When I lived in California I went to a powwow for Navajo with next-door neighbor that was like a mom to me. It’s a lot different from the Cherokee but it did remind me of some of the Mexican culture. I lived in El Cajon California which is not very far from the border of Mexico where i used to go surfing Rosarito passed Tijuana

@@monsterpoo It WASN"T the right wingers that freed the slaves. The Republicans were the progressives of their time. Look at the electoral college for the 1800s/late 1800s/1890, etc. New England wasn't Republican back then because it was "right wing", that's for sure. The SOUTH was the right wing area, but they were Democrats, because the Democrats at THAT time were the Right wingers. The parties started to switch sides at the turn of the century. The fact that you don't know that means you must have been educated in a Republican STATE. ALl you have to do is look at the electoral college from that time period and read a little history.

I discovered this fantastic via Norwegian radio. A Sami (indiginous minority on the Scandinavian peninsula) artist was interviewed, and she told that when she was DJ'ing on festivals, this song always got everybody up on their feet. Furthermore, when finding it on youtube, I loved the video. Many school books show a very stereotypical image of any indigenous peoples around the world, and I found this video very refreshing. Working as a teacher, this video is definately going to be shown to my students :)

Hitler loves stories about cowboys murdering Native Americans. The Brits were worse than Nazis. Glad I'm Spanish. Most Hispanics are Native Americans, but they lie to you saying that everyone is mixed when you can see that's not true just by looking at their faces. I'm a Spaniard born in Mesoamérica between the most glorious Native American civilizations: Mayan, Aztec and Incan. Most Hondurans are Lencas, Misquitos or Mayans. Argentina committed a genocide against Fuegians with British involvement and Darwin's influence but that was not the Spanish Empire that did it. Guatemala committed a genocide against Mayans, but, again, that was NOT the Spanish Empire that did it. It was liberals who were independent of creationist and conservative Spain. All races are from Adam means racism is heresy. One of the conquistadores was a black man from the Congo, Juan Garrido. Seminoles fled the racist Brits for the sanctuary of Spanish Florida.

I was taken by surprise seeing the hidden leaf symbol on his headpiece, but then I looked closer at everyone else's outfits-- there was a man with the emblem of the US Marine Corps, a man with what I think is a Christian cross, etc. It was interesting that different, unique parts of the wearer were on their garments. That’s also how she found out that her dad isn’t her real dad. Plot twist his uncle is her dad. Snow Raven says, "we are all indigenous to Mother Earth." Whatever our backgrounds, there is a deep resonance with native culture. It's who we all are, it's just unrecognised. My mother's ancestors were Norwegian Viking. I had an almost magnetic attraction for that country long before I knew the ancestral connection. I believe if we are to save our planet, we need to listen to the oldest cultures that knew how to respect the earth.

Fell into the rabbit hole of ethnic folk musics exploring Celtic/Nordic tunes and realized how at home much would be at the local Pow Wows. Followed the old trade routes through so many different cultures and discovered if one goes back far enough in time we were all playing the same tune. That you could take a genre for which I have little use and make me see it with an new appreciation is impressive. Awesome, no other word I now gives this its due.

It wasn't all Europeans the British did supply chief black fish of the Shawnee with weapons, and payed to have colonies burned for simple men themselves surviving in no taxed lands, Daniel Boone was a simple frontiersman who only wanted to escape British tyrants in a small colonie, once he built Boonesborough it was a small peaceful place, the British were at war with American freedom, paid black fish to take out Boonesborough but failed with 1500 Shawnee versus 70 colonists, after Boone defeats black fish, even though black fish had his daughter kidnapped and Boone saved her, then Boone himself is taken by black fish and sold to the British, the plan surrender freedom of just living in the woods bothering no one Boone escaped black fish by miracle, to the fort, to get ready to fight and defeats the Shawnee way out numbered, the virginia milisha shows up to massacre the Shawnee and Boone after all that wouldn't give up there camp that is a man, davy crockett tried very hard to stop the trail of tears, you are confused about types of people you have your Boones and crocketts then you have men like Andrew Jackson wanting more and more, if the British didn't bring people from all places here to rule them, then go to war with them, historical colonies and say the 7 nations could be one, if Sherman tecumseh who doesn't deserve the name of the great Shawnee warrior chief didn't commit massacres and steal lands promised on paper, then yeah just maybe but it's not European men. It's men of power from all around the world. The end lol

Of course it may be a bit more in those countries, but I feel like most people feel like that. I’m our modern world most people are kind of cut off from most of their culture, hence why in many European countries the sort of pagan stuff is coming back. I know a lot of kids that think Disney made the fairy tales and not that it belongs to our actual culture. A lot of things bf off forgotten or downplayed or ignored because other things are bigger than stuff like this

(Sorry for rambling, I have ADHD and it's the middle of the night. Your comment made me think of many things. I hope you find that sense of community and culture, yourself. It's alright if you don't read this novel of a comment, though. Take care) Very true, humans really long for connection, identity, community, feeling like we are part of something bigger than ourselves and feeling like you are home. Especially those of us cut off from the culture and/land of our ancestors, whether through colonization, being orphaned, diaspora, etc. It hurts to think of all of the knowledge, stories, experiences, and culture we miss out on, how much is forever lost to time because people were killed or died without being able to pass it on. I grew up away from any relatives aside from my parents and siblings, hearing the small bits of info about our ancestors when the people who could tell the whole story are dead is heartbreaking. At most, when it comes to Native American ancestry, it seems that my most recent ancestor was hundreds of years ago, at least as far as I can find when it comes to my family tree. I was honest about this when I joined a local beading circle that taught traditional Native beading. They welcomed me wholeheartedly, saying that even if I was simply an ally without any Native blood if it turns out the family rumors were false, I was still very much welcome to join them and learn the culture. Their only rule was that non-Natives (those of us without ancestors in the past few generations) cannot take what we learn and make that is specific to Native cultures and earn money with it. We are free to trade or give things away or sell beaded items that don't use native techniques or patterns, as long as we are respectful. I've never felt more at home than when I am with them. I even (with permission) learned a traditional medicine for arthritis and was gifted tobacco to offer when harvesting the ingredients and made it for those in the group suffering from arthritis and joint pain 😊 doing it the traditional way (but with a crock pot and coconut oil instead of a fire and bear grease) was a long and challenging task, but it really means so much more to them when they know that the medicine was harvested the way their culture does it. They believe that the intentions and process make it work so much more strongly than if I'd simply gathered the plants without the thought, respect, and thanks (in the form of tobacco). And maybe it does, either way it really is effective. And being accepted, having the chance to help the group, it gives me a sense of peace, belonging, and purpose that wasn't there before.

Fwiw, I'm an old white chick from Alabama: the first great live music I heard was at an A.M.E. Church when I was a little girl. We were outliers in that we felt most country music was racist - in content and vibrationally speaking. (This has only ramped up since 2016, unfortunately.) I suppose it was only fate that I was born in a family who stood against racism - I could've ended up one of the haters - ones who claimed to be Christian at that. And the massive irony of having ancestors flee Ireland's famine and persecution only to become racist in the American deep south does not elude me. It's impossible to hear tribal music and not think of everything 'my people' missed by being imperialist - and worse. I'm only a bystander, but a grateful one: there are holy dances, sacred songs that need to be protected and archived for the world to know. Paz y luz. 🌏🍃🦅🔥🔭🌙✨📿🙏

Serious question: What exactly IS a "Pow-wow?" I can see that there is space made for "outsiders" who want to come and watch; but I get the feeling that this is something for members of the tribe. Is it a conference? Is it like a family reunion? Is it a time of catching up with one another? Does business of any type get done? I feels like something more meaningful than a "show" is happening, but I feel that I don't understand.
