BG291 - My build of the diyAudio Korg NuTube Preamp kit designed by Nelson Pass. Fun little DIY build project I did over Thanksgiving 2020. This was a fun build and actually sounds really good. For a modern day low voltage vacuum tube, I'm impressed. Hope you enjoy.

It is refreshing to see someone else teaching others how to install components leaving an air gap between the board and component. My grandfather, Dad and Uncle all had electronics backgrounds and instilled in me how important it is to have air flow around components, I have been doing this ever since.

Just finished the build and calibration - as you say a pretty straight forward project but fun. Have now attached to my Quad 405-2 and some no name speakers and am pretty happy with is output. Has good clarity , great midrange - Bass is pretty good for me ( too much 70" s rock) not overemphasized. Great construction notes and good testing advice - almost ideal notes . Thanks Mark for alerting me of this . No microphonics !

Great build Mark! One tweak you might try is bypassing the electrolytic coupling caps with some 1uF Panasonic polypropylene caps mounted under the board. One thing I like about the NuTube is the 30,000 hour lifespan. I can fall asleep with the unit playing, and I don't feel guilty about wasting the precious life of a valuable NOS tube.

Thanks for this vid, Mark. Because this preamp was designed by the legendary Nelson Pass, it makes me especially curious about it. I keep meaning to order one. It also just looks like a fun project. @@metalbill I just did some research on these "tubes". They are made by Noritake. Same people who probably made the VFD clock display on your microwave or old VCR. They modeled this tube based on a VFD, and probably because they had the tooling as well! I suspect these are just a gimmick item and won't be around very long. The audio specs are no better, actually worse than a good vintage tube, discrete transistor, or OPAMP design.

@@andydelle4509 An advantage of this tube is the low voltage needed. If I remember correctly, it’s rated for 50,000 hours of use. That’s why it’s soldered in. You’re not going to see anywhere close to 50,000 hours out of a typical socketed tube.

Great video, Mark. I've been skeptical of these because of the very low gain. I think I read somewhere you need about 10x of them to get the same gain as a 12AX7 stage. Just seems almost pointless. I hope it works out though.
@stiles3711
@stiles3711 3 года назад
It's a buffer not a gain stage. It is an impedance matching stage with a passive volume control. So if your source will drive your amp to full power but a passive volume control will create a impedance mismatch a buffer stage is useful. Nelson Pass did the B1 buffer quite some time ago and this is the updated one with a Korg NuTube in the sameish circuit if I remember correctly.

@andydelle4509
@andydelle4509 3 года назад
Depends on the preamp output impedance. Should be OK just based a quick look at the schematic. So an RCA Y cable or adapter would be fine. But you do realize what you propose is not true bi-amping? True bi-amping requires a line level symmetrical crossover to send the highs to one amp and the lows to the bass amp. Common crossover frequency is around 2khz. I guess you could use two integrated amps with tone controls to mimic a crossover but it would not be ideal.

When it’s a Nelson Pass design is famous for making transistor sound like tubes that nice soft analog sound. I purchased and built the Pete Millet version of this NuTube. I have built other Nelson Pass design amplifiers and preamps. One thing for sure you can never go wrong building a Nelson Pass design. The help you get from Do It Yourself Audio (DYIAUDIO.com) from other members for newbies building their first project is incredible. Sometimes the price point is a little too high for some people the majority the cost comes from purchasing the fancy aluminum chassis. If you’re on a budget you could get a eBay or electronics project case for a couple dollars to keep your costs down.

@@qddk9545 The same probably think they need a certain color of cap for that Mojo TONE also. It is quite laughable really. There are many things of this sort in audio, they are snake oil. That transient soon reverses, faster than hell, your ear, brain, does not care or is precise enough to detect it is inverted. Now inverting a signal to say your sub channel, playing the same media into it as your mids, highs, you WILL notice the change. This will definitely depend on your transducers construction indeed, need equal travel excursion from rest both directions, which is how most are made, or should be. Try it.

Nice kit and nice build. Only think I do not like is using that kind of solid core twisted pair for unbalanced high impedance audio. It won't give same kind of shielding as proper coaxial cable would, and even worse input has two channels twisted together, not ground and signal which will defeat whole point of twisted cable. This seems to be common problem with many "high fidelity" diy builds, I don't know if this comes from just ignorance and using wires stripped from old ethernet cables, or if builders have seen twisted signal lines used in proper professional balanced setups and have just tried to copy that look.
@j.w.8663
@j.w.8663 3 года назад

@andydelle4509
@andydelle4509 3 года назад
I agree shielded wire is preferred and what I used on my last DIY tube preamp build. But realistically modern line level components, like CD players, are not high impedance. As the output stages are typically OPAMP based, they sit around 100 ohms sometimes with a build out resistor of less than 1000 ohms. Yes the input impedance is still around 10-50K ohms but once connected to a lower impedance output, that lower impedance dominates. Keeping this in mind, I doubt you will incur and additional audible noise or crosstalk with the twisted pairs shown here. And on true high impedance circuits, shielded wire also has another significant disadvantage - capacitance.

I also thought about cross talk between left and right channel, when I saw the very neat wiring. I suppose it would be better not to strip the wires from each channel tight together. How can anything sound really good with a phone driving it? The 500 mv output is much to low and the DACs are pathetic in a phones. If you think it sounds good now, buy a $100 DAC (M.S.M.L) and feed the DAC a digital signal via USB from your phone. The DAC will have a 2V output and MUCH cleaner and sweeter sound. A phone can't possibly do your preamp justice. Sound quality can only be as good as the weakest link. @@jjcale2288 2 volts is a normal output for source devices, like CD, DAC.....
