Thank you for your detailed tutorial.I just bought one today and I can't wait for it.I'm blown away by features of that thing!I'm big fan of your channel! Thanks again
Thanks for putting together this awesome tutorial. I followed your video to set up and balance my zv-e10 on the RS3 mini that I bought a few days ago. Keep up the great work!
So can you record videos when you are walking without any shakes ? I am watching a lot videos and never seen this zv e10 not shaking .Diffent world with sony a7 iii
@@allstarbury yeah I remember another channel also reported a similar issue. Let me look at the footage I captured on a bigger screen and see if it was shaking.
@@KwantumKitty well now i know if you want not shaky image then you need to spend €€ for stabilized hardware .Meaning body with stabilization like this lumix and lens with stabilization .
Thank you for sharing this! I almost purchased the RSC2 based on your video from 3 years ago. But I decided to go with the RS3 instead. Since this tutorial is for the mini, Can I use this tutorial to balance the full size Ronin RS3? The video DJI has for it isn’t as thorough and detailed as yours.
Yeah it is basically the same concept, but you might have to do it a little different depending on the arm layout. Just remember to lock the motors and do them one at a time in order 1, 2, 3, and you should be fine!
@@Jason_HermannYou’re a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you so much. I followed your exact steps and I finally got it balanced! Although I did find some nuances with the balancing part through the app. The balance test in the app doesn’t go through the same cycle as in your video. Instead it just takes me to DJI video clips showing virtual steps to balance each part of the gimbal. Nevertheless, I think I got it done. You’re very much appreciated! Thank you again!
No I do not. That lens is just to big and heavy for this gimbal in my opinion. You might be able to balance it, but it will be pushing the motors to hard also and will probably result in poor performance.
@@dylankylephotography Yes, those would be able to handle that payload. If you look at the specs, each gimbal has a max payload number associated with it for reference.
Thank you so much! After watching a few tutorials, this is the only one that helped me understand how to balance my camera. Amazing detail for beginners, appreciate this!
amazing!!!. best tutorial... unfortunately my Nikon Z 6ii is not pairing with this rs3 mini Could you please help with that... Thank you so much for your time
I'm sorry but I'm desperate. I made the timelapse as you said but on my sony I only have so many photos ... where do I find the finished timelapse movie?😢
Sony cameras does not turn the photos into a movie for you automatically when using the interval shooting feature. To do that I made a tutorial you can check out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HkRZe29Oq9I.html The other option would be to use the S&Q feature which will create either fast or slow motion movie in camera.
I have a Canon 5D Mark 4 with this gimbal I have it balanced vertically but it doesn’t have Bluetooth and whenever I plug cord in it throws it off any advice
So you can balance it, but not with the cord? If that is the case, then your only option if out of adjustments to fix, would be to add a counter weight somewhere... Not ideal, but can work... This gimbal is really a bit to small for that camera in my opinion as well depending on the lens ofcourse...
Process question: If you're an experienced videographer with the funds, do you rebalance your gimbal everytime you change lens (seems like you might miss shots since it takes time)? Or do you just buy gimabls for each camera/lens combo and balance before you got out?
I only use the gimbal for specific use cases most of the time and I use prime lenses mostly as well. So Yes, if I change lenses I will re balance, but if the lens is close in size and weight it only takes about 30seconds for me to rebalance. If it is a significantly different size lens it takes a bit longer to balance. If you are using a zoom lens you can zoom a decent amount without re-balancing and you should balance at the center of the zoom range you plan on using. Heavier duty gimbals will allow for more weight change without a re-balance as well.
Excellent explanation!!! But... as in all videos of this type I don't understand the tendency to complicate your life by moving the camera vertically rebalancing everything! A real waste of time! Vertical shots are taken for social media, where the quality is always sufficient! Shooting horizontally and then cutting a vertical slice of the video is, in my opinion, the smartest choice!
I hear ya, but the resolution is way less if you want to crop and it's much harder to "frame correctly" for vertical when shooting in horizontal mode I feel like. "Open gate" is really the best of both world some cameras offer which means it records the entire sensor, giving a more square higher resolution result great for both vertical and horizontal...
What a great tutorial ! , you cover a few little things that the other tutorials leave out. They just happen to be the essential (little) things that have made all the difference and mean that I am now 100% set up and even passed the gimbals own checks with a 3 x excellent ! I will be using this new tool in a new music video, a huge thanks from The Southern Electric.
thanks for a great tutorial...im actually dont use gimbals new to this world...is it possible to add an arca swiss quick release plate ontop of the default dji plate? since i have it attached all day long...do you think the balance would get unbalanced?
Best tutorial ever. I spent 1 hour trying to balance watching other people's videos until I found this one. The changes of the camera angles are SOOOOO helpful. Thanks man.
Having the scroll whell on the gimball set to TILT is really helpful. Much easier than always having to hit the joystick perfectly straight in order for it to not pan while you only want to tilt.
Thank you , and that might be pushing it depending on how fast you want to move the gimbal around. It's payload max is 4.4 pounds and vertical is a little harder for the gimbal I feel like, but I'm not 100% sure about that... I would recommend the the RS3 2 if you want to be covered 100% geni.us/hVWA
Well done- been switching between like 3 different tutorials- yours was the only one to mention CENTER MASS with the balancing part, definitely the most helpful!
Not this gimbal, but my other larger one yes, and it works awesome!! This gimbal it should work even easier due to the smaller size and easier set-up process. As far as connecting to the camera, It looks like you can use the bluetooth remote option like I did in this video with my A74 and that will give you Focus, Photo, and Record, or you could use a cable and try other set-ups as shown here... www.dji.com/support/compatibility/rs-3-mini/a6400
Hi Jason. How are you? Hope you're fine. I've got this gimbal recently. I have Sony a7 iv with kit lens. I am trying to zoom in and zoom out with dial, dial function was set zoom, but it did not work on this lens and I got a warning like 'it is not available with this lens'. then I change dial function as shutter speed, it did not work too. Am I doing something wrong ?
Doing more advanced functions is tricky and usually requires a combination of cables and camera settings. By the way, which kit lens are you talking about, because non of them for the A7IV I know of have a power zoom option? For the record all I use is the bluetooth shutter and record options, because when cables are used it locks down some of the camera functions..
@@Jason_Hermann Hello Jason, I am using FE 3.5-5.6/28-70 OSS. Until you mention about it I didn't now what the power zoom is but I just learned it. I connect camera and gimbal via bluetooth but as you mention its about lens it seems. I am gonna get something better soon anyway. I will make sure it works properly with gimbal. Thank you for respond. I am watching most of your videos and recommending them. Keep teaching, Have a good one.
I think this is a tad small for the R5, but the RP will prolly work weight wise... As far as compatibility you would need to check the documentation for specific cameras.
is there a way to invert the joystick on the vertical axis? I find it very confusing that forward goes up instead of down like aitplanes and everything with a joystick
Yes via the App in the channels area it looks like you can invert the direction of the joystick... Page 34 of the manual explains... dl.djicdn.com/downloads/DJI_RS_3_Mini/UM/20230118/DJI_RS_3_Mini_User_Manual_V1.0_en.pdf
my DJI RS3 mini arrived today, video shoot in 3 weeks!!!!!! FANTASTIC tutorial, made everything from set up to app use to shoot mode, so simple! THANKS JASON top chap! 👍
Hello I tried to connect my RS3 Mini to Fuji X-T30 ii with RSS USB-C to USB-C cable. The camera is equipped with XF 27mm 2.8 lens. Both camera and lens are listed as compatible at DJI website. But when I tried to use the follow focus feature with the gimbal's dial, I've found that it's completely unusable. And the reason is following. When I try to set the focus using gimbal's dial, the focus starts changing. But when I stop moving the dial, the focus does not stop changing. Sometimes the focus does not start changing when I start moving the dial. Sometimes the focus goes into infinity instantly. Overall experience is very laggy and I cannot use the feature in real shooting. Both lens are working normally, the focus in being set properly with the lens' dial. As RS3 mini supports changing other parameters with gimbal's dial, such as ISO and aperture, I tried changing them and it works smootly. The problem is only with focus pulling. Also I've noticed that while changing the focus with gimbal's dial, the s.s., F and ISO indicators on the bottom of the camera screen, which are normally blue in fully manual mode, are blinking into white and then into blue again. So I guess there is some issue in camera firmware in part of processing the RSS input for focus parameter. The camera and the gimbal both have the latest firmware by date I tried operating the camera both in USB tether auto and USB tether fixed modes - the result is the same. Am I missing some settings, or I've ran into a bug? Thank you!
Hey Victor, I never used or tried the fallow focus feature or the Fuji X-T30, but it sounds like you are doing everything correct and have a good handle on how the gimbal works with your camera. If the other features work good, then it's just not good with that specific feature I would say. R U using an actual geared rig, or just pulling focus from the camera itself? Is the camera in manual focus?
no, I don't have a focus rig, just trying to pull focus from the camera with the cable, using the gimbal dial, and yes, it is on manual focus. Ive seen a couple more people having the same problem with other cameras too, but still no answer on why this is happening. a bit frustrating not being able to use manual focus with the gimbal ... :/ @@Jason_Hermann
@@victor05052001 I would say this is happening, because you are not using a focus rig. Those are perfectly smooth because they directly turn the actually focus ring of the lens. What you are doing is digitally trying to pull focus tends to be much more jerky and inconsistent when controlled from another source in particular. I have the same issue for example when trying to pull focus using the Sony App as it just isn't the same as physically turning the focus ring. It kind of goes in steps and is not smooth, delayed response, etc... If you pull focus directly from the camera itself is it perfectly smooth?
this is the best and the most in detailed video that I've seen of this. Being a total beginner, I didn't know what each of those locks and lever does, but you made it very very clear and easy to understand. Thanks a ton. Really appreciate this.
Yes, they do after long periods of time, but like anything you will get used to it, and the gimbal is a tool that should only be used when needed. That is how I look at it anyway...
@Jason_Hermann Thank you, I originally purchased a Hohem MT-2, it seemed difficult to keep balanced. I returned it and don't know if was a fault of my own.
@@imboredDB Yeah, that looks like a pretty good option these days as well. Hard to say if it was user error or not, but when you say "keep balanced" that makes me wonder? The gimbal needs to be balanced and calibrated often, so changing zoom, adding a mic, or changing lenses will require a re-balance and calibration for sure. All the best, Jay
Great video and thank you very much for sharing these tips about this gimbal just a few questions about this. There's no problems with over hearing or short recordings at all with this gimbal. Kind regards Robert. :)
Dude, thank you so much for this video! Found it incredibly helpful and informative. Just finished setting up my new RS3 mini (first time gimbal user).
No matter what I do, I can never get my Nikon Z30 to stay still in any position which (from many tutorials) is telling me that my balance is off. It always tilts. Every time I do a balance test as well, it tells me I need to do all 3 sections again. I bought this last week and I still haven't managed to get a perfect balance yet. I feel hopeless at this point. It shouldn't be this difficult.
@@Jason_Hermann yeah I'm doing them one at a time. I move them all (one at a time) to about every position possible and the balance test still recommends I reconfigure. However the tilt axis is the kicker, as no matter how much I slide the adjustment back and forth, the camera will tit backwards. It should be compatible for the Nikon Z30 but apparently it isn't.
It's compatible with the Z30. It's not a matter of just picking various spots, you must balance each axis one at a time perfectly before moving on to next axis. I wish I could help you in person, because it is hard the first time for sure, but once you get it it's not that bad after that. Also note you can't change the camera in anyway once you balance it. Like turning the screen out or extended the lens, taking the lens cap on and off for example. You must have the camera 100% how you plan on using it. Also you may need to make micro adjustments to get it perfect and you can slide the camera mount plate position a little as well if needed...
@@Jason_Hermann yeah I understand, but the first axis itself never keeps perfectly balanced. So waiting for the rest to be perfectly balanced seems like an impossible task. I wish you could help in person too haha!
@@offbrandurkel You can't move on until the first one is perfect... Which lens do you have mounted? Did you try sliding the camera itself on that mount point? Which way is it off? Is it tilting backward or forward for example? Does it balance when aiming up?
Hello: I have a comment. Like many of your viewers / subscribers, I think you as well as all those out there in the RU-vid-verse that has provided your well produced unpacking / beginner's guide / best gimbal review and like have missed the boat on ONE simple aspect regarding the DJI RS3 Mini gimbal - the setup due to the poorly manufactured guide rails absolutely SUCKS!!!!! And as a reviewer, I have yet to see anyone mention that the guide rails for the various arms are difficult to adjust and tighten. I arms move a little bit better; however, the two connected that impact the camera itself are the problem that I see. My setup is easy - Sony a7 IV with a 17-35mm f4 Sony lens. Well, because of the poor build/design of the DJI RS3 mini, one has to constantly dismantle and put all camera trays to the base position so as to allow the gimbal to be stored. Unlike the Pro version of the RS3 - the short length of the gimbal arms do not allow you to stow away the gimbal (anywhere) without placing the trays / arms back to 0. Well, that means every time I want to use the DJI RS3 mini I have to re-adjust all of the arms & trays to balance it. Have you tried moving the various trays up & down the rails - YOU CAN'T and then try to tighten them with those small finger breaking knobs. DJI has done a terrible job at manufacturing and providing a smooth finish of paint to allow the close tolerances of the clamps to move among themselves. i constantly have to diggle the trays with the camera on it to get it to move up or down the rails. UGH!!!!! This manner of adjustments has made my use of the DJI RS3 Mini (which I purchased on your's & other's recommendations) most UN-ENJOYABLE!!!! So, I stopped using it altogether, as it is lying in several un-serviceable pieces on the garage floor at the moment. So, I took out my old Zhiyun WEEBILL-S gimbal - tried and true that has never let me down. Quick setup and you don't have to also setup the lower arm as on the DJI RS3 mini. I hold true to the simple notion - if it doesn't work - then it does not need to be in my bag. Next time, try to tell us about UGH factors in these contraptions as they cost us quite a pretty penny. And when they fail to be useful, it's a good waste of hard earned money as well. Peace OUT !!!!
I use my mini 3 all the time with different cameras and lenses and find it works fine for me. AS I said in the video supporting the weight of the camera while you make adjustments is key to avoid the binding aspects you are describing. The Pro gimbal costs way more and is huge compared to this gimbal, so you sort of get what you get. This gimbal being so compact makes it more cumbersome in some ways, at he cost of a lot less weight. You never get something for nothing I have found over the years reviewing. I never used the Pro model or else I would have compared the two gimbals to your point. All the best, Jay
I just bought the device and I am waiting for the cargo to be delivered. I did research, but after this video, I realized better what a right decision I made. An excellent video that is detailed, understandable and answers all the question marks. Thank you very much...🙏👋
Guys, I just bought this gimble to hopefully use it with all my small cameras, including my smartphone. I have a Samsung S10 in an otter box case and bought a spring loaded grip to hold it on the gimble shoe and it WORK JUST GREAT! (Except that it can't be connected on the bluetooth... I HOPE THAT DJI WILL FIX THAT SOON!) They will sell a lot more gimbals just for that I beleive, because the smaller ones (like the osmo 6) can't hold a phone with a case on it. And it's a pain in the @$$ to remove and put it back! Now all my cameras fits on one handle! (Even if I have to operate the smartphone manually)! By the way, first time I see that handle. Is it DJI that sells it and where did you buy it? Thanks. Awesome video dude and thank for your work. 😃
Great tutorial, thanks. I had a lot of problems getting the pan axis and I moved the camera away from the side motor a short distance and the pan axis worked great. In case someone is having the same problems. Cheers
Hey nice video, it was easy to set up this Gimbal. But my Camera has a Problem, i want to use a 20mm f1.7 on my Camera. But when i want to setup my Gymbal it always move horizontal, is there something i can do, to change it? Can i put some wheight on the front of the Camera?
Yes in these weird scenerios, you will need to add a counter weight of some sort to help balance the gimbal. I have never had to do this myself, but I have seen people do this with special set-ups.
I have this setup as well. But I get get the timelapse to stop at the final point and stay for additional shots. I like to pan to the final position and stay. Any idea?
What initial balancing do you do if you use a compact camera with a zoom lens which extends ? Thanks for your video portfolio , great presentation style.
Great explanation. I have coonnected my sony a7III camera to the bloototh, works fine withe the record buttom, but couldn´t make the DIAL work... (ISO, aprture) do you know if it actually works for that on Sony?
@@Jason_Hermann great vid. very clearly presented. on the zoom issue, I'm wondering whether the bluetooth-dial can control "Clear Image" since this is a digital zoom function?
