Hinton reports that the school opened in 1870 in New Orleans, moved to Baker in 1923, and closed in 1960. He visits the ruins of the school in Baker and interviews Dorothea Carter and Ollie Chase, two Leland alumnae, who discuss their memories and experiences at Leland College. Hinton also interviews Reverend Lionel Lee, who discusses his research into the history of Leland College, including the lack of financial support that led to the closure of the school.

Hinton interviews Alvin Batiste, the director of the Southern University Jazz Institute, who discusses the unique opportunity of having a composer interpret his own work and the impact of Gillespie on jazz. Hinton also interviews Dizzy Gillespie, who discusses his interest in young musicians and his view of contemporary jazz.
