A 4K comparison walking video between the original DJI Osmo Pocket and the DJI Pocket 2. I recorded this in downtown Toronto and demonstrate how these cameras perform outdoors, indoors, in natural fall colours, a subway station and at night. This is not a review however I am convinced that the Pocket 2 is the better camera. All settings were set to auto (ISO, White Balance, Normal colour etc) and wind muffs were used. I recorded this on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

For indoors, I actually prefer the Pocket 1, as you mentioned, the lighting seems a bit softer. Definitely, for outdoor use, I prefer the Pocket 2. Aside from that, great investment on the Pocket 2! 👍👍👍

I agree! The colour saturation of pocket 1 is far superior but I guess it’s down to personal choice.

The narrower lens of the Pocket 1 has much less distortion, colors are good, exposure too, there are adjustments you can make after, as for the POV, just a few steps back will give you the same without the distortion.

Nice vid. This is a good way to compare two versions of a product without really doing a bunch of editing or monologues. I hav both the original Pocket and the Pocket 2 and I agree with the quality jump. Way to go!

I bought the Pocket 1 because of the price drop and it’s still good in 2021. I’m just gonna use this at normal videos and I don’t usually go out so maybe I’ll upgrade when Pocket 3 is better.

Loved watching your video and reading the comments. I always use tilt lock but I'm impressed by the way you were able to look at tall buildings. I also have the do it all handle but maybe I should ditch it for walking around. It really does cut down battery life. As you know by now, DJI replaces batteries for a reasonable price.

I am so glad I returned the pocket 1 as I found it was not what I thought it would be, dark images and no zoom function. Pocket 2 looks better and ActionKid did a video demo on Pocket 2 and there is a Zoom function. You have also demonstrated here and I will definitely get the Pocket 2 now! I will have to go to Vistek on Queen St E and see Donovan for the Pocket 2! Thanks for demo, it was helpful!

The auto-exposure on the Pocket 1 is frustrating as it does often leave things looking too dark. The Pocket 2 seems to rectify that!

Thanks for comparing. I used to have OP1 and sold it, but then OP2 is kind of disappointment to me as it does not have the way to use external power and mic together (like Osmo Action mic adapter) and its price is pretty steep. Also, considering the price drop on OP1, I might get OP1 again.

Good timing! I've had a DJI Pocket 2 in my Amazon cart for a few days now because I want something that is better at low light than my GoPro Hero 7 Black. I have a Hero 7 Black as well. It definitely falls short in low light performance. The Pockets are a bit noisy (to be expected for a small sensor) but utterly superior in those environments IMO :) Thanks!

I loved my pocket 1 but the mic placement killed it for me. The pocket 2 is a great uprage. I just wish the Pocket 2 had the FOV of the Pocket 1, as its more camera like, and less fisheye or action camera like, if you know what I mean.

Yes, if it's audio artifacting that you suspect with the subtle high-pitch background noise, I hope DJI takes note of this and addresses it in a firmware update because it's also prevalent in my Osmo Action, as well.

Both of them seems to have equal awesome quality video captures, I guess the great advantage of the Pocket 2 is its Low-light capability due to the bigger sensor, I barely take video on a low-light condition anyway. But for the Wide-angle lens, you can easily replicate it by adding a "FreeWell Wide-angle lens" to your pocket 1 and you'll get the same wide-angle perspective as with the Pocket 2, perhaps I will just wait for the Pocket 3.

Thanks.....Pocket 1 still good with FOV as for photography sometime get more wild angle doesn’t mean to suit your preference....I got go pro to work with wild angle and pocket 1 for documentary

Thank you for the review, I have a pocket 1 for a few years now. It works for doing informal views with family members and friends I found many times that the firmware takes a bit of time to upload and at times a bit wonky.

It looks like the pocket 2 autoexposure is a bit darker and the colors are slightly warmer. In terms of image quality they both seem quite comparable. I am amazed at how little vertical movement you are able to get while walking, that's serious skills!

I agree, I do prefer the Pocket 2 outdoors but indoors I think the 1 is a bit better. I guess I was inadvertently walking a bit more carefully since I was holding two cameras which reduced the vertical bob lol

Thanks for the comparison walk. Pocket 2 fer sure is brighter in low light but not a game changer though. I noticed a Halo in the center during the night. It looks like some artificial light booster done by pocket 2 in low light. This Halo is not noticeable with pocket 1.

I think the wider FOV of the pocket 2 will benefit showing more in denser areas, and also wider vistas.

I too have both Pockets and love them. The newer Pocket 2 has a number of add-ons that makes it so much better. I'm using the older controller wheel with my Pocket 2 as I prefer the finer control that the older wheel offers. Also with the new case I'm able to leave the control wheel on when its in the case - something not possible with the OP with the control wheel module. The Do-It-All handle is a stroke of genius on the part of the DJI engineers. Wished that they were able to fit in another battery to extend combined battery capacity.

GoogleCensorsTheTruth 34 , the older Control Wheel that came out with the Osmo Pocket is compatible with the newer Pocket2 as it attaches in the same way. All the buttons work, and you are right in that we have to memorize what they do as they are not labeled. Realistically, I don’t see how that can be done. The Do-It-All handle is an attachment that replaces the bottom portion of the Pocket2. It has the WiFi module built in as well as the Wireless Mic’s receiver, tripod socket, speaker and mic/headphone jack. It’s 5cm long

Thanks for this comperision, but interestingly this made me confuse more about which one is better lol I hate when a brand has brought a new product and it has not clearly better than old products, because I wanna ask why? If it is not completly better than previous models in every way, or not just same in worse possibility, than why did they product a new one unnecessarily? I see there are advantages and disadvantages for both, but none of them have fully advantages in all comperisions, I could be still okay if they were in same levels apart from several details, but nope, sometime 1 is better, sometime 2 is better, as result, there is no winner with my opinion, so, I guess I won’t buy any of these to avoid disappointment after that, when I thought other one’s advantages it will surely make me feel bad! Another reason is waterprofing, it can’t be so difficult, mostly products adds such feature these times arounds, even my wireless headphone (Sony) is fully waterprof, I took a shower with it and I regularly clean it with full of waters sometime lol, zero problem for years, so I am not sure about I can protect such usable camera toys from waters always, especially if it will be used in the outside generally. I think I am gonna keep check new phones and simple gimbals, although they have higher prices, at least they will have more features with my opinion.

I like both cameras but for a choice I would pick the Osmo Pocket 2. 👍👍👍👍👍👍. I was looking at it on Amazon but I'm not doing any ordering from them till they stop using Lasership to deliver my packages , Too many of my packages have gone MIA with this delivery service. This was also a great video to compare the cameras. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Pocket 2 allows easier framing of buildings when walking by the street - in some scene skyscrapers were framed completely using Pocket 2, Pocket 1 shows them only partially. To say the least, many objects filmed by Pocket 2 weren't filmed by Pocket 1 since were out of frame. Stabilization on Pocket 2 looks more efficient since focal length (1-degree shake / 62 degrees vertical FOV of 20mm = 1.5% image shake; 1-degree shake / 50 degrees vertical FOV of 26mm = 2% image shake; 1.33 times difference). Color rendering on Pocket 1 (with automatic white balance, i guess) looks warmer (especially pronounced at 37:35 and 38:35) which is better for filming people. With Pocket 2 they'll look pale so make sure to film using Log-profile to add warmth to colors in post (with DJI's D-Cinelike you can fix colors in post so no big deal). Colder rendering of Pocket 2 makes streets and sky look better - more natural and saturated (see 16:45, Pocket 1 renders sky in warm-green pale color). Dynamic range is higher for Pocket 2 - it means that camera captures both dark and light parts of the street evenly (27:55, 31:55). Better low-light performance of Pocket 2 (39:01). Overall, Pocket 2 is much more focused on filming streets (FOV, low-light performance, dynamic range, color rendering, stabilization) and performs that noticeably better, good balance between Pocket 1 (26mm) and GoPro (16mm) FOV.

34:55 man the 2 focused so fast! not sure if you mean to do that , but nice display of that. I'm personally finding the pocket 1 white balancing much better then the 2, alot of the shots around 12:00 seem too blue on the pocket 2, though the ISO balancing is better. Can you set the white balance on the 2? At least then you have more control over it. Also thank you so much for the extra long tests, it really helps to hear/see the continuous changes rather then replaying a single bit to try and get a feel for it.

Yeah, the 2 pushes blue (really noticeable on grey sidewalks). You can tinker with the white balance but I leave it on auto. Cheers,

was last in Toronto 1970. I remember how orderly well laid out easy to find anywhere it was. thanks for the walk down memory lane. Ah, the comparison. 2 definately better at night, white balances on each soooo different (e.g. inside train), and 2 seems more like go Pro 9 focal 20mm, while Osmo 1 i guess 24 and more to my liking since less side distortion. And yes 2 has much more color saturation, not as bright as 1 , aperature diff, but again more go Pro type colors. I dunno man. Seems i'd like something inbetween. thanks for the efforts.

I'm wondering if the "stereo" mode on the 2 is good enough to record stereo audio. is it like a "matrix" IA stereo or a real, TWO channel stereo, each microphone getting each side...or digitally separated. rsvp

Great comparison man, Im looking to get either of these to ramp up my content, i would say ill go with the pocket 2, i just usually export at 1080 then cropping some wouldnt hurt i guess, and that focus speed and depth of field and low light on pocket 2 is just amazing

Good to know the autoexposure issues are gone. I hated how a lot of my footage was too dark on the Pocket 1. I like the GoPro colors but I prefer the Pocket because its more discrete and I don't even have to try to keep it level

I’ve been seriously doubting the stabilization of Pocket 2 because it felt bouncier than Osmo Pocket. Thought my unit is defect but seeing your video I guess the wider FOV exaggerate the bouncy movement on the edge of the image. I also hate how the Pocket 2’s camera movement feels much faster than Osmo Pocket. But it is also due to the FOV change. Thanks for the great comparison video!

I have found their stabilization is about the same. The wider angle probably does exaggerate that effect to a degree. I actually prefer the follow (slow) mode on the P2. With either camera any sudden movements are far too quick and jarring so it takes some time to get the hang of.

Wide angle definitely looks more stable due to wider perspective point of view. That's standard issue. It's the same when using DSLR with a wide angle lens vs telephoto lens. Telephoto would need an image stabiliser with faster shutter speed. PKT 2 seems to have better colour balance as well.

The stabilization and object tracking of the gimbal on Pocket 1 is waaay better than pocket 2. It is enough for me to overlook the lower dynamic range and auto iso issues

Pocket 1 looks and feels more natural in terms of geometry (especially when turning) and colors. Pocket 2 is more like a GoPro of a healthy man :)

Johnny, do you take the wind muffs off the Pocket 2 often (say for putting back into the case), and if so, how well do the stickers hold up?

@@tlau1125 I've crazy glued the wind muff to one side of the sticker and just pressed down really good on the other side that sticks to the camera. They will fall off because of the case if I don't do this (learned the hard way).

It’s hard to judge the lighting 100% accurately with the different widths. I guess I’d have to say that although the dj1 is brighter it does tend to blow out some details in the distances. While dj2 is a little darker in the foreground it pays off with so much more detail both in the distance and inside the windows even.

as far as white balance , colors and a natural look the pocket 1 wins. The pocket 2 seems easier to use with it always compensating super quick. you have a feel that never looks dark. the downside to the 2 is its hard to tell where the shadows are, everything is quickly adjusted to be bright. I give and overall score pocket 1- 8/10 , pocket 2- 8.5/10. The pocket 1 is cheaper so get the pocket 1. If I had the money I would buy a $500 Lx10 and stabilization rig

I'm late to the comment party here, but I feel that the Pocket 1 field of view is more like what my eye sees, the Pocket 2 is less natural, at least to my eye.

Colors in "Pocket 2" are sharper, and brightest and contrast are better. from @9:10 by pausing, pausing video and comparing shots it's certainly determined that No. 2 has better picture.

Sadly I think of these as being disposable. I went through two Pocket 1's and am anticipating having to buy another Pocket 2. The battery life has held up but to my knowledge there's no way to replace it.

Thanks! This this excellent! Do you know if the audio gap issue exists with the OP2? On the OP1 when recording 4K/60 there would be a noticeable gap when you sequence the files in Premiere/FCP. I’m praying it’s been fixed! Thx for the videos!

I've never had that problem at 4K60 with the OP1 or OP2... I usually use external audio but even with the internal audio. I use Resolve and PowerDirector (Windows for both). Maybe the codecs on your mac are causing the issue?

Zoom in to where 2 clips meet and see if there is an audio gap at the end of file. It only seems to happen at the end of each clip, not the beginning. Check out my screenshot prnt.sc/vscxpg Thanks for any help! I am sending my files to a friend with a Windows machine to see if it's a Mac issue too.

Could you please test with wide angle lens with pocket 2 on a selfie stick and do a walking and talking vlog with onboard mic. I'm hoping that the selfie stick will increase FOV dramatically. Thank you! (If you don't have wide angle lens, even then selfie stick should have a better FOV for vlog where your face is in view). Thanks
