WanderWorx thanks, is there a free plug in that works with all or do i need to invest in a better color grading plug in like what you are using? i am using a 2009 imac and the thing drags while editing. trying to decide if i need to save for a new one or upgrade the ram for now.
I'd upgrade the Hard Drive to an SSD drive if you don't already have one in there. That makes a world of a difference in speed. Also RAM will help too. You can color grade with FCPX tools, they're not the best but they work. There's LUT plugins you can get that are super cheap or free. Just google it. Eventually you'll want to upgrade to a better editing plugin.
Hey nice little tutorial! I enjoy this kind of content. Would be interested to know a little more about your recommended capture settings/lensing etc once you get an ND. But good point about not shooting too flat. I always forget this is usually 4:2:0 8 bit we're dealing with here at best.
I'll put another video together once we get back from Thailand and have some ND in our hands. The 4:2:0 compression for 4k is pretty bad for color grading. But you can still get a nice image if you shoot less flat. I've had trouble grading log footage out of the DJI cameras in the past because its too flat for the compression.
Agreed! We are so stoked for the GH5. I've been shooting with the GH4 since they came out. Its by far one of the best and reliable cameras we've worked with.
Absolutely. And because I wasn't super hyped for the "vlog in 4k" train I held off, but I've been working my GH2 professionally since I pre-ordered it. The GH5 will be my first upgrade since the GH2 was announced.
Vloggin in 4k doesn't make sense to me right now. Seems overkill. Ive done a few in 4k and it really doesn't make that much of a difference. Might do some in the future, but shooting 1080 for vlogging and 4k for all the pretty footage works pretty well.
can this LUT be used in sony vegas and if not what would be the best LUT for mavic footage (for beach and tropical scenes, for my holiday soon)? thanks!
From Color Finale once you add the LUT layer there is a button in the bottom right hand corner that says CUBE Manager. From here you can add LUTs to your library.
Keep up the good work with your videos! Just subbed to you. I'm currently recording mavic footage and in need of something for colour grading, just wanted to know can you colour grade with just FCPX without the Color Finale plugin?
Thanks!!! You can use the color wheels in FCX the same way. Also there are other plugins that are cheap and even possibly free to be able to use luts in FCPX. Do a quick google search for plugins to add luts.
Very informative, helpful video. FCPX seems seems more user friendly than premiere pro. Do you use ND filters on your Mavic to get the correct shutterspeed to double the frame rate? I noticed you didn't sharpen (unsharp mask) in the video, but do you usually?
Thanks, I switched to FCPX a while ago and it was the best choice for editing. FCPX is much easier and quicker to use. I do not have any ND filters for my Mavic yet. None are available... As soon as Polar releases their ND filters I'll get them. Right now I'm just having to shoot with the lens thats on there. However, the Mavic performs much better than the P3 when it comes to high shutter speeds. I did not sharpen the image. Sometimes I do, but it tends to look way to sharp.
Love this video. Can you do a video on how to Basically to combine sony a7iii footage with drone footage? Using Hlg3 . if you can, Thank you. 1st comment.
Great informative video. Very humble down to earth man. First time on your channel. I subscribed. Looking forward for more similar videos. Keep up the good work my friend
Thank you so much for sharing your raw footage. I am one of the 1000's who got caught up in the shipment delays. It is nice to be able to practice on some actual magic footage so that when mine finally arrives I will have had some practice.
Thank You. I would use the Normal or D-Cinelike and add or remove contrast and saturation. I'll do another video and try to get the best results in camera with no post processing. Check back and I should have that one up with some sample footage to download in the next few days.
Terrific videos and thanks for the instructions so far. Is the FCPX a program for Apple computers. I'm new to the whole world of the Mavic and working on a major creative project using it. Your instructions on the color testing is great. Can you download the FCPX program? I'll Google it and hopefully find it. Cheers and happy travels and great footage. Wait to see what I'll be doing
Thank You. Yes FCPX is a apple program. It's $300. (which is not back for a professional editing suite) If you have more questions about editing in general feel free to reach out. There's always a learning curve with these softwares but once you get into it you'll love it!
.rar is a wrapper used to send files. A LUT will be a .cube file. You need to expand that with a .RAR expander such as rar-expander.macsoftware.com/free-download/?lp=bing
How do you get the luma graph on the left? Downloaded final cut, purchased the lut from your link, and set my mavic to art + 4k 30fps but i can't get the luma graph lol
for anyone thats interested you go to "window" - workspaces -> color and effects and from there you can use the top right button that says "view" an set it to luma
Yes. Color Finale is great! You can do different styles of grading and build on your grade in layers. Download the trial in my description and give it a go!
In your settings for shutter and exposure do you use Auto or Manual? By the way I love color finale, looks great for drone footage. I only use the P3S but all these rules still apply to any drone on the market. I'll be trying art tomorrow on a fall autumn shoot as Japan is looking amazing right now!
I'm just trying to stop my footage from going dark to bright on landscapes so that's my biggest beef. So about a month ago I started shooting in manual and found the footage much to edit. Just not sure if I should be playing with the shutter as much as I assume the camera can do that no problem. Thanks for the reply. Look forward to more videos and hey check out my stuff too as I love making drones vids with cool twists and ideas in Japan.
Since your having issues with the exposure changing then you need to for sure use Manual. What I would do is find the part of your shot that you want exposed properly and let the rest fall dark or bright. We're limited to the Dynamic range and compression of these cameras. So in situations like this I always just pick the one part that I want to look good and let the rest fall off. If you really wanted more control to color grade and preserve the darks & whites then you need to fly a camera that can shoot RAW.
Are you using Color Finale mainly for the LUTs? I'm curious why you do the color grading/contrast with Color Finale instead of with FCPX. I'm new to FCPX and never used any of the plug-ins.
No. This s a tutorial for a quick color grade on the Mavic footage. I use Color Finale because do more color grading depending on the shot and the project. Color Finale gives you way more control of your image and is a professional coloring suite that you add into FCPX. FCPX only gives you basic controls that will limit you as soon as you go beyond the 3 color wheels.
Good day, first off thanks for making these awesome tutorials as well as the trip videos... looking forward on watching more as i have been a subscriber.. anyhow i purchase the LUT thru the link that you have on the description, however I'm unable to add it to the LUT UTILITY, i tried adding it to the utility, and i could see it fro the download folder but I'm unable to click it to be added to the out utility. anything I'm missing ? once again thanks for these awesome tutorials..
MrPashee it's either sharp or mushy unfortunately. I use sharpness at +1 otherwise the footage looks bad. Not really a way to soften it up like a high end film camera.
I just downloaded the A7s Cine Lut. Now I can`t add it on final cut pro x. I think it is because of the rar file. How did you do this. Pleas help me :) nice greets from Austria
Hello am new to all of this, my mavic pro should be turning up next week was more of a impulse buy at first, however i have been watching all your videos and am getting really into it. Can you please advise me on what video editing software your using and also the color wheel you use. I have been on your drop box and taken them filers to play arounf with. thank you
I know someone asked similar qns, but I would like to know if I use ND filter, do I still use Dlog setting? Or does this matter help to enhanced the video further?
+Stanry Tan yes because ND is for something different than Dlog. ND brings down your shutter speed so you can get a more cinematic image. When you don't use Nd the image is very glittery because your shutter speed is too high
Great video, hope you get payed from Apple, DJI and colorfinale. I just got my self a Imac 27, final cut and color finale. Because the video from the Mavic was so flat, and you made it so much better in this video. So thanks for making me spend lot of $$$ 😜
WanderWorx Thanks WanderWorx. Now I am home for Christmas, and almost all of the city here is no fly zone and really bad weather is stopping the Mavic flying. The sun is also under the horizon all day, so only night/dark filming the rest of my stay here.
Nice video! I should have my Mavic in a couple weeks. Been waiting for 1 month so far. I need your help. Where exactly can I get that out from? I can't seem to find it on the links that you provided. Let me know when you have a chance. Thanks.
Thanks. Why have you got two layers in the timeline? Is it just so that you can play around with the top one for this video without affecting your original?
I use the key "Command" + "7" Also can access it through "view" in the upper right hand corner and "show scopes"

Great video! I always wondered how to copy the adjustments from one clip to another i FCPX? Is it possible? I usually make a compound clip and change it, but it seems hard.
It's very easy to copy effects from one clip to another in FCPX. Select a clip in your timeline that has effects and/or settings that you wish to copy and press Command-C. Then select the clip(s) you want to apply the effects and/or settings to in the timeline & press Command-Shift-V to "Paste Attributes". Then select which attributes from the copied clip that you want to add (paste) to the other clip(s).

WanderWorx Thanks for this, will try it immediately. 👍🏻
Thanks for the helpful tutorial, all the Mavic tutorials you've posted are great! Is it a requirement to use one of the more 'washed out' color modes like d-cinematic or Art to enable better color grading later? Is color grading possible when there is already decent color in the scene such as with Normal or Truecolor mode? Does any part of the process become more limited when you already have color information applied to the scene natively by Mavic?
Glad my tutorials help! The reason you use a flatter profile is to preserve the highlights and shadows. This allows you do do a color grad and add in a 'look' to your image. If youshoot in Normal or Turecolor you cant go the other direction and make the image flat before re-grading it. You need to start with the flat looking image to be able to edit the color.
The LUT? You need a .cube file. The rar needs to be expanded. Then in Color Finale there is a button to add LUTS when you go into the settings for LUTS
Hey, thanks for the upload, this is the kind of info we need to make a difference! I just got mine and discovered your channel...can't wait to get to playing with this !
Yes, scopes and LUT's. I was getting better and developing my own look until the 10.3 update killed that progress. I need to spend some time this weekend figuring out what I am missing.
10.3 was an interesting update. I'm getting use to it now. Buttons moved around... Any LUTS in particular you like? I'm always looking to play with new looks.
You'll be able to add LUTs in most professional softwares. However, you're most likely going to need a plugin to be able to add the LUT. Do a quick google search to see if your software will work with a LUT or there is a plugin available for your software to use LUTs.
Curious your setting changes now with DJI stripping a number of the various modes from the Mavic from the latest firmware chage? What settings are you using now? Thanks!
I haven't found new settings yet because I haven't updated my Mavic... Been traveling through Thailand and didn't want to update while flying here. I will create a new video soon with updated recommendations
What program are using? Is it FCP ? It looks different .What is Color finale? Is it a plugin? That is why it looks different? I have a lot of my own footage that I need to calibrate. Can I use FCP only or I need to buy a plugin? I am new at editing. Thanks for the tutorials...it always help.
