I recently made this simple rustic white farmhouse headboard for some good friends. This is a great DIY project especially if you need a headboard and don’t want to spend a lot of money on one. DIGITAL PLANS - etsy.me/2IwjSbb

Hey friends! I hope you enjoy this one! I didn't clarify a lot with my mistake on the finish. I used a foam brush and put it on too thick. That was most of my problem. I would recommend Polycrylic instead of what I used. I'll link it below. What would you recommend using? Comment below to help others out.

My husband and I have been working on this project for a couple days. We don't have good tools so made do with what we have. We used some bead board for the central part and we shortened the overall height. Here are the things we struggled with. 1. The slats were not exactly the measure we wanted and required trimming. 2. The brads we had didn't hold things together so we switched to some U-shaped brads - better. 3. We had little gaps in several places but the trim covered that. 4. We were afraid of the French cleat but it worked out. 5. We had a really lame pocket hole jig that we fought with - need lots more practice. 6. Shortening ours kind of threw off the proportions and the overall look. We plan to use a watery white paint to get the washed look and then seal it. Yours came out a lot better than ours of course, but all in all, we like what we made and enjoyed doing the project together. Thanks for sharing it.

I downloaded his plans and made this last year... it turned out perfect. I used a dark oak stain, then diluted white paint and applied it to the desired look. super easy and fun. thnx for the plans.

Just watched a handful of your videos and subscribed, you've got a great presence on camera. Very easy to watch, keep us informed throughout the process, just good content overall. I hope to get into woodworking someday when I feel like I have more time to dedicate to learning a new hobby. For now I'll settle for watching people like yourself create things. Keep up the good work!

Good stuff bud!! I've always stained the first coat with a darker stain, let dry, then paint over it with white paint and sand lightly to weather the paint. Finished with a light coat of laquer and boom. Super quick and simple. Stinks that happened with that one coat stuff! I'll make note of that and never touch it! Haha!

Made by Mitch found this as I’m searching for ideas for my headboard and this is my fav as I want to add trim! Could this all be done with a hammer and nails if I don’t have a nail gun? Can nail guns be rented from Home Depot?
@MadebyMitch
@MadebyMitch 5 лет назад
Lauren. Yes you could do this with hammer and nails. It would be tough in my opinion but possible. Home Depot does rent air nailers and air compressors. Harbor Freight does have a Brad nailer air compressors that are cheap. I wouldn't recommend there stuff if you use it all the time because the quality isn't the greatest, however if you it is something you use on occasion it is worth it. Plus if it breaks they will replace it. I hope this helps. Good luck!

2 coats of shellac to seal in the pitch since pine was used then milk paint over top. BLO over top that. Just like they did farm house finishes before modern finishes.
@LisaBevill-ProSinger1
@LisaBevill-ProSinger1 4 года назад
Also, I researched polyurethanes amongst all the pros who use it over their painted furniture..and they all suggested Varathane Ultimate polyurethane satin finish ...and that’s all I use now on everything...you can even paint or glaze over the first coat if you make a mistake and then put several coats over that..I have to order it online from Home Depot..they don’t carry on the shelves in the store...I think it comes in a 2 quart set.
@MadebyMitch

I will definitely have to give this a try. Thank you for suggesting this Lisa. I appreciate it!

Dude, try a pin nailer for the smaller wood, I saw you split 2 pieces of wood trying to shoot an 18-gauge through it.
@inspired2speak

Hey Mitch, Your headboard turned out beautiful however I wanted to give you a tip on how to prevent bleed through or yellowing when you use white stain or paint. The polyurethane will always turn white yellow every time so to prevent that you can use kills blocker as a primer before you paint or Zinsser shellac as a primer & it will block out any stain or yellowing when using white paint. What’s even better is you can use oil or water based anything over it & get amazing results! if you’re using stain, instead of using poly urethane or poly acrylic use a wax and just wax the piece. I use wax from dixibelle or go to your local DIY store where they sell chalk paints or mineral paints & they always have wax available.
@MadebyMitch

Oh wow! This is such a great tip. Thank you so much for this! I really appreciate it. I am definitely going to try this the next time I use white.👍👍

Question: Did you use a 1x2 board that you ripped for the French cleat as described in the separate video? The headboard is heavy so I thought you may have used something bigger than that.

Hey Mitchell I used that one One Coat Polyurethane also on a quilt rack I built my grandma. It did the same thing but I was putting it over danish oil. I wasnt sure if it was me or the polyurethane.
@MadebyMitch
@MadebyMitch 5 лет назад
Hmm that's interesting. For mine I was assuming it was user error more so than product. I put it on a bit too thick. I typically use polycrylic. That is what I should have used.
@jonjones623

I might have put it on too thick also. I ended up sanding a lot of it off.

The nailing is weak. You should be using small brad nails/glue on the trim. That way you don't get horrible splits that make you look foolish in the video.
@Lt_Tim
@Lt_Tim 3 года назад
Watching you push the wood over the blade using your hands made me cringe. One slip and you could lose your whole hand. You should always use something like a pusher block to push the wood.
