In this video I talk about the soft, smeary, footage that can show up you DJI Mavic Pro footage with certain settings. These shots were done with D-CineLike color profile +1, -1, 0. Firmware v01.03.0600
The conclusion is that the Mavic applies a very poor in-camera noise reduction to the shadows at sharpness settings below +1. I suggest leaving sharpness settings at +1 for all golden hour shooting. If shooting at noon with lots of trees, sharpening at 0 may be preferable because there will be very little shadows in the image, and this will avoid an over-sharpened look.

Hey, I’m not sure why but when I shoot in 4k and export on a 1080P TL my footage looks soft compared to the raw footage. My raw footage is nice is crisp but when I export the video in 1080p it’s soft but if I export at 4k its great. Why is that? Thanks

Oh and your 2.7k mavic footage looks great. Any reason to choose it over over 4k?
@shawn3d
@shawn3d 7 лет назад
The Film Poets thanks buddy. Well the reason is that the 2.7k is far more superior in quality. There is far less compression blocking and more detail than 4k even when it gets upscale do to 4k. I did the side by side comparison test on low contrast areas and the 4k lacked detail where the 2.7k you can actually see far more. Try it and you will see. Blows my mind. So essentially it's also an easier workflow to deal with the lower resolution. Then just use instant HD plugin to uprez the file to 4k if you want to. The results are far better my friend
@shawn3d

Gilad Langer thank you buddy, yeah been trying to tell people till I'm blue in the face about this. Where this misconception came in was when Phillip Bloom(who I highly respect) made a claim that -1sharpness was the way. From there it spread like wildfire. I believe It was a mistake from his part which can happen to the best of us. I have also chatted to him about this and we bounced some thoughts around it and eventually the conversation phased out. Again the internet is a place where misinformation can spread badly and it's important to look at things objectively 👌😎

I just wanted to thank this team for your finding. I swear every single person in RU-vid making videos about Mavic Pro settings, mentions this issue and how they use the +1 sharpness setting. Yet, most of them fail to credit you for that. It kind of annoys me, but hey, thank you! we know it was you (or so I think)

Thank you for spending the time to figure this out. This has been a huge issue since day one and really frustrating. I even personally spoke with Michael Perry from DJI and he assured me that it should be as good as the phantom 4 sensor was. Still had issues. Glad to see such a difference on your shots

Thanks for taking time with this. I never had as many issues dialing in my settings on my p3, p4, Inspire as I have had with the Mavic. Everywhere you go people are taking about the sharpening value and you get a range of -3 to well +1 in this case. Your tests clearly show that from -1, 0 to +1 have drastic changes. Thanks for sharing and Ill test +1 here soon..

I currently operate the Inspire 1 Pro (w/ X5) and Phantom 4 Pro. One of the main reasons I've have stayed away from the Mavic is the small sensor, but it does look like you can get some good footage - especially with the info that you have provided here. so this is the reason mavic pro has soft footage even in infinity focus. they need to do a software update and give us the option to turn off in camera noise reduction so we can record at 0 sharpness without it.
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
The mavic's infinity focus is soft because it's not really infinity focus. I think it's going past infinity. Just tap a spot about 2/3 into the scene and you'll be fine. This sensor is so small you're not going to get shallow DOF unless at macro focus.
@Floyd005
@Floyd005 7 лет назад
agreed, my GoPro 5 has no focusing issues because it is locked to infinity, the Phantoms are also locked to infinity with no issues. Drones do not carry telephoto or Zoom lens, no reason to have this focusing system on it.

I've read / watched so many attempts at tackling this problem. I thought It was simply a compression issue with the MP4 codec making mush of low detail shadows. One solution I was given was to flick between pal and ntsc before every flight. I'll be trying this +1 idea out tomorrow morning - thanks

Finally, finally, someone with some quality to back it up. I've followed your work for a long time, truly exquisite work you people do. When I first saw your videos I thought man, what gear do these people use? At the time, a P3 and a 6D. I use your work, as a benchmark (more than just filming of course, there's a lot of work BTS) to show my customers what you can do with a 6D because of the astounding quality and the final product you create. So happy for this video to have come out too. I often thought it was D-Log that made the contrasty shadow areas look so so so bad, but of course I was following the '-1/-2 sharpness' trend. Seems both are the culprit. Do you mind what profile/sharpness/saturation/etc you work with? I'm also very keen on the 2.7K vs 4K comparison video. Thanks!!
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
Such a kind comment Colton. Thank you. I like +1, -1, 0 with D-Cinelike, but D-log is nice for adding an extra stop of DR. After doing more tests, I've released just how noisy the Mavic's sensor is. The flicker that you will see with +1 sharpening is actually a pulsating noise that, not an over sharpening effect. Neat Video is a must to remove this. Cheap NR plugins just aren't enough, although I originally thought they would be. I hope to demonstrate these tests and fixes with another video soon. Thanks again.

The Film Poets I gave the profile a test, with just the demo version of Neat Video. Even though it's a small sample (720p or 1080p I forget for the resolution affected) of the 4K I'll be doing, I didn't notice anything drastic. Right now in Alberta our trees are leafless and when filming there's often that 'over sharpened look'. I applied the profile, but perhaps I missed something. I saw a very [very] slight reduction, but not enough to remotely remove that 'over-sharpened look'. Am I missing a step? Thanks!
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
There's actually a setting inside of Neat Video called "Edge Smoothing". You can crank that up to really knock off the edge if you like.I've found that it works well in 4k mode but isn't needed for 2.7k. Also, Neat Video removes the flicker that comes from the noise pulsing every 7 frames.

@h2videokanaal

Part of the problem is this: the camera records video in a limited color range: 8 bit color means 255 levels - but limited color range means only 16 - 235 colors are recorded. Although you can record under exposed the main problem will be in the low light area's. Although you might be able to restore some of it with neat - basically the camera recording is putting all colors 0-16 in one color and that looks like unsharp. DJI should provide a full 8 bit color range 0 - 255 in order to do a good job in post and make neat even work better. besides that: there is a substantial difference in the different profiles (d-log - d-cine none art) but they all record to limited.

Hello again, I would like to add some info to the great video / description you have shared. The point is that reducing Sharpness is not the culprit of soft images in Mavic. It is low shutter speed. When shooting during night scenes, sunset, sunrise or even using an ND filter, shutter speed is forced to decrease. This fact makes mavic think "night is coming so let's activate our awful noise reduction". Fortunately, manually setting Sharpness to +1 avoids that bad decision. Anyway, believe me, you can film videos under good light conditions, with high shutter speed (1/500 s for instance or higher) and sharpening set to - 1, and your footage will look sharp and great. You should give it a try.
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
Thanks for the input, but I disagree. Shutter speed effects the image only when there is motion in the frame. These tests were done locked off with the drone not moving at all. To add to that, they were shot at a high shutter. The in camera noise reduction kicks into the shadows regardless of shutter speed and that's whats doing the damage that most see.
@thunderdome1982
@thunderdome1982 7 лет назад
The thing is that I started having this soft image issue since I use nd filters (always shooting with - 1), never before. However, I completely rely on your experience and will consider it was just good luck. Thank you for the answer and keep on with these great videos.

A few others have mentioned that this seemed to have popped up on recent firmware updates. I'm not sure but that may be the reason.
@viperspd2
@viperspd2 7 лет назад
LIke others, I followed the "pros" on youtube who recommended reducing sharpening to -2 or -3 in order to "reduce in camera artificial sharpening" for a more natural image sensor picture. I was surprised when my footage had strange softness in several areas of the depth of field focal plane versus my first flight with default settings. Then I saw BlueHouseFX's video and cranked UP the sharpness a tick to +1 and the footage looked ridiculously sharp, albeit a bit noisy with some subtle light flickering, which may be due more to video compression during capture, color profile, or light hitting the spinning blades; flickering shouldn't be due to exposure setting because i have set this and white balance to manual. I'll happily take the more noise over the random smears of artificial vaseline over parts of the image.
@DanSLewin
@DanSLewin 7 лет назад
I've been running a -1 sharpness because that's what a lot of people were recommending, but I noticed this issue mostly with tree shots. I thought it was because of the high compression of the 4K footage, but maybe this will fix it. Thanks for the info!

Thank you so much. You're right, DJI botched this one. Hoping to see some good firmware updates with community input in the future. Also, did your smile pop off your face when you got that closing bird shot? :D

Yes I hope they do a firmware fix! - And yea when that bird flew past I knew I had the thumbnail/closing shot.

Great work Matt, I love your channel. I read that you are working on a "next steps to post process after shooting at +1 sharp, and compare 2.7k and 4k" vid. I hopeful that you would incorporate how to use Neat Video plugin and your profile as a part of that workflow session. I'm interested in purchasing your profile and Neat Video but want to make sure I'm using the everything correctly to get the expected result. Any update on when the next video is dropping :-) 😜

Dude, your production is so nicely crafted. I can't tell you how impressed I am. That said, Neat Video is rather pricey for me, do you know if there is similar plugin or noise reduction ability in Blender?
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
I have two other recommendations in the description. Not sure about Blender though.
@DroneAdventuresEarthview
@DroneAdventuresEarthview 7 лет назад
Do you have any thoughts on output settings? codec and containers? Data Rate? Blender has a Bitrate setting then a minimum and maximum data rate. I have no idea about the buffer settings and packet size. I know you don't use Blender, but perhaps you have some thoughts on what is the best output codec and such. Thanks.

I want to help, but thats so far beyond the scope of YT comment I just cant. Also this is all google-able if you look for suggested upload settings for youtube. Hope that helps.
@DroneAdventuresEarthview
@DroneAdventuresEarthview 7 лет назад
Heh, I used the suggested YT export settings...terrible. I could see it best on the back of my pitbull whose coloring is somewhat golden. You could see the pixelation clearly with the standard settings, but when I used H.264 container and a DIVX codec it cleared that right up. I feel like I have it right but was hoping you had some insight as it related to noise issue you broached here.

I'm guessing it all depends on which firmware version and which app you use. IIRC d-log was terrible in an older firmware, but better in the latest one. I'm still using an old firmware and the DJI Go app (not the Go4) and I don't see the sharpening issue, but will of course need to test it now.
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
I'd be curious to know. I've heard others mention that the sharpening settings seemed to have changed at some point in a March firmware update.

you're right! this has been talked about in the Facebook forum I'm currently following! Thanks for this! after the last 2 firmware update or when then introduced the new improved D-Log, I've started doing +1 on sharpening. I think your noise profile are expensive! are they hard to do?
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 лет назад
Well, considering I spent about 10 days wrestling with this issue, a day making this video, plus another hour creating the profiles, I don't think $8 is too much, and neither do all of the folks who have bought it (thanks guys!) But yes you can make your own profile using neat videos charts on their website.

I'm gonna test this out with my Phantom 3 Standard. Every thread I've read recommends -1, -1, -1, flat color profile. But I find too much noise in the simplest of things. I know the P3S is only 2.5K but still, I downsample to 1080p in post.

Man I need to do a course in cinematography! So reducing the sharpness setting increases noise reduction? I guess that makes sense when I think about it. Mine's on -1, I'll change it to +1. Thanks.

Last week I changed all my settings hoping to have more control over the image and it wasn't until yesterday that I flew the drone. Seeing how incredibly soft the image was at 4K, was like being thrown a bucket of cold water over my head. Such a disappointment. I'm going to change the setting right now and see how much of a difference this makes for me.
@thesoulkeeper31
@thesoulkeeper31 6 лет назад
I just tested changing the sharpness to +1 and the difference is day and night. So unfortunate DJI has this problem.
