Normally, I'd say that this is a sign of a player about to be moved. But in Jarry's case, I suspect he may be seeing a sports psychologist, not altogether different than what helped Fleury get his game back.
@dhunter1133 but hope for a move where Dubas, like the #65 trade, waves a wand & somehow doesn't have to retain $$ yet he frees up $$ for our cap!! Not too much to ask for lol
6:46 guess what else we’ve seen DK we’ve seen the Penguins miss the playoffs the last two years before that it was a first round exit how many times in a row. Just because it worked before for a short time doesn’t mean it’s working now and to try and use last year when they missed the playoffs I can’t say is a good argument at all or even close to one.
I was at fire the guy (Sully) for 4 years. He has say in who plays and what players they bring in. People want to put this at Dubas feet, but this has been the case with the past 3 GMs.
Yeah it's blatantly obvious that nothing is gonna change as long as Sully is coach. His absolute refusal to play a different style is his fatal flaw as a coach. I'm old enough to remember Sully coaching the Bruins, and same thing happened there. Only difference is the Bruins actually had the stones to can him.
That's more than fair. I'm more in the camp of people who feel the Penguins should have moved on from Sullivan, but that so much of the fan base has tipped over into "Sullivan sucks" or even "Sullivan was never a good coach to begin with" is a strong reminder that there is no mental health screening for becoming a Penguins fan and that 9/10ths of fan chatter isn't to be taken seriously. One of the biggest red flags for me is that even veteran players appear to be lost within the team's defensive scheme, which has mostly been sieve-like. The other is that there is something palpably off with Sid. One wonders if he has started to tune Sullivan out.
Yes, Jarry has been bad! But with this Pens D corps and overall D zone coverage, it wouldn’t matter if Brodeur and Roy were in net together… they would still give up 3+ goals a game!
It's clear that Jarry's head isn't right. My guess is that they trying to re-set him, the same way they re-set Fleury back in 2013 (or was it 2012?) when he was broken mentally. (And no, I'm not comparing the goalies, just the situation.) But they likely took him on the trip because they weren't sure if Ned would be truly physically ready, and now they are comfortable that Ned is healthy.
I think one issue is that these three games are piggybacking off of a very poor end to last season where he lost his net to Ned in must-win games down the stretch. If you bunch together list 15-20 starts, he's still well under a .900 save percentage and around/above 3 GAA. So I think they're looking at that sample size even though it's a new season. He'll get another chance. I think it's inevitable.
We all understand your respect for Sully, but take out the 2 cups and what does his tenure look like? He's never got this team to a place they shouldn't be and if anything since the cups the Pens have fallen short of expectations
Thats insane to take out his 2 greatest accomplishments then evaluate him. If you cant remember, he came in during a season that they were out of the playoffs and brought them to a Stanley cup. A few years ago they were dominating a good Rangers team until a few players, including Crosby and the top 2 goalies, got hurt and allowed the Rangers to come back from down 3-1 in the series. Then, Hextall and Burke systematically turned the Penguins into an old and slow team full of bad contracts. Letting the young guys go for the likes of Jeff Carter. This has also made it near impossible for Dubas to do much of anything except shed those terrible contracts for a slightly less terrible contract in the reigning Norris trophy winner. I cant imagine anyone can honestly say that at the time (or even now) that they would rather have Jeff Petry and Mikhael Granlund on the team. Dubas also brought in as many bottom 6 guys that he could afford for tryouts and said compete for the jobs available. Thats really the best you can do with 91k in cap space
Terrible take. Remove the accomplishments of any coach, and you have a terrible coach. He got us back to back cups. Our prospects aren’t that good, our GM let our best winger go and never replaced him with someone even close to equal production. Making our stars , who yes, they aren’t young, make up for the mess when they should be rewarded with strong wingers. Our defense is terrible. A coach can only do so much.
@chrismeier5553 you need to understand it was impossible to keep Guentzel. He wanted and is worth more money than the Penguins had to offer him. He was on his last year, and Dubas, smartly, got something for him rather than letting him go for nothing in return and hoping to sign someone in a bleak free agency pool.
@@joshjohnson9824 not that insane considering I didn't mean forget about them?? Better wording was "outside of the 2 cups..". But he took over the team and won immediately. But you can't argue since then Pens have underperformed in the playoffs including getting embarrassed multiple times by NYI. Since then missing the playoffs by a point or 2. I agree prior management did not help the roster/draft capital. They screwed it up big time. But don't great coaches do more with less? Considering "less" is 2 generational forwards and now two HOF defenseman? Not so insane buddy.
@@chrismeier5553 False. I wasn't saying remove it and ignore it I was saying outside of those 2 cups from a roster he inherited. But, remove Belichick's first couple SB and he's got a few more later on. Not insane buddy
You either have a system that doesn’t work with the players you have, or you have players that aren’t willing to play the coach’s system. Either way, the fastest solution is a coaching change.
Great show, DK, and thank you for your time, thoughts, and energy put into your show! I absolutely agree, and I actually must admit, I've been one of those "fire the coach" but without a substantial logical excuse, whereas you're clearly changed. This in part is why I enjoy your show so much. I'll 3rd row behind the Canucks goal Saturday night and will be cheering our Penguins on with my daughter so until your next show, God bless you
If this was the plan, they brought him just in case Ned wasn't 100%. Now that he is good, send him back bc I'm sure he's upset to sit in the box and it's bad for the morale
Whatever they're doing, I hope it works because Jarry suuuuucks. And it also sucks that when they are finally getting contributions from the 3rd and 4th lines, 1st and 2nd are sleepwalking through games.
The '16 and '17 Cups were great. But I'll never understand this attitude as if Sullivan was created in a lab by combining the DNA of Toe Blake, Scotty Bowman, and Al Arbour.
You can have a great system and not be capable of executing it. A coach cannot afford that. Carolina initiates their defense. It's physical, man-on-man pressure. They know what they are trying to achieve. We don't have any idea what we are trying to do and how to enact it to make it successful. And it's the coaches job to provide a system and how to achieve it. That's NOT happening. The heat of that conversation needs turned up. We thought the issue was graves. Then we thought it was Jarry. Now everyone is incapable of doing what's required. Is it time for the uncomfortable conversation about the players ability to execute due to age? Energy loss? Tonight will probably answer that question
@christopherweir6445 anyone who blames a single issue isnt very smart. I think it all started when they let Fleury walk and theres been a string of bad decisions by management ever since.
DK, the Jarry situation is very strange. Unless there is a trade, I don't expect Coach Sullivan or GM Dubas to provide additional details. But I appreciate Taylor asking the follow-up question, and appreciate your thoughts as well.
