DJ Rob Swift further explains dropping on "the one"

The concept of dropping a song's drum beat on "the one" is simple. You
grab the record, cue yourself to the start point of "the one" and
launch the wax forward on beat. Yet, there are "DJs" who get hired
every weekend to play out, that cannot perform this rudimentary task.
I blame technology. Well not technology itself but the mindset behind
today's technology. Laptops and DJ apps have turned what was once an
art that was based on defying creative limits into I'll just use my
Hot Cues or look at the wav. on my Serato to find "the one".
The purpose of this tutorial is to reintroduce the aforementioned DJs
to a vital skill set every person who calls themselves a DJ must have.

For newbies: Something that helped me along the way was learning how to count - if it's 1,2,3,4 or 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 or 1 and uh 2 and uh 3 and uh 4 so you can keep time in swing. Clock/quick mix theory is also relevant (spinning back your cue 3-4 rotations to get back the beginning of your loop for example). Always great lessons here - thanks Rob Swift!!!!

No doubt definitely I've been DJing since 1989 I want to learn how to play the drums taught me how to do it that's how I timed myself I also started out with two Gemini DJ q 1200 try to dj on them or two Technics sl-D1 manual decks hit both have terrible torque to make up for it i had to use wax paper and thin slip mad Penny on the headshell keep the cartridge in the groove of real records no mp3 in my day or cdj so that old-fashioned cute fader played a role or if you didn't have that just regular cue buttons beat matching was challenge no sync button then

I've Jayed for many years as a semi pro with wax and now a complete scrub using Mp3 Traktor A 6 SCRATCH... Sometimes it's Hard to have fun when you are trying to impress... Rob is a great teacher because he's impress by you just being able to follow instructions... it's easy once you get a feel for what you are doing, but I sure do miss the days of scratching on that whack B.S.R. All in one turntables and stereo, cause coming from nothing helps you understand that it's all the same, fun and a whole lot of practice...

Hey Rob I do split cue with my djm 909(will that eliminate the moving headphone L/R?)with monitor and fader set to sharp cut and curve. Should I be setting it to X fade. And why not count the revolutions back to 12 o'clock? These are always awesome videos to watch.

I suggest moving the headphone fader all the way to the side you're cueing. Splitting the sound from each turntable can get confusing. Counting revolutions will distract you from listening.

I love your vids, bro... I notice some of your students concentrate too much on what they're doing and trying to avoid mistakes, rather than just feeling the music and getting loose...

You kind of launch the record forward then move fader? Or is it simultaneous
@JRMSS4
@JRMSS4 7 лет назад
Simultaneously, so that you don't cut the beat out.

I feel like if he were baby scratching then one beat he'd have better results than going from dead stop
