Definitely disagree with those saying you’re speaking too fast!! I cannot stand videos that are overly long due to turtle talking, gimmicks and anything else that I’m not here for. If I miss something, I simply double tap backwards and listen again. Even more of an added plus that you’ve included time stamps! Great video
Apple Watch app isn’t a bad idea actually. And also the original Mavic air had gesture controls that were quite broken but indeed it allowed you to fly without even pulling out a controller.
Two options while on bike. 1. Buy one of the remote screen shades that protect remote when closed and shade screen when open. Just shut cover and put in backpack. Or 2. Unscrew the joysticks from remote and let screen go to sleep. I haven’t confirmed it’ll “sleep” in active track but I’ve let it hover long enough to where screen turned off. Have to press power button and it comes back on immediately. Seems like I had the Fly app on phone also, just can’t recall if it was with mini 4 pro, or another one of of several DJI drones.
Nice video and input, I was using active track the other day and I set the controller down on a bench and rode away on my bike and the drone tracked me. You don’t need the controller in your hands .
Great video, you demonstrated quite a few scenarios. Another feature idea that might help is if there was a return to controller option in addition to RTH. What do think of that? Probably easier than software dev for a smartwatch...
Awesome video brotha. I want say I fully agree with the smart watch or some sort of wrist option for active track. This has always been a complaint for me when it comes to smart watches! For them to be so called "Smart Watches" they are entirely too limited. Almost feels like manufacturers have gate kept them or never focused enough on their functionality. The fact I can't even look at my snap messages or use commands through speech, amaze me. Currently using the Samsung Galaxy watch 4 and even still it's no where near impressive. Anyways awesome video! Wanted to share my thoughts on this matter.
First off Active Track is available on DJI Mini 3 Pro. The improvements you are recommending that DJI incorporate is fine & all possible but DJI improves their drones slowly & progressively & tailored to different budgets! Not to forget...every new improvement comes with a higher price ticket. Don't get ahead of yourself!
The parallel mode is actually distinctly different from the 360 mode where the drone is following you from the side. Parallel mode should be called heading or direction mode. In parallel, the drone will keep the camera fixed in a direction you set, north for example, and will keep you in the frame as you move all while staying pointing north. Parallel works great to keep a fixed background or lighting direction. In 360 mode, the drone will stay at your side and as you move the drone will change direction dynamically in order to stay at your side. In this case the background and lighting will fluctuate as the drone changes direction.
I believe active track is going off of the position of the controller whatever way the controller is facing.forward with the controller would be the front.
I just got my advanced drone pilot certification and learned that in Canada we are not allowed to operate a drone and drive a vehicle at the same time for obvious reasons; I’m surprised you do that and admit it!
I'll bet you're right about it recognizing a person with two arms and legs and when you're riding sideways going forward it wants to get behind you so it can see two arms and legs. You could probably test that by having it track you going the other direction and see if it went to the left again.
@DJI should come out with a skydio like beacon and call it something catchy...and have the M3 Series, Air 3/Mini4Pro and future models track the GPS of the DJI Active RC....i think that would be cool
I have a problem with my mini pro 4 when trying to set active track. In the 'control' menu, when I switch on 'subject scanning' the "FocusTrack Settings" which is supposed to be underneath does not appear at all on the screen. Therefore I cannot access the inner and outer circles to set parameters as they do not appear on the screen. When I go back to the main screen I see 3 icons: activetrack, spotllight and POI. When I press 'go' on activetrack there is only a single circle with front, back, etc directions but no outer circle.. Other 2 functions 'spotllight and POI work fine. Any ideas?
Hey man, appreciate your help - I want to use this drone to record my playing guitar so I will have my hands full - planning to make music videos - is it possible to have this thing follow - track me while I’m walking and not have to hold the remote control?
I tried this on my boat and I think it gave me a message saying something about it only works on people. There was alot going on since I was also driving the boat so I'm not sure. Do you know of this ?
Great information on the active track Billy. And I do agree it would be nice to have some kind of small device to use when using active track with your drones, just like you said with a watch or with some kind of small device you can put in your pocket and that would be even greater if you could just speak the command to it. Good pitch to DJI. I hope they are watching this.
That’s the *MAIN REASON* why I’m holding off on upgrading my mini 2 to the mini 4. I like the thought of the active track feature and 360 sensors, but I need an active track that will active track without my input. I always have my Ultra⌚ on me, so an upgraded active track would sell me instantly.
for me, it would be much better if DJI can also have the same tech of Skydio 2's active tracking and obstacle avoidance with the beacon...if not, I hope skydio will continue distribution of their consumer drones...hopefully with the skydio 3 that has foldable propeller arms...
Nice tutorial, I haven't got a chance to try to feature out yet, but I hope to do so soon. I understand your issues with holding the controller, it your tracking yourself. And I love your suggestion of an Apple Watch app. Great video, and thanks for sharing Billy.
The active tracking getting lost in the trees is odd considering how aware it is when you were walking around earlier in the video. I’ve seen some examples where it gets lost and flies up or keeps going when in my mind, ideally it should go back to where it lost you.
I TOTALLY agree with you! The drone should track the RC, or another small device carried by the pilot, NOT the pilot shape!! See for example the Skydio "bacon" device..we need something similar on our mini...IMHO
Hi. Great Video. Just a query. If 2 of us are riding 2 different motorcycles and I have the controller in my tank bag, can I use the track control for my fellow rider who will be on other motorcycle? That means, the drone will follow the subject without the controller in the hand or tank bag of the subject’s motorcycle. Thanks.
I have pretty much the same question, will active track only work with whoever has the remote with them. I watched the video twice and I think he said something to that effect, (he talks a bit too fast lol!) Said something about selecting by drawing a box around whoever or whatever you want to track.
DJI needs to either allow the drone to track the controller like a GPS beacon or make a stand-alone beacon controller similar to what the Skydio drones have. Visual tracking alone is not enough to track fast moving subjects or subjects that go out of view behind trees or other obstacles.
I really need a drone that can follow me always from the front (i have an amusement park tour channel). Is the DJI Mini 3 Pro or the Neo capable of following the subject from the front? tysm!
When in active track and you set elevation to follow and I change elevation will the drone change elevation to maintain the elev I set for it to follow?
Is there any way to set a random varying active track? I'd like to be able to set it to follow my motorcycle from varying angles (again randomly). Like you mentioned with your bike, holding the controller is not really an option. there are bar mounts for motorcycles, but I do not want the controller exposed on my MC. I would just like to be able to set it to follow and circle around me randomly without input from me (would typically be in a slow moving desert or mountain environment without obstacles, or at least very few). Also, I assume the home location follows where ever the controller is? Not the launch site (want home to be wherever I am). It looked like the "H" was off in the distance in some of the shots as you were moving around. Maybe dumb questions but I Just picked up my Mini 4 pro a couple days ago... going to do my first (regular standing, nothing fancy) test flight today :).
I agree with Billy's observation that Mini 4 Pro needs to have a smaller input device or bring back the old hand gesture control, or like you said integrate with the Apple watch etc. to control its Active Track 360. Active Track is an excellent system but having to carry the remote to use it is just too cumbersome to many. This is where HoverAir X1 with its simplicity of use to track its subject will take a HUGE chunk of potential buyers away from Mini 4 - say the average teenagers and adults who just want to take moving selfies - the non-dron hobbiests. Looke out DJI !! Please get going !!
How do I set my mini 4 pro to hold a position that I set but then follow me with the camera? I'm going to document falling a large tree that died in a fire. I want the drone to hold a position about 40 feet up, off to the side. I want it to keep the camera on me while I fall the tree and then as I walk down the length of the tree limbing it.
Can you set remote down and it still track you? I surf and use go pros but looking at getting a drone possibly if I can say fly it up set the tracking and it follows
Another Great video Billy. I don’t think u hv done this yet?? but could you do a video on Mini 4 Pro Precision Landing, not only demoing it, but explaining the tech, such as the role of the gps, the camera, the sensors etc. Thks Bruce
What happens if signal get lost to RC ? it happened today to me by activating activetrack to some dears and directly I lost signal to drone and drone disappeared never found it and it didn't came back to RTH
The newly introduced active track system seems to be not fully baked. I don't really know if this is a new algorithm, or the new OA sensors array, or maybe both. But overall, in the real world scenarios, it seems that the Air 3 tracking is noticeably superior to that of the Mini 4 Pro.
I've already seen countless videos in which it gets lost where the mini 3 pro never would have. It's true it wasn't trying to do as many things at once, but that video where it just flew into the trees for no reason is a huge concern, as the 360 OA isn't infallible.
@@billykyle I wonder if DJI upload the ActiveTrack logs to their cloud, together with the flight logs, to analyze that data with their ML models, which in turn may introduce enhanced performances with future firmware updates.
I still think the Mini 4 Pro algorithm doesn't work 100% when it's tracking a human on a vehicle that moves quicker than a human normally moves. DJI just needs it to track a subject and not be concerned whether it's human or not.
Ignore this guy. Your video was great, dude. Thank you. Right in to the details, which most of us need when we’re trying to figure it out & our drone is steadily draining the battery while it waits on us to figure it out lol
Lol he still does this… used to follow him a lot back in 2018 or so and he was FAST… that’s why I moved on to other people… I don’t understand why he does this in his videos.
there is no step by step guide - how to activate what mode to fly in normal mode cine mode sport mode etc and yeah i slowed the video way down and it was still tooo fast and to convoluted mess.
It really sucks that Skydio is the only drone out there that can track you using your phone only yet the company no longer makes drones anymore for consumers.
