Endtroducing literally changed my life. Since being exposed in '96, I've devoted my life to music... This album is ABSOLUTELY his best work since. I'm blown tf away
Yeah its fucking gorgeous. Each song seems like a long story within itself while holding onto the web of feeling for the album as an entirety, complete with seamless stitches in between tracks
that's not true at all man. what you're basically saying is you can only listen to something once - good or bad. you could not be in the right head space when listening to something for first time, could be expecting something else and have that affect your initial listen. could read an interview and read an artist say, yeah i'm trying to get back to my roots so like in this case, that would mean 'yeah I'm trying to get back to that entroducing shit.." so you're expecting that and this clearly isn't that album at all. he coulda just been saying, process wise I was trying to get back to my roots. not saying he said that, but that's just an example of what artists will sometimes say. cats are too quick to call something great or wack after one listen. give shit time to breathe, live with something for a while before saying it's the best shit since sliced bread or dumping it in the trash bin. your first impression when it comes to music, usually isn't your final thoughts about an album. if your first impression is this is great... chances are a month later, you're saying this album is FUCKING AWESOME. if your first impression is eh, I'm not sure I like this... you could put it away and go back six months later and say YOO! I'm really feeling this, if you just went off that first listen... you might not ever realize you really do enjoy an album.
+paul maxwell bro there is science that says you don't enjoy music as much as when you are a kid. But I agree if you don't it at first chances are it's not for you. But I have heard stuff I initially didn't like from artists but coming back to it in a different mood it's better
+paul maxwell well, having listened to all of his albums as they came out, i actually find this album to be fantastic. his sound may just have evolved in a direction you don't appreciate, whereas my tastes grew in the same direction as his.
Artist make music that they would want to listen to. They evolve and teach through the artform itself... then we have lil fan boys who want shit to sound like the first time they heard Shadow forever... grow up you old kidz.
You literally found it remarkable (because you took the time to remark on it) but you also called it common. Is it remarkably common? lol. No worries. I know what you were trying to say. That is the magic of art. When I write my stuff I begin by selecting 1 high, 1 mid, and 1 low- that is it.. Vocals and percussion are added later but even that is kept to a minimum so the entire track - even if you can pick out 20 different sounds or "samples" in it - consists of just those 3 original sounds. The measure of a master (when it comes to anything) is literally the measure of what they are capable of producing or creating in relation to what they have to work with. Here is a classic example of one of those masterpieces in electronic music. (Mission Control: Outta Limits) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dw8_sOjeeoA.html
It's like a trip-hop journey through the fevered dreams of Quentin Tarantino. I love it on first listen. Moody, atmospheric, good beats. It turned me right around on a bad night. This is the Shadow I've been waiting for for twenty years. Got to admit, though: that title track is just a shameless shout-out to some wing-suit crazy person to turn it into a video. I like the track, but it's remarkably safe.
Good musical moment for DJ Shadow! A real artist always has an album like this, very expressive. Excellent job. Peace from Brasil. THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.
2023 is literally using Shadows genius to move hop urban and rap to the next level. Shadows art is not for the one's who lack foresight or natural ability to understand forward culture. I feel sad for those folks. Don't worry you will get it one day. Keep trying you can do it.
Just listened to this in it's entirety (I had only heard 1 of the songs from this album previously). What a masterpiece! Nothing boring or common about this...I loved the complexity of the beats and the journey that they took me on. So great!!!
If your not taken on a journey with this, I'm not sure what to tell you. I understand comparisons past to present. Its hard not to. I get it. This album is so packed with atmosphere, progression, street beats, and vision however, that I fail to see how anyone remotely musically inclined would not give this album a chance or some credit for originality. Sir DJ Shadow is not a one-trick pony. He is an artist that can convey emotional gravity into electronic music.
Just bought this on vinyl. It's got great bass management, tasty samples and a splash of polyrhythm thrown in somewhere in the middle. Oddly enough, I only have this and ...endtroducing, but I love them both. It's great to see how much he's evolved over the years.
Josh Davis did not make it Into the Guinness book of world records for nothing. very versatile and very experimental stuff, still fresh as it was in when he was on soulsides and mo wax days. seeing Josh in Dallas July 22 for the first since 20 years. house of blues July 22 2017 can't wait!
I love DJ Shadow because he is a fucking human and start his shows by saying 'hi', presenting him and talking in the local language. Like on this album wich is strating by 'hi'. Thanks for your work !
They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! Revelation 6:16
Just imagine being in an environment of having any music you wanted, along with almost any music making equipment you can imagine.....well that's where this guy is...and he is just one guy.....yet gives you (the listener) the sound of a full band in true hip hop history...amazing....
DJ Shadow have not one bad song. Just listen it all and U find Your soul. Maybe in couple of minutes, maybe later. But U will love that sounds for ever and ever and ever. My live is better with Dj Shadow´s music since 20 years.
I really like this album. Every song is unique, which I enjoy and respect. I think a lot of people aren't comfortable with experimentation but I think it paid off. Keep it up DJ Shadow :)
Nothing common or simple about shadow unless he wants either by design..... What is common is the legacy and influence his touch has injected into EVERYONE! Thank you brethren shadow.
This is an epic piece of art. Only as the entire thing concluded with Suicide Pact did I realise I was on a journey.. a very particular journey. Only then did I understand what this was. One day, #TheMountainWILLFall and when it does...
Dj Shadow for the win! This album is seriously some next level shit. Just caught the tour in Portland, OR, 7/15/2017 and hot damn his visual game is mind blowing, not to even mention how smooth his scratching/mixing is. New found respect for one of my favorite artists, Dj Shadow is truly legendary.
Love it, a sleeper classic for sure (give it a decade for the usual posers to catch-on to the sound of now) - not reinventing the wheel exactly, but definitely stands-out from the crowd. Taut, understated, hard-bangin' electro/hip hop. Beautifully mixed too - best workout my car subs have had in way too long.
The thing that hit me the most is his work with NIls Frahm. Soo... 2 most different and 2 most challenging guys made something toghether. And this aint bad :]
I hear DJs trying to do this all the time. With much less success. DJ Shadow pushing it forward. The whole idea here is to listen to something new. He got me on new sounds in this album like no other. Cant wait to trip and listen.
Pretty sure it's a representation of the day where the king ruling our society will fall off his mountain. Most album art ties into the message of the disk.
to all of the people talking shit about this album....... lets see what you can put out there. are you making music? or are you sitting in you room judging someone else s work. lets all make sure we have our own lives in order before we judge someone else.
Listening for the first time, I hear a relative barrage of noisier-than-usual samples for a DJShadow album, but what strikes me is his typically unpredictable approach. You never know what's coming next with this guy! Preemptive Strike and Endtroducing are desert island discs for me, because I love the moodier, more downtempo side of Shadow, so for me, the highlights on this album are Ashes to Oceans, California and Suicide Pact.
Hey, here's a question for all you "critics" - when did music and freedom of expression become something that is supposed to conform to something you enjoyed 20 years ago ? At what point did these people become accountable to your tastes and dislikes ? As far as I can tell, you want to be the "real" ones, and as far as I can hear, this record is really not far removed from Entroducing, it's in fact far closer to it than most of his albums. The fact that you enjoy a certain atmos and a certain style in beats and cuts does simply not make you an authority in music. We are entitled to our opinions and should be grateful that this guy is still making music at all, he really doesn't have to do that, and he's not doing it for you. So shut your trap, you belittle us all with this nonsense, goes for both sides of the argument. Get some turntables and show us how it's supposed to be done then, I'm sure we'll enjoy it while the "others" will hate on it for ripping Shadow's grooves. Peace.
Really liking this, I wasn't expecting it to sound much like ...entroducing at all yet it has a lot of the quirks and trademarks that I expect from DJ Shadow, I like the subtlety and modern feel. Much like ...entroducing this is very atmospheric but in a different way, almost similar to early garage/dubstep acts like Burial.
This album is impressive. It's one of DJ Shadow's best, no doubt. The only track that I skip every single time that I play the album is "Nobody Speak". It's like a song you could hear in the soundtrack of a Hollywood movie starring The Rock or Kevin Heart. You know, like that tunes The Black Keys make for ads. It just doesn' t fit with the incredible level of emotional nuance of the rest of the tracks. It feels... silly, shallow and "fun".
Worth the price of the album for "Mountain Will Fall" (which stands out FAR in front of everything else) and "Bergschrund" (which is a German word for the fissure at the top of a glacier).
