The DJI Smart Remote on maximum brightness is definitely a big difference compared to a regular phone for me, the image is a lot more clear and bright, I also don’t see so much glare and reflections from my surroundings which results in a better overall idea what’s going on on the screen. For me, this could mean the difference between making and missing the shot, and even just for this - i am quite happy with the remote already.
Of course i’ve yet to test many of the features of this remote, such as an in-depth test of the battery life, all of its different settings and features as well as testing other apps besides DJI Go 4 (videos coming soon).

I personally think this device will be very welcoming for professional drone pilots, because of the bright screen and the fact that you are not relying on your phone battery for the remote to work. Thats a huge improvement in my opinion, basically if you go on a cold day with a phone-remote, your battery is basically going to drain in less than an hour ! So i definitely agree with Mike !

I actually dont think its that expensive. Its a controller with a very bright screen built in. The dji crystal sky is only a tablet and the price of this device is almost the same for the smallest version. You pay more for controller of the phantom 4 pro plus.

@@ChristiaanRoest79 Agreed. It's only about £130 cheaper than the same size Crystalsky and includes a controller, which if purchased separately would cost around £295. I've already had mine for 4 days and I have to say that the image quality and stability is way way better than what I get with the wired iPhone/controller combo.

Try an android note 8. Its 12000 nits. It's a 6.4in screen. Does mostly everything the smart controller does.

Glad you're happy Mike! The screen does look good. I believe the Remote only works with the 2 Pro and Zoom at present and not the Enterprise despite the promo video. Even tho the Enterprise and P4Pro 2.0 are both ocusync 2.0, the remote doesn't work with either yet according to the admins in the DJI Forum. IMHO, it's a hugely chunky bit of kit and very much overpriced, but glad you love it and look forward to seeing how you get on. Cheers, Ian in London 👍🏻👍🏻

Can be possibly stressfull if your screen get black or get freezed. With the old controller you still have control of your drone (in case of your not in VLOS)even if your phone fail. I’ll get the smart controller anyway. Good video and its a smart way to speak about the smart controller .

I don't think strong sunlight justify the price. Battling the sun has always been an issue since cell phones, nothing has changed. If its "only" about a brighter screen. I feel it would be justifiable if the controller had more features than my cell phone.

I got it in the kit, with the M2P. It's friggin amazing. And alot better than relying on a phone. And much brighter screen, also have a mavic air and just sold a spark and the thing I hated most was the screen outdoors, (note 9). Previous P4P+ controller user here so didn't want to depart from a built in setup that I've been used to for my main drone. However I don't think the price is justified and worth the upgrade if say you already have the Mavic 2, and just stay with what you've got. However would highly suggest people consider it in the package deal if you're due to buy. It is damn good 👍👍 And saves a few hundred of a standalone buy.

Thanks for the review. I liked your personal reasons and its not for everyone. I wear polarised sunglasses and notice on cheaper phone screens I cannot see it until I rotate 90 degrees (due to polarisation). Able you able to check this smart controller for me? It's not released here yet but a few weeks away. I'm keen for the same reasons you have given and this is the only question before I back order. Thanks in advance.

Strongly considering ordering one. Quick setup, bright screen, no fiddling with the phone may be worth it in the long run. But I expect it to work with upcoming mavic pro models.

The price is definitely steep, but it's screen integration and 4K output capability make it worth it in my opinion. Sure, it isn't for everyone, but the Mavic 2 Pro is my only drone and I don't plan on getting another one any time in the near future. So yes, for me it is worth it and I will be getting one.

Nice explanation Mike, but I think the people who don’t have crystalsky before would go for it.....good business strategy by DJI to ensure the crystalsky would be hot item. I like smart controller but I prefer crystalsky stand-alone unit that I can use with other DJI drones

Look at it this way. My iPhone had 64 gb memory so needed replacing for way over £1000. I bought the air 2 comb9 with this remote for I think. £1550:ish. Yes it’s a lot but I have a brilliant new drone and a controller made for it. My iPhones still ok for emergencies but this makes it look cheap!

I just got a Mavic 2 Pro myself, and I think I might actually put my moeny into this controller. The whole handling with smartphone is rather clumsy, especially since I'm using 2 types of phones, one USB-C and the other pilot has an iPhone. Very annoying to switch out the cables and stuff.

Nice video & enjoyed the intro!! :-) I have one question regarding the portability of the controller - I notice a couple of screw holes at the bottom of the controller, is it possible to connect the remote to a shoulder strap or lanyard? I think it could add to the convenience of the controller in certain situations as I could have my remote ready to go in advance of setting up the drone :-)

Still there is reflection in this remote and the reflection issue in the other devices like iPhones and iPads can be solved easily To be honest it’s not worth the price

The price is governed by what DJI think people are willing to pay. Many are willing to pay, but for those who can't justify the expense, the Mavic 2 flies just as well with the original controller (and always will) and DJI aren't compelling you to buy the Smart. Having had one for a few days, to me it's worth the price and I'll keep the original controller as back-up.

Pretty chill, we don't have strict rules for drone flying (yet). You just need to fly under 120m and be careful around people/cars/buildings etc.

Mike, awesome review as usual and it definitely seems like a practical device especially at 1000 Nits...just nervous about Android & DJI app compatibility long-term. I have a lot of Android devices sitting in boxes because they became obsolete, but for $650 it's just a replacement for a $800 plus phone connected to the old remote.

The price is too high for something that only increases the brightness. If you ask me, they could have marketed to exchange the stock Mavic 2 controller and get the smart controller cheaper.

The latest Samsung galaxy phone can do up to 1200 nicts and the screen is bigger than 5.5 inch. Also to me setting up my iPad mini 4 doesn’t take that long at all, especially when I leave it in the controller even when charging the remote and the iPad. As for flying in the sunlight and live in the sunshine state florida, my sunshade does just fine blocking out the sun when I have no shade to fly in. Also how do you know that this remote will work with the future ocusync 3.0 if DJI plan to improve on the signal strength like they did with the Mavic 2? Another thing to consider is that I have telemetry and a display when flying with my remote and iPad mini 4 which is a plus. For example I was out flying my Mavic 2 zoom and the DJI GO4 app crashes, I thought my drone fell from the sky because said disconnected on the my iPhone X screen. But I was relieved when I was able to see the RPM of the Mavic 2 props on the telemetry that’s built into the Mavic 2 remote! And I was able to bring the drone back with the built in telemetry! Finally the price to me doesn’t justify me giving up my iPad mini 4 and my sunshade they do just fine at the moment! One love.

Great review, as usual. This thing is just definitely not for me. It ONLY works with Mavic series... you admit it only works with OccuSync 2.0 and you state that OccuSync 2.0 is here to stay... on what do you base that statement? What happens when Occusync 3.0 comes out? Is it obsolete? I think so! Pretty big investment for something that may not be viable for use with the next generation of DJI drone or a new Phantom, which we all know will be coming... perhaps I'll wait for a used one. I can afford $649, but it's not "chump change".

@@DroneSupremacy The units are blocked from ordering and I called DJI and they said the FCC has not signed the paperwork for the unit because of the gov shutdown. I can't even put it into my cart so it would get shipped quicker, DJI told me to keep checking back. If it wasn't for this issue, the gov can stay shutdown, the average citizen does not miss them.

No, it does not run litchi. The DJI O/S is a bastardized version of Android with none of the Google play services. Their API is proprietary too. Mine crashes frequently while drone is in flight and scared the begeesus out of me twice. REALLY unstable. I wish I’d never bought the damn thing and had waited until version 2. Save your money.

My Galaxy S9 is brighter than this overpriced TX. The S9 is 1,130 nits which is very bright. Used with an anti glare screen protector I have no issues. Plus I still have a fully functional Smartphone that can run Dji GO/Dji GO 4 and Litchi which I love. If they dropped the price to around $300 I might be interested.. but if you like it I'm very happy for you.

I already fly with the 5.5" CS, running on the finicky unreliable and last to be updated ANDROID platform! As you state, love the visual quality and that's why I purchased it...currently priced at $469. However, this smart controller...more marketing BS...your review has the same monitor I already own...same awful android platform that DJI ignores for the most part...so Why would I pay $649 to 'upgrade' something I ALREADY own! Frankly, I would not! However, if the "smart controller" had been based on the MORE stable and DJI attentive IOS platform....ahh... and there I would seriously consider purchasing this new toy...but alas, that is not the case!

@@CCWSig its a normal price. I paid 1250 euro for my Samsung note 9 phone of which the manufacture costs are about 300/400 euro. The selling price of electronical devices is at least 3 to 4 times the manufacture costs. Why? Because lots of people have to be paid like employees of DJI and sellers. DJI isnt going to make a profit if they sell this product for 300 euro. Thats just not the way to make this work. I paid more for my dji phantom 4 plus controller.

Too big I'll stick with the stock controller and before I spend that much for a controller I would buy an umbrella hat

Hard pass. Screen on top, analog on bottom, I'm a simple man. Also, for this price I could get a back up spark, filters, an extra battery, and still have money left over.

True. But please remember the layout (screen/sticks) is the same with the original Mavic anyway, so i guess that's why they did it that way.
