Happy New Year, lovely souls x Here I am back with another DIY wire jewelry tutorial x
Today, I thought I would show you how to make a couple of different easy chain links, which are ideal for beginners. These simple chain links are so versatile and you can use them in all sorts of your jewellery projects.
The first is the 'figure of 8' or the infinity link. Perfect for all types of necklaces and bracelets. And the second: simple wire wrap loop links, both with and without beads.
Materials you'll need:
1mm copper wire (or wire of your choosing)
Ruler
Chain Nose Pliers x 2
6 Step Bail Making Pliers (or Round Nose Pliers)
Flush Cutters
Beads of your choosing (I've used 6/0 seed beads)
Suggested lengths of wire for your Figure of 8 links (to use as a guide - please feel free to experiment):
1mm wire - 2cm (3/4in) use first step on the bail pliers
1mm wire - 2.5cm (1in) use the second step on the bail pliers
1mm wire - 3cm (1 and one quarter in) use third step on bail pliers
For slightly thicker links:
1.25 mm wire - 3.5cm - use third step on the bail pliers
I really hope you find this tutorial useful. Have fun making these lovely and simple links for all your jewelry projects.
See you next time
Samantha x

These links are beautiful and useful, the perfect combination! This new year has had a rough start for many (Covid infection in my case but I'm OK). Let's work towards improvement through positive thinking and creation of beautiful things that give us a much needed respite from our worries both large and small.

Oh this is so lovely 🥰 and I totally agree. Being creative and making beautiful things with our hands is SO good for us and our mental wellbeing, isn’t it? I also had a covid infection a couple of months ago, and it was pretty awful, so I hope you’re doing well in your recovery. Thank you so much for your lovely comments 🥰

I am loving your approach to wire wrapping tutorials. I have only been wire wrapping for 5 months and I learned it all here on RU-vid. I NEED to have directions given that are nice and detailed at a slow space with good visuals to allow me to learn the techniques. Just like you are doing! I do see some of the same techniques over and over with a different spin or two from a few artists. I’ll get there but this style of teaching is so needed as we all aren’t advanced wire artists. I can take these core basics that you are showing us and easily learn them, then, I can put my own spin on them as I get better. I follow about seven wire wrapping artists but find I always go back to the one who is very detailed like you. I am happy to have found you! I can really learn from you I feel sure. I truly appreciate artists like you who take the time to teach, film edit etc for the rest of us. Speaking for myself, I have been so lifted up with this new journey of wire wrapping so just know that you are giving the world a gift❤

Thank you SO much for your very kind words. It’s very sweet of you. There are some extremely talented and experienced individuals here on RU-vid, aren’t there? And they are excellent at their craft. Whilst I don’t ever aspire to be as talented or as good as them, I did feel, as I was learning myself, that a slow and deliberate approach to demonstrating core techniques would be beneficial. So I’m so happy you found the video beneficial for you ❤️ I really just video and edit etc., as a hobby as it gives me focus and allows me to relax (I have Neurodiverse kids) but I’m discovering that it’s a beautiful thing to connect with like minds here on RU-vid. Happy wrapping! I’m sure you will gain peace and relaxation from it as much as I do ❣️

@@samanthalatimer1 I do! I’m an artistic person who likes to learn all kinds of things. I started in August just for fun. I am retired and 4 years ago we moved to the mountains of North Carolina. I’m always trying to learn something and artistic endeavors are such a great peaceful thing to do as well as challenge your tenacity to push through difficult things! I was fortunate enough to have sold over $300 dollars worth of wrapped pendant necklaces at Christmas, which got me thinking. I need to pay for my supplies so I am setting up my Etsy store to get it out there and possibly sell enough to do that as I want to continue to do this. I did learn metal smithing but found it to tedious and costly. This is in the wheel house and way more fun. I’m young at heart but just turned 69😍old dogs can and do learn new tricks if the tricks are easy enough to follow that’s where you come in!

@@15Montrano I love this! Old dogs definitely CAN learn new tricks!! And wow! Selling your work is amazing 🤩 I have an Etsy store, but had to suspend it when my daughter became quite ill, but as she is improving now, I may open it back up. You’re quite right that we need to pay for our supplies somehow! 🤩 Please do let me know how you progress… I’d love to know 😍

I love your tutorial on making links. I've bought some copper, but unsure of how to keep it from tarnishing. Do you have any advice on what I can use especially with ear wires. I don't want it to cause any irritations. My young cousins are wanting some copper earrings. Thanks. I also hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Gappy New Year. Ours was pretty quiet as well. Pretty much stayed home except for New Years Day. Had to go out for a few groceries and junk food for the hubby. I don't care for junk food myself, plus being diabetic it's just not a good idea.
@samanthalatimer1
@samanthalatimer1 5 месяцев назад
Thank you so much, Jeanetta 🥰 I’m glad you had a peaceful Christmas and New Year. There’s a few things you can do regarding tarnishing etc. The first, and easiest, is to make your ear wires (or alternatively, buy them) from sterling silver wire and have the mixed metal look. I love mixing metals and it prevents any issues with irritation (unless sensitive to silver, of course). This I what I’d do, in the first instance. For the main piece with earrings, and with chains, bracelets and pendants etc., you can seal copper with specific waxes or spray sealants, which do go along way in tarnish prevention. Beeswax, Renaissance Wax etc., are a good place to start. Hope you continue to have a very peaceful New Year. Thank you, as always, for your support 🥰
@jeanettatownsend6807

@samanthalatimer1 thank you so much for your advice and I agree about the mixed metals. I'm definitely going to do them that way. Again, thanks so much.
@nice2nettles

@@samanthalatimer1 I've been wondering about this too. I have some renaissance wax, but wasn't sure if it would be safe to use on the ear wires themselves. I have a tiny amount of sterling silver to use for ear wires, which I'll move on to once I'm confident with copper (it's so expensive!!). Thanks for the tutorial, and happy New Year :)
@samanthalatimer1
@samanthalatimer1 5 месяцев назад
I wouldn’t use it on the wires, myself. I do use silver and gold plated copper wire for ear wires for myself, as I know I can tolerate that, but for the pieces I sell, I use either niobium or sterling silver 🥰 But certainly, it’s fine for the main body of jewellery pieces if they’re not used within the ear. Happy New Year 🥳 and I hope it’s a creative and peaceful one for you 🥰
