Having built my first two drones, and losing and crashing them, I now firmly stand in the DJI camp, it may appear to be cheaper to build but it is a deep hole, you always chase after another upgrade. So DJI brings a lot of simplicity and resale value too.

Well learn how to fly at first. Real FPV drones are not for beginners like DJI drones. Still DIY do have option for GPS rescue and angle mode with ponch out :) for emergency.

I feel like this is the one that brings more people into FPV, I know the hardcore FPV community will hate on the Avata, but you gotta remember that this one lets people into the community and start appreciating FPV, not everyone can get into a build and figure out the LiPo charging and Tuning of a traditional FPV, DJI makes it easy, and honestly sometimes I believe the quality of content is pretty equal, may not fly the smoothest, but you can at least fly without losing the drone. Unlike your traditional FPV drone, LiPo's can burst, Signal lost behind a building, GPS rescue not being reliable, so I think price point and simplicity make it worth it. And this is coming from someone who has both the first DJI FPV and your Custom quads.

You are right about bringing more people into the basic FPV experience. Some of the FPV community will hate on this drone but, probably only as it doesn't bring anything new to the table for us. In my over 20 years of flying pretty much all rc disciplines, have NEVER had a lipo burst! . What is it with people thinking that FPV pilots don't plan there flights and do risk assessments too?! Never lost a quad either! As for content, if you are talking about RU-vid then you might want to actually look around at the many channels that bring very informative, UNBIASED information to the table. You know, the ones that don't get sent the product for free. I hope this product does bring more people into the fpv community as it will be more people to fight for the cause for just flying one! I will say one thing though, good luck with the goggles!! Probably best waiting for the second revision of them!

The Dji Avata looks like a great plug and play option to start with FPV without being too tech savy. And it's has beginner friendly features like GPS for return home and distance sensors, not to mention the great video quality you get out of it and the great goggles. Well done Dji. And great review, down to earth, not over hyped and great to see how it compares to a custom FPV option, keep up the great work

Great review as always. If I ever get a FPV drone it'll probably be the Avata. Thanks for breaking both the pros and cons up. The stabilization point you brought up was very valid. Also, oh snap! The breakup at 6:33 was quite scary but good to see the other drone did it in the same point by the tree. So good to know that transmission strength between the two seemed similar.

Great vid thanks! I would add in my favorite things on DJI fpv the PAUSE button than can get me out of messed up situation and the GPS (hover + return to home) if the signal is lost. These 2 things can make the flight more risky and aggressive since there is a “safety net”

Excellent comparative video, Mike. The one advantage that you forgot to mention regarding the coustum-built drone setup is the multi-aircraft use of the transmitter. I fly helicopters and competition aerobatic airplanes and can easily add a profile for a quad of various sizes. That being said, the smart features and the ease of use of the DJI Avata make a more compelling case. As a mechanical engineer and owner of an aerial drone photography, inspection and videography company, I would like to see DJI make the RC Pro controller compatible with all of their Occusync 3 and 3+ drones.

To each their own as always. Both have pros and cons at the end of the day. I think DJI Avata is a very remarkable fpv drone and you’ll have so much fun with it especially if you’re new to fpv and there's an option for the advanced.

I've exclusively flown anolog fpv. I just bought the Avata Pro View combo and the fpv controller 2. Now I can buy or build quads with the 03 air unit and use the dji fpv controller 2 instead of messing with ELRS.

I wonder that when you flew behind the trees you lost the signal but what would’ve been the diffirence if you flown at open air ? Dji didn't put the fpv controller 2 in an avata kit because they intended it to be flown with the motion controller. I bought it because that's what im used to, and it works with the 03 air unit.

Interesting range test in CE area. I think it’s the 1 thing that can’t be emphasized enough. CE vs FCC video transmission ranges. Feel very fortunate to live in FCC regulated area..and getting 10km vs 2km in CE area. I’ll def. be testing this myself in a few days. Great video Mike! 👍👍👍

These days I'm not sure if is more expensive with Dji. Just do a comparison how much do you pay for a full kit on a custom fpv (all parts, radio, goggles, camera, etc) vs dji fpv.

I bought the original DJI fpv combo new with the v2 googles two weeks ago and after discounts it came to $840 on Amazon. I bought the Avata quad only Friday night for $629. So for the price of the cinelog 35 setup I got the v2 goggles, the fpv controller 2, and the avata AND FPV quad for roughly the same price. DJI was FAR less expensive.

What people don't realise is that if you're building, you're still gonna go dji for video tx and goggles if you want the best. The drone might be cheaper to build, but the gps features and reliability of dji is yeeeears ahead of what opensource has.

The one thing I hate about the DJI FPV DRONE AND AVATA is they share the same small remote controller. If you could get something more full size to use with it would make a world of a difference. btw can you listen to audio from headphone while you fly?

Also, you can hand the motion controller to just about anybody who's never flown a drone, and they will be flying around in 5 minutes. Us traditional fpv guys are used to normal radios.

А question here that's bugging me.. When I fly with the Gopro I want my exposure to be locked and often times at -1 for keeping the sky not overexposed. In the meantime I want the air unit to constantly and quickly change exposure for when I fly from dark to light... like from under a tree or in a building. However on the Avata, since it is one camera, if you lock the camera exposure does this only apply on the recorded footage, or also on the live feed to the goggles?

Briefly Avata is a consumer drone, don't know if user will go for it (may be who can spend that money) but then the passion is it going to grow or die ? Most important are goggles 2 if no backward compatibility, dji is going to go back. 16:21 buy dji care. Its 129 dollars for 2 years, and only a 29 dollar deductible for a replacement. 212 dollars if it's a fly away. Or you lose the drone in water or something. You can buy replacement frames and prop guards. Idk about the gimbal.

DJI Avata is the perfect choice if you want the fpv experience but don’t have the luxury of time and prolly the skill for a traditonal fpv drone. And it saves more money too in my opinion.

Dji didn't include the controller probably because they didn't want people going straight into manual mode and crash . With the motion controller there's a lot less chance of crashing.

I used to tinker / build… i have a bunch of drones on the wall that need repair….😳. I appreciate the simplicity of DJI… it’s nowhere as 💪 or flexible… but it works very well as a system. I think the Avata will be way more crash worthy than the 1st FPV drone… but nowhere near as durable as carbon fiber setups….

Hobby FPV quads are for fun. DJI quads are for the boring stuff. They work well, but they can't take the beating that a good 3 or 5" freestyle quad can. If all you care about is cruising around and getting some pretty video, then DJI is definitely the way to go. But if you want to get into freestyle or racing, you will need to learn the hobby. It seems daunting at first, but if you are reasonably technically and mechanically inclined, it really isn't that hard. If you hate to learn and tinker, then don't even bother.

I disagree on the price of building your own FPV vs Avata as being cheaper. I’ve been building FPV drones for the past 10 years. And unless you already own your own radios, chargers and cameras. It’s actually more then the cost of an Avata. For instance the drone he compares it to: $450 for Geprc35 drone $600 Goggles $400 Gopro10 $40 per battery gets 5min Total: $1,480 without a controller. The controller he uses is around $200. Plus he has lots of upgrades, better RX, antennas, GoPro batteries, probably another $100+ DJI Avata $1,388 includes a motion controller. Is his a faster and more nimble drone? 100% but can he get it to stop and hover safely when he looses signal? Probably not.

When you keep saying "These and these" while showing footage it is confusing. You should say the model that you are talking about or you should put notices on the screen when you say "these".

35 hd whit lipos and all (gopro 10 ecc) is more exspensive than avata....for me the avata is the best cinewoop now for me.

I think that makes mind blowing is the DJI Goggle 2 not the drone it self if DJI able to give freedom to connect in any device to it would be big changer. I reach to my local store just for the DJI Goggle 2 and is out of stock already and now stuck with the DJI Avata Pro-View Combo. With flight time comparisons there should be dolar per minute price performance. If you want to fly more, and fly for example few batteries for half an hour. Price difference should be disclosed, because that is the only metric that prevents me from buying dji drones, beside that they cant be fixed by yoursef
