It is pretty great in Monterey. Like you said, there are all kinds of opportunities to take advantage of. It’s just a great experience and I miss it a lot.
DLI is an amazing place....the location as well as the schooling. It's a beautiful place and a very unique and precious opportunity. If you get in, know that you are very blessed. Take full advantage of this opportunity. Put your nose to the grind and study hard. It'll come back to you in 10 folds.
I’m enlisting as a cryptolinguist! I speak 3 languages (English Spanish & russian learning Arabic) and seriously can’t wait! I haven’t seen any YT videos about DLI and my recruiter didn’t seem to really know much about it so this is extremely helpful!!!! PLEASE make more videos!! Thanks!
Thank you for the kind words. That list of languages is impressive! You shouldn’t have any trouble at DLI then if you pick up languages that easy. My recruiter didn’t know anything either, glad these videos helped!
Hey! I’m a senior in high school and I’m considering joining the Airforce and going to the DLI. I picked up German as an exchange student in Germany all last year, so I’m familiar with the language learning process. I’m curious what you think about the Mandarin program at DLI?
If you can get Mandarin, it's a language that will open up many doors for you even when you leave the military. China is now a powerhouse, economically. As the matter of fact, lots of Americans are moving abroad to chase career opportunities in China, so it's a good choice. The language is intense but well worth it. You just have to put your nose to the grind and study hard. Mandarin is a very "tonal" language meaning that if you flux the tone a bit, it usually will mean something else other than what you meant to say.
To go there you need to pass the DLAB. Ito qualify for all languages you need to do well. Otherwise you get weeded out. Look for the new DLAB study guide by Sam G Newmann.
Many military trainings give you college credit, and DLI is a long one. I received enough credits to almost get another Associates Degree while here. I had to bring my transcript to make up a few credits to complete the degree. It’s a nice benefit if you don’t have a degree to get an associate while getting paid to learn a foreign language!
@@AndrusJones same here....when I was discharged, I took tons of CCAF credits, 2 or 3 courses from UM and Embry Riddle, a couple of CLEPs and I ended up separating 4 lower level courses short of an AA....we rotated to Eglin where I took one semester of the lower level courses UWF at Pensacola, which only had Juniors and Seniors at the time. Got a BA out of it thanks mostly from all my Air Force credits and the Vietnam era GI bill
In my experience, my recruiter said I’d find out in my last week of basic. I actually found out after that, during my first week of Aircrew Fundamentals. I probably would’ve found out earlier if I hadn’t been in Medical hold for a bit right after basic.
For sure you can bring your wife! Have her start reaching out to the Fort Ord housing once you get to Basic, because there is sometimes a waitlist, but a month or so into DLI you’ll hit phase 5+ and you can move off post with her.
