I was an electronic music DJ (prog house/tech house) back in the day and I always had mad respect for battle DJs like this. I could never do what they do and it's so entertaining to watch. I remember seeing Qbert live and that shit blew my mind but what this kid is doing is on a whole other level.
It's nice to see younger people doing this. All this digital stuff around and there's still kids out there picking up some turntables and killing it like it was the 90s! This dude was a beast!
the main thing i like about RENA is his overall style its like Qbert's style but sped up, his skill is fucking incredible for his age better than adults that ive seen and he does know what he is doing most kids his age press play but he goes OLDSCHOOL. this is how DJ'S should mix and im happy this generation is keeping the art alive, much love from the UK
Wow... I've been mixing for a long time... And always followed DMC even their collections on vinyl.... But I've never seen anything like that... Amazing!!!! 😀
There are so many people on these videos who post totally ignorant comments knowing zero about this art form. Pretty disrespectful and pathetic. To all of you the simplest explanation is: he is using a turntable like a musical instrument, as if it were a piano. He's even making melodies by speeding up and slowing down the turntable on the long held out note for crying out loud. That's very difficult to do. He's basically being like a skilled acrobat or juggler. He's also making a completely new beat out of the original that's on recording. These are all techniques of manipulating sound, tiny increments of sound to make something completely new.
Doesn't change the fact it sounded like trash, there are a lot others on DMC doing better sounding beats, but yeah I get it, you are going to say that I'm ignorant and I don't know nothing about this just cause you saw one video about turntablerism.
Alex Gordeev I totally agree with every thing you've said but what's cracking me up is that this kid is not a boy she's from Japan if you go on her web site you'd see her at the age of 12 practicing in her room just as she got from school kentaro is her inspiration
Atoum Mirtu hip hop is not something where people talk and don't prove themselves that goes for breaking mc ing and turntableism so if you have the balls to put down a 16 year old girl from Japan then show us what you can do I'm excited to see peace
Fantastic chops; Orbits, flares, stabs, juggling, the whole nine. Plus @ that age. Wow! My only gripe, is altering the original song's patterns, speeds and even chopping it up into pieces to make it look like he is doing more than he actually is, to fit the pattern and speed of how he decides he wants to move his hands. Basically, DJs today figure out how they want to move their hands & in what pattern they want & then they adjust the record to fit the timing of their hand movement perfectly. If you are a turntablist or musician or both like myself(former team dmc champ), it's not hard to tell that, if he just let his record play without touching it at all, it would also sound like the record was juggling on its own. Or it may sound like it's skipping, it might have gaps in the beat, or the timing of say, the snares, are all pushed closer to each other. It's just not juggling the original song. He is not the only guilty one, nowadays all these kids are doing it, which sets the standard much much lower for everyone. So now it's, not about how dope you are, but how much time and money you are willing to put into pre-recording. They even prerecord scratches & then scratch over the pre-recorded scratches, which makes it sound like they are doing 3 times as much scratching than they actually are. So rather than learn to juggle or learn to scratch the hard way and develop a very difficult skill that takes A LOT of time, they just let the pre-recorded record do most of the work. It's also the DMC's fault, for allowing it to get this out of control. There should be some kind of rules, otherwise, let's just let the computers battle, play the prerecordings and remove the human component entirely. I gurantee, if you handed 2 real regular vinyl records to the entire group of these kids, 80% would not sound as dope as they do without their personal prerecordings. Not to say I don't love the direction of where battling has gone. But some things you have got to do for yourself. You can't let the machine do everything for you. Also, I'm pretty sure, Funky cold Medina was the only thing that did NOT sound altered and remained in it's original form. Kid is still absolutely amazing. Can't imagine how he'll sound in 5-10 years. Geez!!!
100 percent facts ! Tech is great but sadly has ruined some things a bit for me. Like dj'ing in general. im no expert on dmc shit but all i can say is this is all a bit OTT, its obvious all the song files have been overly tailor made. id much rather watch the old championships for sure
well he probably started at very young age and hasn't stopped practicing for years and years and he seems really passionate about DJing obviously so of course hell get that good at that age. dont let young prodigy's discourage you at making something you love because eventually someone like him will reach an obstacle they cant overcome.

A proper scratch DJ set. It may have not been musically to the your taste the best but the skill is definitely there and he has time to improve that. Most of the other DJ sets on here are sets for clubs but are not in the original spirit of DMC. The great Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money and the OG Cheese would be turning in their graves if they were dead at the current state of DMC. Nice work Rena.
I think we have reached the point we need 4 turntables and we will have to be able to scratch them all at the same time, meaning we will have to use both hands and feet. Rig up the cross fader to be operated with tongue. It is possible to progress further than prerecorded sessions being acted out. It’ll be like some Scratch Perverts stuff, only done with one person.
I can see why people voted down. Yes he is incredibly musically talented but this set is mainly about “look what I can do” not a mix. I still voted up tho
four and a half thousand wannabe dj's ages ranging from 20 to 40 probably, hating massively on what they wished they would have been at 12, but still arent at 20 to 40, have disliked this absolute talent... come on, lil muggerman put a fresh drum n bass in there... cant go wrong with that when it comes to rythm.
Can we talk about what he did with the rotation speed knobs for a second?? I’ve always (SINCE FOREVER) imagined this possible, but didn’t think it could/would ever manifest. Until now. YES. and that’s something very very old school. Most modern DJs don’t even know that knob is there.
This kid is reallygood just ......technology makes DJing so much easier now. Djs today don't have to worry about skipping the record because it is virtually impossible with Serato. Mixers are programmed with everything you need. Knowing the record as well as the song used to be important. Any noise can be used to scratch with. Having limits really challenged a DJ to be unique. Most of these new dj's just manipulate noise and don't reinvent the music,.
im old. i remember skratching involved fingers on vinyl....DMC tapes was the thing in my days, things die and become youtube...kinda feel sorry that kids will never experience a skratch battle.
Damn, this dude is fucking incredible! I look forward to seeing what he does with his talent. When you're as passionate as this guy is about his craft, certified dope will only follow.
Damn watching old vids of DMC from the 90s was actual art. Hate all these preloaded disks. He showcased some nice skills for 2017 but they don't compare to the old days.
