DKC Exposed: The Making of Donkey Kong Country - Promotional VHS

In 1994, Nintendo of America sent this VHS tape to Nintendo Power subscribers. It combined absurdly nineties sensibilities with the sort of unrealistic depiction of game industry jobs that would mold the career dreams of millions of American children.
In the special, host Josh Wolf visits the Nintendo Treehouse at NOA's Redmond headquarters to see the final stages of DKC's development, and interview a few key members of the Treehouse staff. Tim Stamper literally phones in a brief interview leading the radical host to a zoo to gander at real apes in their unnatural habitat.
And guess what folks, guess what - THEY GOT PAAAAAID.
Host: Josh Wolf
Featuring: Ken Lobb, Tim Stamper, Tony Harman, George Zachary, Michael Kelbaugh

This is such a 90's time capsule! The T-shirts, the basketball jeysey's, the caps, the radical slow motion video effects, the background music, it's as if you're back in 1994/1995! The game has aged a lot better then the 90's video editing though...... the game still feels fresh today!

@DannyKavka
@DannyKavka 3 года назад
For those who weren’t around back then (or may have forgotten), the Killer Instinct teaser at the end is the first glimpse at the “Ultra 64”, which had been announced in Nintendo Power but otherwise didn’t have any gameplay footage available outside of a trade show. It eventually became the N64 and the arcade-perfect port of Killer Instinct (which ran on a version of the N64 hardware) was scrapped in favor of a quicker SNES release when the Nintendo 64 release was delayed.

@gizaha
@gizaha 4 года назад
Indeed they don't use 12 but: They used 2 layers at bg2. Later they add 2 layers at bg1. Then they make bg3 priority and put to it 3 layers. At final they add snow at sprite layer, a total of 8 fucking layers of snow, different speed each. You can't count them without disabling the other bg. They "trick your eyes" thus achieved the desired effect.

You can get bored of platformers regardless if you're a pro or suck at them; but as soon as you watch something like this, it really hypes you up like you're a 10 year old kid waiting for this damn game to come out. And the sad thing is, is that the developers seem like they actually loved working on and playing the game! Seems like now most huge developers are forced to work on games they're told to do and it's rushed with not much passion.

You gotta love the uncharacteristic hard rock music playing along with the game-play scenes of DKC. Granted, DKC did have one track that was rock, but otherwise it was more about having a naturalistic, jazzy, or industrial sound. I guess that isn't radical enough.

I remember getting this VHS as part of my dad's subscription or having bought some Nintendo Power; it could also have been from when he did the special rebate after buying the Super Nintendo/Super Mario World release pack, where he was able to get Super Mario All Stars for free. Either way, I remember getting it some time before the game's release, which was probably around October of that year. Fast forward to November 23rd, his birthday; the game was out though I probably didn't think about it since I was 8 years old at the time plus, even with 2 full-time working parents at the time, tuition costs and the fact that video games were a luxury, I didn't expect to get it for awhile. Anyway, I get off half-day that day since it's the day before Thanksgiving, my mom picks me and my brother up from school, it's a rainy day so we know we'll be inside. My dad also was off that day due to a shut down around the holiday at work at the time. We go home, have lunch, and my mom decides to give him his presents from us to him. A shirt, some tool I don't remember, but it was the 3rd and final gift that really gets me to this day. I still remember spending that afternoon hanging out and taking turns playing Donkey Kong Country, alongside my dad, my younger brother, and younger sister while dad got the house ready for people to come over for his birthday while my mom was at work. I doubt I would remember that day as well as I do now, nearly 30 years later, had it not been for that game.

Gaming industry was just so different back then. Maybe being a kid just made it seem better than now plus my parents were the ones buying the games back then lol.

I was born in 1994 but I grew up playing the SNES. Honestly I much prefer the SNES over my generation Nintendo console the N64. This video brought back so many memories. I remember my older cousins had the VHS tape and I used to watch it religiously while they were all at school and I was just home chillin before grade school started for me. What a time to be alive for video games. It’s just not the same anymore.
