Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Philly legend Tat Money. Man, I’m still a huge fan of Steady B and the HillTop Hustlers. Steady B was an underrated mc from that era. I still rock “Bring the Beat Back”, “Analogy of A Blackman”, “My Benz”, “Let da Hustlers Play”, and “Nothing but the Bass” till this day. Fresh in the playlist.

Ah, the ORIGINAL Funk-O-Mart, when you came out of the subway at City Hall and it was on the left side of Market Street before they put a Marriott Hotel there and moved it down the street on the opposite side... It was HUGE! Used to buy many promotional records and posters there from 1987 until it moved in the early '90s... Funk-O-Mart, Sound Of Market were the best record stores in Philly for Hip-Hop, and, to a lesser degree, Armand's. If you didn't wanna travel downtown (I used to live in West Oak Lane), there was the record store at Broad & Chew or Sound Of Germantown but they weren't as big... I miss those days but glad to hear Tat Money talk about that place. Never knew he worked there. Wish I went before he started making records so I could point to the back of a Steady B or Kwame record and say, "I remember this dude when he worked at Funk-O-Mart." Haha.
@misterelom
@misterelom 2 года назад
Yeah man I remember going to the original one back in junior high in the 80s, brings back memories. Sound of Market was my favorite spot to buy CDs in the 90s. Then there was Uptown Flava a few stores down and I used to go there to buy mixtapes back in the DJ Clue, Kay Slay, etc. days.
@usupreme
@usupreme 2 года назад
Yeah man, you used to go downstairs at the original funk o mart. I remember when Heather Hunter came down to sound of market. I didn't know who she was. I had never seen a porn tape at that time. But my older cousin did and got a pic with her. He took me down there.
@monolithic87
@monolithic87 2 года назад
@@usupreme Yeah, downstairs and turn right where you’d be greeted by big-ass PVS speakers for sale and whatnot as soon as you hit the floor. It was only on the way out when I’d notice the sales display case with brass knuckles, butterfly knives and drug paraphernalia in it. Haha… Heather Hunter? A friend of mine got a Polaroid instant pic with her around the corner at a Walnut Street porn tape spot in the early-‘90s where she was doing some promo or whatever… Very pretty but I marveled at how small she was in person. He used to keep it hidden inside his ‘Who’s The Man?’ Soundtrack CD. Haha.
@monolithic87
@monolithic87 2 года назад
@@misterelom I mainly started going to Sound Of Market because Funk-O-Mart was gone - and that was in the early ‘90s when I was only buying CD’s. I wouldn’t find out Funk-O-Mart moved until later that decade... Uptown Flava sounds late ‘90s. Not sure I heard of that place.

I promoted a party in 1998 when I was 18 years old at the old freightyard in Allentown and got TAT down from Philly. He was cool as ish. I rocked all his tapes back then. I figured out how to crab scratch from listening to his mixes on power99 (Tat and Cosmic Kev) and of course the tapes. I looked up to this guy so hard. I remember asking him how old he was when I met him... he looks at me and tells me "I'm older than the moon and the stars" compared to you. I laughed man. Cool guy. What up TAT. --DJ Wiz from Bhem.

TAT is speaking about the console stereo, that was a multiple component set, housed in a singular, usually rectangular piece of wooden or wood composite furniture. Some even had a 13-19 inch television screen on the front! They were often made by Magnavox, Philco or Zenith, among others and a wooden lid covered it. You would lift the lid and at the bottom would be a 4(!) speed turntable, 16/33/45/78 (usually to the far right) with a radio tuner attached to the same panel. These turntables featured a long spindle, resembling a screwdriver and an arm that held the records on the spindle and allowed for the playing of multiple records by forcing the next one down onto the platter, forming a stack of musical pancakes! If you had 45s, you'd have to get inserts in order to fit the holes of the 45s onto the narrow spindle made for albums...Those were the days!

Tat had the fly half-fro. We were rocking the wild cuts in that late 80's early 90's era. I always thought Biggie was a sucka for that Kwame line. That sht wasn't necessary. He did the same sht with Xscape. He was kind of an asshole, just dissn people he didn't even have dealings with. Kwame was ill and had an album out at 16. He was producing hits, movie scores, etc. into the next century after Biggie's ass was long gone.
