i'm not a drum expert but i remember reading on wikipedia that the djembe has like 25 sounds but that even the experts mostly just use the 3 regular ones, so that's interesting

Drumming is all about technique. Simple. Technique is the foundation. Everything comes later, all improvisation , melody ect. Therefore any master showcases his skill first with his technique, and then with his own melody and improvisation. Every drumming style is different and therefore demands different technique, to say one is better or superior is childish. Respect that all instruments take a particular technique to master and the sound produced reflects the instrument and the player.

Very well said Toniba75. As a spiritual Brother I pray that the Latino players read this. For they all play alike, with speed instead of groove. Not to talk against it, because it's a beautiful thing to watch and admire. But I prefer groove over what they do....Just saying my opinion as a "grown man." Blessings all hand drummers!

@markpaycer6908
@markpaycer6908 4 года назад
I have been playing for years and some people play the slap a little different with hands angled closer to drum. My tones are with more hands than a slap with more of the fingers, its finding that balance but giving it there distinction.

It's like beatboxing, not speech. The "verbal counterparts" are not actually words but in fact mimic the sound of the drum itself. The West African rhythms though actually mimic speech. Africans used their rhythms to communicate messages across empires in Africa the size of the United States. They also used them during colonial times to orchestrate rebellions, which is why they were banned in the U.S. during slavery.

i like the sound of your djembe. im looking to buy one myself, but dont know what to look for. what difference in sound would a 10" djembe have to say a 7" or 12"? also fiberglass or wood? are larger drums harder to play ? i am a beginner
@ianprescott7924
@ianprescott7924 7 лет назад
bluebanana61 Hi. I was also unsure what to go with before I bought my djembe a month ago. I'd say larger drums are easier to play before you have more room to be creative, unless you're looking for something you can carry around. Wooden djembe have a very authentic, natural feel and sound to them while fiberglass have a more modern, Latin American feel and sound. It's all about preference and personality, really. If you want to be able to go crazy on a djembe, I'd invest in a larger size one. I personally have a 10" NINO Percussions djembe and I love it. Regardless, all djembe are wonderful instruments to learn and be able to really pour your spirit into it. :)

Drums around Africa reflect the language and human speech of their region. That is why Senegalese talking drums sound different to Nigerian ones. They tell the dancer how to move, when to change step etc. You need to talk to true Indian scholars who would tell you of "indigenous" people of India (Africans) & the roots of "Aryan" Indian music. Ethiopia's territories spread right into India. Where does the name Ganges come from and why is it Holy? If you think unconnected, you havent arrived.
