You don't have to stay on the scene for it to be Self-Defense. Most people, who get shot at and return fire, in a crowd of people where Chaos is breaking out, don't just stand there and wait around. You haul ass to safety. If that was the case though, you also don't wait for the Police to come find you a Month Later trying to flee to Mexico. That definitely hurts his defense, although he could still claim that he feared for his safety due to the fact he killed such a famous person and was worried about someone coming after him for revenge. Not sure that anyone is going to believe that though.
