He was black man, and he was gay. If there is anyone who has faced inequality it would be him. Guess what? He never mentioned it at all growing up. Not once, he always talked about how good life was. None of his brothers or family was incarcerated, they all own homes, which he purchased in the 80's. Even though my best friend Maurice was raised in a good home, all the newest game systems, fridge full of food and newest clothes. Maurice never needed anything, as a matter of fact he was looked at as the rich kid on the block. Everyone even addressed his father as Mr or sir. They didn't do that for anyone else's parents on the block. Yet Maurice chose the gang life. Not by necessity. He chose the bullshit. He took his allowance to buy weed. He tried everything to get his son out of the system but he always chose the streets. I on the other hand worked from the age of 14. I came from the streets and I knew that shit wasn't for me. As soon as I started working it started a snowball of "I need to get the fuck out". I joined the Army and never struggled again. It's all about choice. Maurice chose the streets. Nobody in his family he was raised with chose the streets and they are doing very well for themselves. It's all about choices. I was raised by black folks. That doesn't mean I'm black or I know how it is to be black, that just gave me the ultimate understanding that I have choices to make.
