From the Academy-Award winning film, Django Unchained.
In 1858 Texas, brothers Ace and Dicky Speck drive a group of shackled black slaves on foot. Among them is Django, sold off and separated from his wife Broomhilda von Shaft, a house slave who speaks German and English. They are stopped by Dr. King Schultz, a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter seeking to buy Django for his knowledge of the three outlaw Brittle brothers, overseers at the plantation of Django's previous owner and for whom Schultz has a warrant. When Ace refuses to sell Django to Schultz and levels his gun at him, Schultz kills him and shoots Dicky's horse in order to pin him to the ground. Schultz insists on paying a fair price for Django before leaving the other slaves to kill Dicky. Schultz offers Django his freedom and $75 in exchange for help tracking down the Brittles.
While Big Daddy Bennett and Dr. Schultz discuss terms, Django is given a tour of the plantation by a house slave. During the tour, he asks the slave if three brothers by the name of Brittle are employed at the plantation. The slave is confused but says that three brothers named Schaffer were recently employed. Django spies one of the brothers overseeing the field slaves and another brother who is about to whip a slave for breaking eggs. Django has flashbacks to when the Brittles whipped Broomhilda while Django pleaded with them to not do it
After his ruse is discovered and Dr. Schultz is killed, Django is sent to be work in a limestone quarry for the rest of his life, but he escapes and returns to Candieland to avenge Dr. Schultz and D'Artangan. He ambushes the slave trackers.
Tarantino uses the plot device of actors doing something in rhythm like the ticking of a clock. The crack of the whip. This foreshadows that their time is running out and that bloodshed will ensue.

I was thinking the same thing. That whole flashback is upsetting to watch honestly. It does make the revenge scene very satisfying. Its Terrifying to think about how all of the awful torture/brutality/murders in this movie really did happen in the US. 😢

It happened worldwide for thousands of years before the US existed. It still happens in parts of the world, look up which continent has the most slaves to this day. You might find it was the same one that sold them originally. Some things never change.

Slavery is endorsed in the bible. It was a completely normal thing until relatively recent history. Completely normal as in King William the Conqueror outlawing the act of selling people out of the country(England) back in ~1000 AD was an almost unheard of thing to do.

@@ShaggyRogers1 I wouldn't say endorsed, moreso tolerated. In the Old Testament, yes, but if we wish to use the same lens that we examine native American sacrificial rituals with, then the slavery within the Bible is not only normal for the area (Ancient Near East), but the New Testament goes onto say that slaves are, in fact people, (Galatians 3:28) liberated through Jesus' sacrifice. Although I do agree it is a barbaric practice.

This is what Tarantino excels at. You know he's going to get payback and you know damn well he's not going to subvert your expectations at the last minute. There were many people like them. It's not like there weren't people who did similar things back then. Bounty hunters, freed slaves, working together to bring assholes to justice or just for revenge. There just aren't many written stories from them about it because that's a perfect way to get someone to come after you and your family down the line. They just did what they felt they had the right or need to do to balance the scales and didn't feel the need to draw attention to themselves for doing so. But to believe that EVERYONE simply ignored the horrific shit is foolish, humans are (by and large) selfish creatures but it's not really in everyday normal people to see that level of suffering first hand and to not help in whatever way you can. Now the kids who grew up in families that owned slaves wouldn't actually know any better until/unless they visited places where it wasn't the norm, as they'd have been taught since birth that it is the way of things and so even if they felt it was wrong, they'd have mostly just stood idle because a lifetime of seeing it would have added loads of redundancy to the belief that was instilled in them. But slavery has existed as long as the human race has and comparatively speaking America got rid of it faster than anywhere else, which was good although I think everyone wishes it had been even faster. We also had far fewer slaves than most other countries, that doesn't mean that their suffering wasn't just as horrible, just that it luckily didn't go on as long as it could have. Humans are shitty people on the whole but it'd be a lie to say that we weren't at least capable of learning from shit that was so obviously wrong.

so many possibilities. maybe she is a repeat victim, with a scheduled flogging, as another commenter contributed. Maybe she could hear the screams; Lil' Jodie was pretty loud, and sound travels well over a flat plantation like that. Also, consider that the first time we see her, Lil' Jodie is forcing them to drag her to the spot that they plan to whip her. Maybe she forced them to drag her the whole way there. additionally, the girl Django talks to is obviously a slave that works in the house, so she was probably near enough to hear the fallout after the eggs were broken, and being a slave, she also knows where the whipping spot is, as well as the usual tactic of forcing the slave masters to drag you to the whipping tree.

My friend, the mirror is there so that the slave masters can see the faces of their victims as they whip them, and adds to the slave's terror because they can see the whipping as its about to happen. You can see in this scene that because of its position, Lil' Jodie gets a chance to see the silhouette of her savior, Django. It isn't a painting. however, I had never noticed it before you pointed it out, and I really appreciate that you took the time to do so, thank you.
