Container Train 565 is rolling along the 70 lb rails of the Whanganui Town Branch in New Zealand, on the first stage of its journey from Castlecliff to Wellington. The DL locomotive is gently swaying through this tree lined section. Around the corner, the train disappears onto the Junction with the Marton - New Plymouth Line at Aramoho
The Whanganui Branch has been in continous use since its 1878 opening. Train 565 is carrying product from dairy processor Open Country as well as general goods. The freight service is a partnership between KiwiRail and CentrePort of Wellington and can offer a cheaper rate than the road company providers on the same route.
The KiwiRail DL class was manufactured by CRRC Dalian 中车大连机车车辆有限公司. Introduced from 2010 onwards, they are the most powerful diesel-electric locos in service in New Zealand. The class represents the first order for a Chinese-built locomotive from a western country.
