DJI Smart Controller Mavic Air 2 v01.00.0820 Update Problems and Solution

I had some significant issues with my DJI Smart Controller after the v01.00.0820 firmware update. The Go4 app would crash, and the Fly app would freeze up. A factory reset turned out to be the solution.

I'm glad you finally got it sorted out. And now you can fly both the Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic Air 2 successfully with it. No more having your phone overheat when you flying in the middle of the day in the hot sun. Great video, and thanks for sharing.

Great video I realize its 3 years old DJI has the bugs all pretty much fixed if not all I have many flights on my Mavic Air 2 no problem what so ever I love the smart controller, and out in the sun no problem, I did put a matt screen protector on my smart controller I did not like using the phone with the air 2 atoll, I was ready to sell them both Air 2 's but now with the Smart Controller, there my go to drones, also have the mini 3 which for little drone 249gm it's a winner for sure, the 3pro has a few more features but I like landing legs on the front of my drones. Only problem now is if you buy a new smart controller (2023) not a refurbished, you're going to pay, but if you want a quality controller= $$ Thanks again good job-nice area too.

Thanks, Marcus, very interesting experience. Good that you got the initial glitches sorted. And no doubt there will be more updates for the controller as more people buy it. Hopefully as it becomes useable with more DJI drone models, demand will increase and the price will come down to a sensible level. Then maybe (because as you know I don't use a smart phone) I will upgrade from my Fimi A3 ;-) Keep well, Peter.

For the first 18 minutes and several notes like he's flying the Air 2 with the 2 zoom apps, no wonder like me, he confused. But then you got out the Mavic Air 2, (as advertised) and it all came right. The smart controller works well with the Mini 2 as well. Ask Ron.

Hey Marcus, my update didn't go as easily as yours, but it finally got done after several starts and stops. On the other hand my flights have been pretty much by-the-book, with a couple of exceptions. 1) I have to re-bind my MA2 each time I power down the SC. I can power-down the MA2 to change batteries, etc. and all is well, but not the SC. 2) I had a problem with the app today where the "Disable Sideways flight", one of the new features, did not appear on my screen under the Safety tab. It just wasn't there. The last time I had used the drone (on my range test) I had it disabled to keep a consistent flight. So now I'm trying to fly my MA2 and it just goes straight!!!!! I finally got it back on the screen (not sure what I did) and was able to enable sideways flight, thank heavens. It's possible the option is not visible during flight (why not just grey it out?) and I got it back after landing and shutting down the MA2, but I'm not positive that's why it re-appeared in the app. I'll check it out tomorrow. That is odd that it does not stay bound to the SC. I've used the SC a few times since the flight shown here, and have seen no other issues. For me the factory reset was the key. Thank you Doug!

Not need to bind every time. Just swipe down, select settings, aircraft management. Then will see the aircrafts with its name which are binded before. Maybe it is a bug, but in the startup screen the same management menu not shows the binded crafts.

Always enjoy your videos, Marcus, But, I am not sold on the DJI Smart Controller after seeing several folks have problems with upgrading them to work with the MA2. Just way too much "fiddlin'" to make it work, IMHO. I bought into the DJI Crystal Sky monitor for my Mavic Pro way back when, but DJI has abandon any support of it with the newer model drones like the MM or MA2. The displays are nice and bright, but both the Smart Controller and Crystal Sky are just too expensive, and don't feel integrated enough with other DJI products to me.

My SC is new & went through the update & my Fly app freezes, but has not crashed. I have gotten the tutorial screens too. Would like to know what is really happening. I thinks it's bad FW. Seems to be a lot worse after I fly the MA2 & then switch back. Glad to see I am not the only one. Still watching at 8 min. Cheers, Jon

Test went really well. I connected to M2P & Ma2 3 times each & did 2 full flights down 2 25%. The only thing that was unexpected was a FW up on my M2P. After that all went perfect. The M2P connects almost instantly when linking & the MA2 takes about 8 seconds : ( The wasn't any freezing what so ever. I also used a Parabolic range extender that really works well. Went a little farther than normal & did not get weak signals when normally I would or even disconnect. I don't think I will reset mine : )

put your landing pad/ takeoff a bit further away from that awning you are standing under .....it will help

Please check it on the map as she say at start up but where is the map? The smart controler is too weak to handle the map . I have cancel my purchase after seeing too many problems with the SC. I think a new one or improoved one will be here next year so I'm waiting patiently for the Mavic 3 and possibly new SC we will see .The Mavic air 2 with original controler is doing great for now. Thank you! Because the smart controller does not have an internet connection out in the field, it does not automatically update the maps. You need to preload the maps for the area you plan on flying in.

It looked like beautiful weather there, Marcus. Took a bit of sorting out with the issues, but you got there in the end. I'm really attracted by the idea of the smart controller, but can't justify the price at the moment. Now where did I put that lottery ticket? beautifully clear images from both drones, by the way.👍🤝😎

My smart controller would only update through Wi-Fi not assistant two, how weird is that. I also had to do a reset because there is no storage on these things. The app does crash occasionally and always when you're out quite a ways too bad they didn't make it using iOS

That's odd that you could only update via WiFi. I have noticed that some ISPs block DJIs servers. I use a VPN to route through another server to use DJI assistant 2.

Neither of them have particularly good cameras, but I'd give the edge to the SG906 Pro 2 because it has less jello than the X12. 👍

I have been waiting for MOST of the 'bugs' to be taken out of the 'Smart Controller'. One is you cannot update the controller from WIFI. My iPad has no problem with that. I just power up the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, controller and the iPad mini. The software (Over the network)(WIFI) will go out and get any updates AND install them automatically. I understand that you have have to download the DJI Assistant APP to a computer THEN down load it and THEN update the controller. Maybe some day DJI would get this information and make the changes. Until then I will use my iPad. Thanks....

What model DJI drones is the smart controller limited to? That looks a lot simpler than connecting my smartphone to the basic controller. BTW, the mystery mellons could be cantaloupe?

The smart controller works with the Occusync 2 drones, i.e. the Mavic Air 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, as well as the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. 👍

Do a hard reset to smart controller before sending it back and do any updates from that point and see if that makes any difference.

I don't have a MA2 only a MP2 with smart controller updated with latest firmware. I also experienced what you described as a software crash when the smart controller seemed to return to home screen on its own. I was thinking that I had inadvertently pressed the back/return key at the time so I was not so concerned. When I returned to aircraft it seemed to pick up right where I left off. Could that be a reason for your software crash?

It looks like your direction indicator is not working properly when flying Magic Air 2 and when you opened map to locate aircraft in area the direction indicator disappears all together . I have this same issue with my smart controller and have not found a solution, even from DJI. Would love to hear any ideas. I have recalibrated both controller and drone without luck.

If you didn't have to press a button on the drone to rebind, then you could up binding to a drone that you don't own, that would be disastrous.

@@IdahoQuadcopter What if you had two M2Z's, how would you bind to other one if the controller was bound to the first one? And if you didn't have to press a button on the drone, then how would the controller know which drone you wanted to use? I can live with the minor inconvenience if it allows me to use multiple drones.

The biggest advantage of the smart controller is the bright screen. If that is not important to you, stay with the regular controller. 👍

I have version V01.00.0880 and the app is extremely slow and crashes constantly while flying. Just like you I was flying dark and I am flying the Air 2. Exactly! No more auto updates! Its aggravating missing good flight shots reason being that there is a tremendous amount of lag and unresponsiveness. I am not sure what you did to correct the problem? Could you please elaborate?

@@chino4234 good morning ☀️ this was fixed but still has flaws when using quick shot and those other features it crashes on occasion rarely though. The SC perhaps needs more memory.
