DJ Jazzy Jeff reacts to my tape scratching version of his Peter Piper routine

DJ Jazzy Jeff was a special guest at my company's 2022 holiday party, and while he was there, I got a chance to share my own rendition of his famous Peter Piper routine, which I performed on my musical invention, The ScrubBoard. Sharing this with him and seeing his reaction was truly one of the highlights of my life. The only problem was that this all happened over Zoom, because this was during covid, so I didn't actually get to meet him in person. But on the other hand, if it had been in person, I probably wouldn't have gotten the whole thing on video. And -- because he gave me permission -- I am now able to share the video with the world! Enjoy.

Jeremy would have melted the audience's faces off if he performed this live on the set of In Living Color in the 80's

Bro didn't just scratch he scarily recreated the whole routine. Props. The kick pedal aspect is lit as hell.

Getting that co-sign from Jazzy Jeff is like getting Steph Curry telling you that you have a nice shot, or Peyton Manning telling you "Nice Throw". That is the ultimate compliment.

Completely agree with your analogy! Except Peyton Manning was known for throwing "ducks" on the field meaning he threw a lot of wobbly passes. But he also threw a lot of wobbly touchdowns! LOL!

MATE! Why the hell is this not trending?! As someone who has seen Jam Master Jay do this live (and attempted to copy and fail on turntables myself), this was truly dope. Seriously, seriously dope. Massive respect to your technological talents, not to mention your musical talent.

Then you started doing your thing and I was so blown away. It was also cool to watch DJ Jazzy Jeff's reaction when you started going as well. Kudos to you! It was a privilege to get to watch that. It's like watching someone play a homemade trumpet, but it sounds exactly like a guitar solo. You are a genius for being able to take resulting sounds and patterns from one form, and use an entirely different form to reproduce them, and the experience of producing them as an artist. It's like reinventing the paint brush to look like a tomato, but yet it works just as well as the paint brush. In fact, it works better...you don't have to destroy vinyl. You can still get the analog feel for the turntables, as the DJ, not removed from it by technological advances of the last 2 decades...a real tactile control, much like an old muscle car, without the safety of traction control and anti-lock brakes; you're in control, for better or worse. And still getting to experience this active and hands-on way to interact with your instrument, without having to sacrifice vinyl...you could really be onto something. I'm more than impressed. Oh, and you could scratch like a mofo too? Showoff...lol

This was insane... The kind of mind it takes for one to turn a turntable into a tape...table...🤯 Imagine if we'd had this 30-40 years ago. What kind of other amazing music could already have been made. Not just HipHop, but also Techno/House, EDM, and others. And then there'd be a generation of people discussing the virtues of turntables vs tapetables.

That is awesome. Presumably, the added flexibility to tape scratching is that one can record whatever the heck you want onto the tape? If so, I see a lot of potential here... ❤👍
@yargnad
@yargnad 8 месяцев назад
I heard Kickstarter, which probably indicates he's working on a production model of this homebrew device. I would expect that he would add one, or possibly more, record heads into the mix for realtime sampling. The one issue I could see with that is this format is visual, as indicated by the marks on the tape - knowing where the realtime sample starts and stops would be tricky in this case. But I think an OLED screen along the bottom, which scrolls along with the tape, to indicate when a sample starts and stops would be a possible solution.
@sgtgrash
@sgtgrash 8 месяцев назад
@yargnad That's a good idea👍 I'm not very technical, but perhaps there's a way to embed a data feed & timecode onto the tape via a separate record head, which could be read & displayed in real time on your oled display.
