The guy soloing is Tchavolo Schmitt, the guy with the white shirt to his left is his son Sansom Schmitt who is an incredible talent as well. The guitarist to Tchavolo's right who's standing is Angelo Debare, another super player. The accordian player is Richard Galliano. Met Tchavolo and Sansom at a jazz club in Seattle a few years ago, really nice guys.
Here you have all the details: Django Reinhardt NY Festival 2005 At Birdland Dorado Schmitt (he looks like Django), Samson Schmitt (his son, to the right of him), Angelo Debarre (in the back) on guitars, Pierre Blanchard at violin, Brian Torff on double bass, Ludovic Beier accordeon, Ken Peplowski on clarinet (awesome), Joel Frahm (sax), David Langlois (Washboard Percussion), Roger Kellaway (piano), Gordon Lane (brushes).
Thanks for the clarification, I did not think Django was around at the time of the Jazz Festival. He sure looks like him but the guy playing has all his fingers. Thanks again for the info.
The talent here is at a different level. I love Jazz of all types except for some of the later day west coast jazz. But the jazz of the 40's, 50' and 60's were outstanding and each year an outstanding musician was always prominent from Gene Kruper, and Ziggy Elman, to Benny Goodman and Woody Herman, and Barney Kessel, etc. The Music of Django's period was extra special you could listen for hours, I love it.
That is just one of the greatest f****** jam sessions of all the time. If there's one regretted I had in life it would be that I wasn't there in person but thank God they f****** recorded it. Oh my god thank god
"Willie Nelson has been a lifelong Reinhardt fan, stating in his memoir, "This was a man who changed my musical life by giving me a whole new perspective on the guitar and, on an even more profound level, on my relationship with sound...During my formative years, as I listened to Django's records, especially songs like 'Nuages' that I would play for the rest of my life, I studied his technique. Even more, I studied his gentleness. I love the human sound he gave his acoustic guitar
Everything about this is just, perfect. Everyone adds their own style to it. And it becomes something entire different. Like a new entity. I love music.
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost my password. I love any assistance you can give me.
Jan - this remains my favorite - "it was a special space and time in this universe, when each of these artists/geniuses came together for this event and simply created a perfection performance honoring Django's work" Enjoy this so and appreciate your sharing, each time.
Stupefacente! Marvellous
I have but one regret: I wish I would have been there. Wow! What incredible musicians. This is now on my list of Top Ten All-Time Videos. Thanks for posting it.
Szkoda.
PEOPLE: The 'Django Reinhardt New York City Festival', NOT Django Reinhardt playing AT the New York City Festival (which would be kind of hard, considering it was created 47 years after his death). This is a very good tribute posted under a misleading title.
I was totally blown away from the Musicians.....UNREAL...OUTRAGEOUS AND un BELIEVEABLE.....dont care even if its spelled wrong.....THE BEST I HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME...I want to be there the next time.....DOGS LOVE COMPANY come on over.....and JOIN in...sc

I got to wonder if The Gypsy Kings are diggin' on this clip - Jan - YOU SO ROCK! Would pay for the privilege to listen to the guys - anytime - Love Gypsy Jazz - and these guys do it so right!
Jim Hart Love your comment - reminds me so much of a dear friend that's gone on to the next level - and I appreciate the memories you evoked... God bless "Larry Cohen" one of the funniest, coolest, true-real men - beloved friend - I miss ya - Lar... Priceless perfection 🔯
For of those of you who are on a different planet Django has been dead for several years, you are watching a tribute to Django at the New York City Festival, and yes the lead guitarist has a resemblance to Django and is very good at playing his style and of course he has all his fingers on both hands. This was a great video much thanks to LLoy to sharing.
Holy shit, that's Joel Frahm on tenor sax! Anyone know the rest of the players? Someone, quick.. put a microphone near that violin! Great players, all... monster performance.
David Langlois is playing percussion and the clarinetist is Ken Peplowski. Ludovic Beier is on accordion and I believe Marius Apostol is playing the violin. I also thought I heard the announcer say Tsovalo Schmitt performed (also on guitar).
All I can is WOW!!!!!!!! Gypsy Jazz is another great form of jazz. What giants Django and Stephan were!!! Love, love love this group. When you hear Gypsy Jazz everything seems right in the world. I dare you to sit quietly. ❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊. 🙏🏻🌻❤️🌻🙏🏻
Yes you’re right that is Bireli!!!!!!! Always sorry I never got to see Django. Bireli does not disappoint🤩. Remember to count fingers to be sure you’re seeing Django.😉
No bireli is not on that stage, the guitarists are dorado schmitt (the django lookalike) his son sitting front row and angelo debarre in the back standing.
These are the best gypsy style players in the biz. Most of them have been playing with each other for years at concerts, festivals, etc. All of them idolized Django and continue to perform this wonderful music. (Btw, check out Joscho Stephan to hear another great gypsy player - and don't forget Tommy Emmanuel, perhaps the best acoustic guitar player around - you might just want to burn your guitar after hearing him).
Danke! Marco Ferraturi
