I am a US Army combat veteran from 2000 to 2010. Disregard the global events I would advise people not to make joining the military their first priority. Only if you absolutely have to, or need the benefits desperately. Keep in mind, the biggest reason to join is the benefits and sadly, some might find are longer worth it. There is no retirement pension anymore. It’s a 401k style and a truth is, you’re not going to be able to make meaningful contributions as far as payments to that TSP unless you go in as an officer. If you’re enlisted, you’ll be so underpaid that it really won’t make a difference even with the pay raises is coming in 2025 Inflation is too high, cost-of-living is too high for most places you will get stationed, and sometimes you’re basic housing allowance when you’re able to live off base may not be enough depending on your rank. Second, the G.I. bill has been watered down while the post 911 G.I. bill is still in still decent. Most branches now require you to do 10 years of service if you want to pass it down to a family member the day of being able to pass it down whenever you wanted are gone. you have to put in way more time. Tuition cost are climbing so high depending on where you want to go to school the G.I. bill may not be enough to pay 100% of the tuition and all the other additional cost of going your particular college. Yes, the G.I. Bill will cover you at state College. For the most part but if you’re going to a private college or an advanced specialty program, there is a cap on the amount of the tuition that can be paid. It will not always be 100% at any school. Third the military is filled with bad leadership up and down the ranks from NCOs to low level mid and high ranking officers, you will be stuck working for a careerist minded leader (mostly officers) at some point in time and they can make your life a living hell. This is one of the major reasons why people leave, they don’t quit the military but bad leaders. So many smart and good people have been chase out by awful leaders and all that’s left to rise to the top are those toxic leaders. In reality is not so much because of danger of being killed or wounded why people get out but more so because the leadership is awful. I can’t stress this point . It was the primary reason why I decided to leave the military, and lastly, they’ve changed the standards so much and there are so many shortages across the branches that you will be overworked and force to complete task and missions not assigned to your MOS and forced to perform higher ranking functions and jobs 1-2 ranks above your pay grade because there is no one else to fill in the job. Although the branches except for the Navy are saying they are meeting their recruiting goals. The truth is they really not, they’re just playing with the statistics to make it appear that they making their goals but in reality they lowered the targeted recruitment numbers to soften the blow. This is a prime example of leadership manipulating task and goals in order to make mission and have a positive NCOER, or OER. With all the shortages and understaffing in so many units, your operational temp may be significantly higher in competitive to before and during some portions of the GWOT. We technically are not in mass mobilization or in. a war footing. This is happening in peacetime military.The military is struggling horribly just to fill its ranks and maintain the operational readiness. And one final point, DEI has infected the culture of the military. Officials say there is no evidence but it was visible under the days of Obama. Now it’s at an entire different level.
