 44 adventure vids and then I’ll possibly consider another drawer happening or may be not. If I had a large fire cracker place in the said drawer, might this be a good Fourth of July celebratory fun time? Anyway, a VERY HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY and I’ll be toasting your way very heavily as usual,,,,,or the JO just doesn’t have that heavenly kick it should! Now off to another exciting 44 adventure vid but perhaps just one more. Too much excitement just ain’t as good as it used to be,,,,well may be it is! DaveyJO rocketing off into his space cadet environment! Squeezez Pleezez of course!

I wondered if you might be experiencing 'puter problems or internet issues of some kind. I am sure glad to see its not a health issue that was holding you at bay !! This was a good day, but it'd been much worse if we had to pay full retail for the repair...whew !! Yeah that'd be a chunk of change for sure. Now I think ALL of us have a junk drawer that's really full of goodies...but when I look around I think I have a full size junk SHED !! LOL. It'd take me a week to just figure out how to start sifting it all through the sifter. Yeah, we have had the tutu's shelved for quite a while and I'm guessing it probably ought to stay there for a while....my loafers are still heavy enough to keep me grounded...LOL.Take care and don't work too hard in all this heat. Have a GREAT 4th along with Miss Alice....

A Bowling Ball! Haha I was wondering what that was! Great videography and commentary on this particular vid👍 I don’t want to tell you nothing cause I believe you’ve been there n done that. If you’ll follow along though I’ve got something to add. That pvc is most likely at the end of its life. A channel called h2o mechanic has taught me that. Black roll pipe is highly recommended as a replacement. I’ve learnt a lot recently from his vids as I’ve been going through my own well whose. Unfortunately it’s not the capacitor like you mentioned but much more serious. A collapsed bore hole.. pulled my pump twice now on black roll with good results eventhough it was more than a 3000lbs pull. Nice rig you’ve got there! I used my old jeep to pull mine out by my self but like I mentioned that’s one of the advantages of black roll. Gotta figure out how to remove the rock that tipped into the bore hole and put a sleeve in. Again your a triangle on top of a triangle of your community! Haha hey I love watching ya! Keep up the good work 💪

@tractorman4461 Год назад
The rolled black pipe has been in use down here for a while now and yes, that is the best route to go. I agree. Hopefully that's a bridge I won't have to cross for a while though. LOL If yours is collapsed pretty close to the surface, they may be able to sink the rotary bit, clean it up then add length to your steel casing....?? I think that's what you were meaning by removing the rock. Boy, that's nice to be able to pull all in one piece with the jeep though. I'm a bit envious ... And thanks for the awesome addition to the thread my friend. I guess instead of being a 'right' triangle....obtuse would be a bit more descriptive. LOL.

Great job you and your family and I'm sure it's always bliss. But it does remind me of a guy that actually women have said the same thing and I've heard this way too many times. You actually do that for your family? It wasn't as involved as pulling well pumps. Or it might be more involved. But a family that works good together seems to be a rarity nowadays. Glad that you are one of the rare and unique. This is extremely interesting. The thousands of dollars that many well drilling companies charge to pull the complex you just did. You may not like doing that but I don't think you'd starve you can have your pick of what jobs to do. Just my opinion.

The residential wells down this way are usually 6 or 8'' steel casing for 60 or 80'. I've seen some new ones with schedule 80 pvc casing as well. Me and my 'crew' have pulled quite a number of wells of all depths in this area. But the majority are 300' to 400' plus. There are no shallow wells in this area unless its a rare artesian well. We do have two that I know of locally though. We have saved a number of friends and families a lot of money over the years with this rig.

They can go a lot deeper. I think on the cheap it's $2,000 to do something on the line to what you've done on this video. I don't recall exactly it seemed like some of the guys he drilled Wells they want twice that. 10000 to 20000 to drill a well is common. Of course it can be more. 8 to 12 in across with initial casing. Closer to 8 is more common. And of course how far you go down with it now depends on the total depth of the well. I know people probably about 45 minutes away from you that they've got Wells they dug by hand we're talking 50 to 150 ft. 35ft on the shallow end. The most common deep depth around there was probably about 80 ft. No submerged pumps there. Well I don't know near as many people that used to. No of them is more like it. Anyway I was wondering if you've noticed if my videos have been suggested because I put up at 71 Nova and it should have skyrocketed and it did nothing and for the last several days whatever I put up has done nothing. I expect summertime to have something to do with it. That was a good video you made.

Uh - if you were doing this for a living you would be $1500 to $2000 richer every four hours of work at 400' of well for installing a new pump. And that is on the cheap side around the Northwest. Great video!

Awesome job. You folks made quick work of it. One question though. When threading the PVC pipe for reinsertion, is it easy to cross thread as you have 21" of pipe above?
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 Год назад
No it threads in easily Chuck. But that's why you hear a slight 'bump' of the trigger either up a little or down a little. When it's just right, the 20 foot length of floppy pvc stays straight as an arrow and starts as easily as can be. The extruded pvc couplings are shaped with a deep angle on the ends too...almost like a miniature funnel of sorts.

That price would be for a shallow well around here. And they are few and far between. Most wells in this area are 300 to 500' and the installed price for a 1 hp submersible is close to double your cost. But if you have pvc and its not as deep as these, you can get by much more lighter duty. Power can be a reversible motor and a gear reduction box. Depending on the reduction and the end rpm you can adjust the diameter of the drum to increase or decrease the footage of lift if the reduction is too slow or too fast. But you can also power another winch like this one with the reduction box as well.

Tractorman, I am sorry to bother you and ask personal questions. In 1993 we bought a Heil AC unit and it has been a great one. My question is the Unit will come down to 75 degrees and just continue to keep running and never shut off. I also wanted to ask you what is a good unit comparable to the Heil from the 80s as far as quality? The AC guy recommended Rheem, and I also looked on line and saw Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, American Standard. What would you recommend thanks for your help.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 Год назад
Well, the Heil Quaker products are part of ICP Corporation parent company. Tempstar is the identical unit to the Heil Quaker unit. Whirlpool units sold by Sears were also manufactured by Heil Quaker for many years. That’s just in case you would like to maintain brand loyalty and stay with a product that you know has been good to you. But what I suggest to people, especially in a rural situation is to stay with whatever major brand is available locally. Simply because with the sophistication and continual changes to the electronics and mechanical components Most contractors cannot afford to carry all the parts required to fix every brand like it used to be back in the day. Personally, I do not feel that any of the equipment today it is expected to have the longevity of the older units, like yours, and also like my 1984 Tempstar. Also, there seems to be some issues with the newer R410a and systems developing leaks. 410 operates at an exceptionally high pressure as compared to the old R-22. And then some manufacturers have developed what they call a microchannel evaporator coil that also seems to be a little more problematic than the old tube type evaporator coil’s. The micro channel coils are extremely efficient in transferring temperature and if you get a good one, that does not have a problem you are golden. But if you have one that develops a leak, you’re in for a ride. Over the years, I’ve worked on virtually every manufacturer of residential and commercial HVAC equipment from the smallest central air conditioner to 300 tons commercially. I guess the best suggestion is to hang with a contractor that you may know and trust to lead you in the proper direction for what’s available in your area. Never go with the cheapest though and definitely never go with the most ridiculously expensive. The reason I said to go with a brand that is relatively close to you. If you are rural, it’s because you will stand the greatest chance of having a critical repair part in stock for the inevitable failure. I hope that help you make a decision that will be beneficial to you. By the way,R410 is an isotope, which means it is a blend of two different refrigerant. If you develop a leak on the suction side of the system, your system can ultimately become unbalanced and not cool properly because the different refrigerants will vaporize at different temperatures and the mixture will no longer be perfect. Speaking of refrigerant. One of two things is probably wrong with your system. Number one it could be suffering from weakening valves in the compressor, if it is a reciprocating compressor or number two it could merely just be a little bit low on refrigerant. Refrigerant 22 has to have enough refrigerant in the system to maintain a minimum of 57 psi on the suction line to keep the coil from freezing. Much below 57 psi and there’s not enough refrigerant in the system to produce enough cooling to allow it to freeze. So yours is cooling just not cooling well, but not freezing up. So it’s one of two of these things I just described, more than likely. Of course, like everything else on the Internet, you better take that with a grain of salt! 😄 good luck and thank you for trusting me enough to ask.

Yes, the newer, smart chargers will not work. They will only work on a battery that has a partial charge, and since there is nothing but the liquid solution there is no charge for it to read. So the answer is to get an older charger just like you suspected. remember though that it gives off hydrogen gas so don’t make any sparks when disconnecting. And definitely don’t do it inside a building.

Well now that's not good at all. Dang. If you have a good neighbor and have a shut off right inside the basement....can you connect the two houses through a garden hose and rob some of their water for the duration...? Hook to a hose bib outside and shut off the valve inside the house to keep from backfeeding to the leak. Home Depot or Lowes will have a female/female connector for that. I was thinking of doing this for the daughters but its 500 feet away. Instead they just carried water for the duration but showered up here.

@@tractorman4461 we shut the water off at both the meter and in the basement. The sump hole would fill from the ground being so wet and seeping in the drain so I’ve been using the shop vac to keep it emptied and bringing the water up and to the garden. Letting the sump operate it would just leak out outside and recycle. I have several huge jugs filled with water that my son brought me, and used the shower at my daughters. @@tractorman4461A backup plan is always a good idea. My son lives at 9400' in the Colorado mountains. He did a major remodel last winter. Installed a 250 gallon storage tank with a booster pump to supply the house. The well pump automatically fills the storage tank. I was concerned that if he lost his well pump in the middle of the winter, might play hell getting a rig up his steep driveway - not to mention the good chance of having to deal with multiple feet of snow. I piped it so that the well pump can supply the house directly if he looses the booster pump.
