The upcoming chapter 23 is actually one of the best chapters in the whole series. Everybody drools over chapter 7 because of Y'Ghatan, but for me, that fateful night in Malaz City takes the cake!

I'd love a novella about the Malazan Armies exploits in Shal Morzinn against the 3 wizards! as apparently they got ran out of it and Kellenved was scared!! there's a small short story called Goats of Glory about a Malazan Army -The Rams and the few survivors of it coming out of the Demon Plain.

Some things that seem random in this book are just a bit clearer if you’ve read Night of Knives. It’s set in Malaz City, the sea, and Y’Ghatan, for instance. Several characters and concepts return here. But it’s not a must to have read it first. I bet it was fun for Erikson to riff on his partner’s new stuff in an “exquisite corpse” sort of way.

you don't need to remember a book or movie or story for it to change who you are... that happens in the moment. but how can you not remember good stories... it is so strange to find out other brains don't work like mine do and Ganoes does not sanctify salvation like he did with the outsider hose of chains - he simply realised that it exsisted and to make accurate readings he needed the new card in the deck

I think ONE book a year is too little for it to be worth it. Like, if you were doing Malazan at that pace, it'd only take you... almost 30 years to read every entry currently released in the series? Including all of Erikson's and Esslemont's series, of course. Like, that's way too much time. If it were, idk, 10 books a year, then it'd be a more competitive choice imo OOH, I love the deck readings. It really is hard to parse, and I don't remember anything of that one, but I remember loving it. That scene with Hellian and Banaschar is so good. She's one of the funniest characters, but strangely competent for a complete drunk, I guess. Oh my god, Fiddler's scenes there in the end of this book are great. I mean, everything is great in the end of this book, but I love Fiddler's things in particular. The deck reading, the reunion with the shop keeper. So good. Can't wait for next week!

The ending of this book has far reaching consequences that don't get resolved in this series. There honestly needs to be an in depth series focusing on everything that happens because of the fallout of the ending. While Esslemont covers a lot of it, he wasn't the strongest writer back then. He has a much better grasp on the series now, but some of his earlier work isn't the best.

Helian is so freaking funny.

All I can think of for how Lana peonounces Ganoes is the Muppet Show skit 'And now the g-news with Gary G-nu'.

In an early book club episode you both discussed finding out what the apostrophized names suggest. Gives a sort of hint to T'amber.
