It is located on the site of the ancient city of Voia, in a calm bay. Behind Neapolis is the mountainous massif of Krithina, which ends at Cape Maleas. Neapoli is connected by ferry to Kythera and Antikythera. It was built in the period 1837 - 1840 on the site of the ancient Voia (Vatika).
Voiai was an ancient city, which was created between 1050 BC. and 950 BC by Heraklides Boias, belonged to the Common of the Eleftherolakons, which consisted of 18 cities. The city flourished during Roman times as a trading port, but by late antiquity it had declined. Subsequently, various settlements known as Vatika (corruption of the word Voiatika) appeared. During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of the region seem to have spoken a linguistic idiom similar to that of Tsakonian
The current city was designed in 1837 by the Bavarian architect Birmach, who also designed Sparta and Karysto.[4] In 1845 it was designated the seat of the municipality of Voia and remained its seat until 1912, when the municipality was abolished, and it became the seat of the community of Neapolis. In 1994 it became the seat of the municipality of Neapolis Voion and in 1999 of the municipality of Voion.[5] Since 2011 it belongs to the municipality of Monemvasia, whose capital is Molaoi.
Neapoli has accommodation, dining areas and a long and narrow beach. In the central square of the coastal road is the statue of Vatikiotis Thalassinos, made of brass. The Holy Church of the Holy Trinity is visible from all over the city.
