How does the footage from my sub £900 DJI Mini 3 Pro compare to my £12,000 DJI Inspire 2 setup? In this video I compare footage shot with the DJI Mini 3 Pro and my DJI Inspire 2. The Inspire 2 is a way more capable drone and does produce higher quality results but how close does the Mini 3 Pro get?

Really enjoyed the video; definitely do more like this. What is so astonishing to me is how reasonably close the Mini 3 Pro can get to the Inspire 2 in terms of overall quality. An argument could easily be made that it is TWICE as good, but 12x as good?

Thanks for letting me know, I’ll certainly be doing more drone videos moving forward. Yes it’s amazing how fast the tech with these little drones is moving!

Thank you very much Paul this was very useful for me as a novice to the drone world I’m looking to invest in a mini 3. I did play with the idea of getting the Mavic 3 but the price deterred me from this. Knowing that the Mini 3 Pro has good quality footage against the Inspire, although not as good, was what I needed to hear to make my purchasing decision, you never know where it might lead from there. Awesome 👍

Great video. Note: Prores Raw tops out at 12 bit linear. Sony and Red do the same marketing thing where they say ‘14 or 16 bit’ but that’s the bit depth from the sensor, not in the final file. Kind of devious haha.

Great video. Would you say the Mini 3 Pro footage is broadcast standard? I'm thinking the small size is super user friendly and a great bit of kit to have in the car but tempted to wait until a drone of this size offers 4:2:2 and maybe even proper Log before investing.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
It can certainly produce nice looking footage and I’m sure it would edit in just fine but I wouldn’t personally use it when hired for a broadcast project due to codec limitations and lack of a higher bitrate option.

@@PaulJoy Agreed. Good to have that confirmed. I’ll wait to see what the next model has to offer.

Sharpness and dynamic range is the biggest killer of cheaper drones, and I don't know why DJI keeps forcing the user to have oversharpened shots in any consumer drone they release.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
I totally agree although I find the Mini 3 to be okay in that regard in D-Cinelike. It’s nowhere near as sharpened as the Phantom 4 Pro for example. I guess most users expect a finished image straight from the drone so and highly sharpened images seem like a positive to most consumers.
@MarkusFinholt
@MarkusFinholt Год назад
@@PaulJoy It wouldn't be a problem if you were able to turn the sharpening down. But you can't, since DJI treats it's customers like toddlers.

with the mini 3, what mm do you prefer on a sunny day like in the vid mate? i've noticed i have to trial and error the exposure in different lighting environments to reduce the heavy noise in the dark parts.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
Sorry not sure what you mean by mm? Metering? I tend to use the histogram mostly and zebras to control exposure. In terms of noise I just set the lowest ISO and then ND so that nothing is clipping with as close to 180° shutter as possible. From there if I need to increase shutter a stop or so I'm fine with that but once it starts getting higher than 200 I'll fit a stronger ND.
@denaco
@denaco Год назад
@@PaulJoy i get ya. sorry i mean the meter bellow shutter speed that shows exposure like -0.3, 0.0, +0.3 etc. just wondered if you like to have it as close to 0.0 on all conditions during the day?
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
@@denaco No worries, yes that makes sense. I do keep an eye on it but I don't worry too much about the reading as it really depends on the scene. As I say I'll tend to be watching the histogram and monitor over exposure with zebras and then glance at the meter after that. A shot with sky and ground might require a decision to either let the sky clip a little or plan to bring up the ground in post and I'll generally make that call depending on how dark the ground looks. As you say there are limits before noise starts to become a factor. Generally I'll ignore the meter if I'm happy with how it looks and know I'm not losing highlights or shadows.

@@PaulJoy thanks buddy, good tips. with the mini 3 i do get lots of noise in sunset and low light gloomy days which is very hard to remove in davinci and not get the blur, on trees especially. i can improve it though if i mess with the exposure meter and let the shutter change with it on auto with the new update, but not let it get too high like you say. my mavic 3 classic is actually due to arrive today and i'm really not sure if i'm going to return it with the c1 being scrapped. even sold my air 2s cheap a few weeks ago but looks like i should have just kept it now. need a drone that performs in sunsets and dark very well so no idea what to do. could keep the mavic classic as i have the article 16 but not the a2 cofc so might have to do that course. but 50 meters is still quite far tbh and people that do paid work like wedding events are going struggle with that distance so many will just break the rules anyway i reckon.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
@@denaco Yes, I think thats just part of the limitation when working with such a small sensor. Don't get me started on the way the CAA have done that with C labels, it's unfortunately more of the same from them! They seem to change direction on things constantly with no regard for people that might be making business purchasing and planning decisions based on regulation. I think the A2CofC is worth it as at least you can operate a better sensor in built up areas and I've been operating commercially under the 50m from people restriction for many years so it is possible. I get that for weddings etc it's not practical though so for now the Mini 3 Pro remains the best choice I'd say.

@PaulJoy

It will definitely depend on the conditions for sure. This is actually a hard test for the codec as it’s shooting towards the sun and with lots of detail to capture in the grass / trees. As I say in the video the Mini 3 Pro gets amazing results for its cost and size and it’s ability to be flown in places the Inspire 2 can’t for either legal or space reasons definitely gives it advantages. Image quality wise though it simply doesn’t have the hardware or processing power to outshine the Inspire 2 however as you rightly say, the price for each setup is wildly different! Thanks loads for the feedback and the sub :)
