Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. Two of the biggest stars of the early dancehall era were Yellowman and Eek-a-Mouse. Dancehall brought a new generation of producers, including Linval Thompson, Gussie Clarke and Jah Thomas. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. (The word "bashment", a term originating in the 1990s, was used to describe a particularly good dance; for example "to go to a bashment dance". In the Dancehall vernacular, "bashment" is therefore an adjective instead of a noun.)

Dancehall é um estilo musical popular jamaicano que nasceu no fim dos anos 70. A princípio era um estilo mais escasso e menos político e religioso do reggae do que o estilo reggae roots que dominou a maior parte dos anos 70. O estilo moderno do dancehall, é híbrido e caracteriza um DJ ou um “MC-jay” que canta e produz as próprias batidas (riddim) com colagens de reggae ou com recursos musicais originais. Geralmente são abordados temas de rude boys. A estrutura musical é enraizada no reggae embora os ritmos jogados digitalmente o tornem consideravelmente mais rápido. Em meados dos anos 80, o instrumental ficou mais digital mudando o som consideravelmente. Com o tempo o dancehall digital (popularmente conhecido por ragga) foi cada vez mais sendo caracterizado por ritmos mais acelerados com pouca conexão com os ritmos do início do reggae. Pelos anos 90, o cruzamento do dancehall com muitos gangsta rap era comum.
