Danny, as far as I know, temperature limits are not the same depending on countries/ regions. In Europe, the limit is really lower than in the US, so European users will talk more about overheating. It was already the case on Action 2,3,4… there is a little cheat mode (easy to find on YT)to add to SD card to allow European customers to heat a bit more. I did it and now all is ok. 👍🏼
Exactly! EU has a limit of 48°C (118 Fahrenheit), which is reached quite fast. The only way to avoid this, is by using the "sd card text hack". All these tipps from this video don't make much difference. The main difference is where you are located, inside EU or outside.
@@ThomasAbtsdoes this work for their drones also? The Mini 3 Pros are getting pretty cheap on eBay now with the Mini 4 out, but I've heard that because there's no internal fan that you get overheating warnings very easily.
@@ZanderRound There seems to be some range of quality, but cams outside EU run with 4k60 till battery dies, while EU cams only get 10 to 30 min max before overheating. It also depends on the quality/speed of the sd card and/or if you use the smartphone app or charge/use battery stick, while recording. There are several long threads in the DJI forum about this topic.
I did my own tests the other day. They were done indoor with room temperature at approximately mid-70s. I ran Pocket 3 at 4k60 for 90 minutes, and 4k30 for 120 minutes. Auto screen-off while recording was turned on. While the camera did get quite warm, it did not overheat and stop recording by itself. I stopped the recording at those minutes, because I do not think I will realistically ever record for THAT long.
My DJI Packet 3 did overheat after 30 minutes in 90 degrees temps in direct sunlight. I turned it off for about 10 minutes and tried it again, and it was fine for the rest of the day. I love this camera.. My Sony A7 C did not overheat at all running it at 4k and at 30 FPS. Thank you for your tips. I will try them today in St. Louis.
I haven't seen any overheating issues yet with my Pocket 3. But almost every compact camera ever released has been accused of overheating. Great video Danny, and I loved the flames coming out of the Pocket, too funny. Thanks for sharing.
Obrigado..
Yesterday, I was shooting with my P3 4K at 30 FPS, screen at 50%, and Active Track on. It overheated, BUT I was in a small hot garage, and it shut off at 51:15. I waited 5 minutes and finished the shoot, which was another 30 minutes with no more issues. I had the Action 3 hanging around my neck with the same settings except screen off, and it did not shut down but was very warm to the touch. P3 screen was set to never go off as I needed to look over to confirm I am capturing what I want. I don't think it is an issue. I was very hot and should have taken a break myself.
I’ve absolutely had it happen to me. Although I will say that I was in Jamaica for a week and I had it recording on the tripod and didn’t realize and was sitting in the sun. When I turned back around after about 10 minutes it did overheat and shut down. While moved around it did get hot but only overheated on me once.
I've had my camera overheat 3 times in the last month. When I get to about the 20 to 25 min time while recording my knife reviews it will shut off on me. Now it has been over 100 degrees. I do film in the shade. I did just erase a bunch of videos from my sd card so hopefully that helps . I've been filming in 4k 30 frames but I'll also switch to 24. Honestly, I really feel the extreme temperatures have contributed the most .
I think the main criterion is the bit rate used when recording - the higher it is, the faster the camera warms up. However, the bit rate depends not only on the frame-rate, but also on the color profile used. D-Log M requires a significantly higher data rate than the standard profile. With 4K/24, the normal color profile is approx. 55 mb/s - with D-Log M approx. 80 mb/s. With 4K/60, the difference is approx. 110 mb/s to approx. 130 mb/s. I would also only connect the battery grip in an emergency during recording, as the camera does not use pass-through technology. This means that the camera continues to draw its power from the internal battery, which is simultaneously charged by the battery grip. This puts additional stress on the internal battery and naturally causes the camera to heat up more quickly. After initial tests, it also seems helpful not to hold the camera in your hand while shooting, which logically makes it more difficult to dissipate the heat. It's best to use the tripod adapter with the mini tripod screwed on for such shots - then you can hold the camera quite comfortably. The other things don't seem to have such a big influence to me. I have an EU model and was intrigued by the many overheating reports, so I tested it myself immediately after receiving it. I used the camera with the factory settings - except that I used 4K/24. The screen was on the whole time (in the factory brightness setting), the Mimo app was paired the whole time and after 7 minutes the DJI Mic 2 was also paired until the end. I didn't have the camera standing around somewhere, but was walking around the whole time with the gimbal in my hand (without the battery handle) and panning back and forth - so the gimbal motors were constantly busy. After 45 minutes I had to switch off the camera because the battery was running out (at the start the remaining capacity was already at 45-50% - in that 45 minutes there was no overheating warning. PS: Interestingly, with 4K/60 you have to decide whether you want to see the control image on the gimbal display during recording or in the Mimo app, where it is then slightly delayed.
Mine over heated yesterday, i was filming at 4k 60 for the first time. And while transferring the recordings to the ipad the camera over heated. I wasnt using the wireless mic i was using the rode video mic 2 using a usb c cable. I’m in the uk so it aint hot here. I’m sure they’ll fix this with an update soon. But to be honest i prefer 4k 24fps. Just waiting for the ND/CPL filters to be released.
I own the Pocket 3 and getting the microSD card in or out is almost impossible without using some sort of tool or another sd card. My fingernails are not long enough.
Hi Danny.. thank you for the tips and info .. you have made a difference in our efforts to become a content creator with our OP3.. but we have some challenges.. we can get the colos like you do.. nor do we know how to color grade.. any idea or suggestions? Thank you!
I've tested it several times by either leaving it on the tripod or walking around with it. The tests were all done on 4k 60. Mine never overheated. The videos stopped at about 110-118 minutes when the battery died.
I've noticed that it gets hot but I've never had it overheat, thank God. I use the exact settings you suggested and even 4K, 24 fps and even when it's cooler outside at night it gets hot. Not sure if it's a mechanical thing or a software thing. It's not that bad though because my ZV-1 does the same thing so it must be normal.
I made the comment about sd cards and was told that isn’t the problem - well I’ve always run high capacity transfer cards and never had issues with overheating as the canera can quickly get rid of the footage
In a couple of weeks I will be in the Caribbean and live streaming... need a bright screen but I might be able to drop the resolution to 1080p and try to stay out of the sun... either way, its a good test. I hope my Freewell ND filers arrive in time 😟
@@DannyBlack thanks ! The video light did make a difference in quality. But I don't want to add too much bulk. I am hoping a small magnetic solution would work.
In any camera I have, when I´m doing some kind of panning I ever shot in 60 fps to get a smooth panning, something not possible at lower fps. Is not possible in the Pocket 3 that you need lower your brightness, lower fps or lower resolution to not overheat. I hardpass this model, my Gopro Hero 12 replaced my S23 Ultra for my travel videos and I think there is no alternative yet.
Come to Europe and the whole device is useless. It records 5-10 minutes and shuts off. DJI is investigating this but heat sink is not enough for EU regulations. It is design flaw. They believed that it only affect the slow motion but normal modes are too totally useless.
To use an extreme pro sd card is not the best decision, because it hast only 90mb/s and the osmo pocket 3 needs 130mb/s writing speed to unleasch the whole potential. The golden red sandisk extreme is the better choice it can write up to 130 mb/s.
@@uldmediaThat’s correct. I just learned this a few months back. Never heard of a bit before. I thought the mb was mega byte. Iirc, 1000 bits equals 1 byte. So as long as the card is a V30 card, it’s good to go is my understanding.
@@uldmedia ok thx for the Information, i never heard of it befire. I just recently wanted to buy a faster sd card and wondered why they are so expensive lol.
