Streaming took over radio. Most people like curated playlists. They don’t want to spend time to discover new artists, and create their own playlists. It’s far easier for them to just select a curated playlist and hit play. So if an artist is put on a playlist that is listened to by millions of people everyday, their streams will go through the roof. Especially if they are put near the beginning of the playlist. If they are left off the playlist, then millions of people will never listen to their music.

They’re not a neutral platform tho, they are a publisher. Platforms are protected under law because platforms are neutral and don’t fuck with what users see. Publishers ARE NOT protected because they edit what users get to see. Use your heads people. Twitter is just an example, Facebook already got caught doing this to their trending. Any companies that do this should not get protection under the law. The answer is yes you can sue. Or report to a competition authority. Maybe in the US where there is little regulation that stuff might fly but not in Europe. If you own a platform but that platform is the only way thousands can sell their work, then you have to abide by fair business practice rules. It doesn’t make sense to only sell Laya chips when selling others brings more choice and more buyers. The only way you would enter into an exclusivity deal like that is if you were being paid to only sell lays chips and that’s illegal.
