DIY Wood Mosaic Wall Art

Add some color and style to your wall with this rustic decor. Personalize your own sign with the style and colors you like. This sign was easy to make and creates a stunning piece of wall art.
This sign measures 25 1/2” X 25 1/2”
NOTE: This sign ended up weighing 15 lbs so I would recommend modifying it in some way so that it is not so heavy. If you have suggestions as to how I could make it lighter please put a comment below.
Materials:
- 3/4” plywood - homedepot.sjv.io/PMQBe
- pine boards
- paint - homedepot.sjv.... AND homedepot.sjv....
- stain - amzn.to/2LA5iAn AND amzn.to/36g3nL6
- clear coat - amzn.to/2Xap6Qe ( I linked the clear coat I like best, not the wax I used in the video that didn't work well)
- wood glue - amzn.to/3cwqWRZ
- 1 1/2” brads - amzn.to/2y4Us2q
- parchment paper - amzn.to/35Y2E0G
- Hanging hardware - amzn.to/3677CbP
Tools:
- table saw (although if you buy your boards in the width you want you do not need this)
- miter saw or miter box
- clamps
- sandpaper

The inner pattern is 3 1/4 inches, next row is 3 1/4 inches, and the smaller 3rd row is 1 1/2 inches.

I make mine with 1/4" plywood for the base and I resaw 3/4" pine to 3/8"...makes a big difference in weight and yet still durable.

I make a lot of these and sell them. I use 1/8 Luan board and it definitely helps with the weight. Nice work

To lighten up my work I use 1/4 inch backing and make it 1/4 to 1/2 inch bigger than my peace then groove the frame to slide over the ends to help prevent cupping. Great video really nice work.

I use scrap wood I find, I take 2 x 4's and strip to 1/4 ", sometimes the 1 1/2 strip and some the 3 1/2 using my table saw. I made a 45 degree slide jig for my table saw for cutting all the angles, works great. I usually use 1/4 ply for the backing. It makes it much light. I like the colors you choose. I've done the pattern you did and like it. But I give alot of they away.

I am just getting going in wood projects as a hobby and have a small space to try and use as a work shop… It seems as though you are able to make some impressive projects in a smaller work shop set up ! Make them with 2x4s rip the 2x4s 1/4 " strips and use 1/2 inch thick plywood for back or even 3/8" thick backing that should lighten it up quite a bit make sure to buy spruce 2x4s much lighter to work with... This is also much better cost wise... Let me know if you tried it out...

I've been building a table and I've been reaaaaaally putting off the top of it because I just didn't know what I wanted to do, but watching this I think I can commit to what I originally planned. Geometric design sort of like in the saa, but I'm going to replace some of the blocks with images so ;I have a large format printer and I can print photos and then I can put them in clear acrylic I think and basically just use the table itself as the walls to let that dry

I thinks that’s a great design that lends itself to all kinds of variety in wood grain, color choices and wood types. I wonder how it would work as a coffee table? Nice job!

I would suggest French cleats on the studs in the wall. Weight shouldn't be a problem... One long one, 6" shorter than the peice, 3" on each side, and 2" x 3"peices directly below ends to maintain space behind the peice. It is possible to widen the border 3/4" and let cover the sidesand you don't see the space behind the peice.

Thanks for the support Barbara, so nice to meet another woodworker. Awe, my Lily, she is actually a Vizsla but gets confused as a Redbone Coonhound a lot. The only way to tell is Vizsla’s have red noses and coonhounds have black 😊

I’m late to the show but you can combat the weight of these types of wall hangings by using a French Cleat to mount it. It’s super easy and distributes the weight evenly.

You did a good job. With that much weight maybe you could try a French cleat. That size would fit 2 wall studs 16 inch on center, on the inside wall of your house. If you had added this from the start, you could have glue and screwed thru the back before installing the art part. It looks like the plywood and wood are both 3/4 inch thick, giving you 1 1/2 inches to work with. Should work with screws from the back, don't forget the glue. I have found that past mistakes are the best lessons learned for future projects.

I use cedar fencing its light can be left rough or planed down to thinner stock.

You may want to try basa wood. You just need a knife to cut those and they are super thin so nice and light weight.

Try using 1/4" plywood or even 1/8" will reduce your weight significantly!

Looks good! Using wood that is thinner would cut down on the weight. Half the thickness? would be half the weight. Or twice the size at the same half-thickness would be the same 15 pounds. Using 1/4 inch plywood or luan or underlayment wouldnt work great since you would see the sides of it anyway. But, all that defeats the purpose of putting scrap wood to good use.

dont use plywood as the backer board, use 1/8 or 1/4 inch wood, cut your slices to 1/8 to 1/2 inch, whatever is workable for you. then you are at 1/2 inch total thickness to 3/4 inch for the whole thing. Use a 1/4 inch rail in the back like cabinets do drilled directly into the studs. Cut the bottom side at a 45 degree (the one that attaches to the quilt wood art) with the receiving board on the wall drilled at the same angle and extend the frame behind the picture that extra 1/4 inch to hide this attachment and no worries about stability issues.

Dblood85 me too 🤣. I think that each area changes a bit as you put the boards in place. So if I’m off just a bit on the inside it creates a bigger difference on the edges. Honestly I’m not sure. I’ll try a few more and then hopefully have a better answer for you.

I believe I used chalk paint for this project but I’d suggest using a semigloss paint from the hardware store. Sometimes I buy the sample sizes since I don’t need much.

Hi Rhea. You could totally do this with a handsaw. I’d suggest getting a miter box to make your cuts more accurate. It will take a lot of time but totally doable 😀

Thank you. I honestly have no idea how much these would sell for. A lot of the wood wall art signs sell for about $100-$300 on Etsy depending on the details and hours it takes to make them. If you're looking to buy check Etsy, if you are wanting to sell them I would suggest looking into local Farmers Markets.

Sadly I forgot to write down the color and do t have it any more. I went to the hardware store, found a teal I liked, and bought a small sample size of it which is plenty for one of these signs. I’ll make sure to keep the paint names next time, so sorry.
