IMPORTANT: I forgot something. Thanks to @CaribbeanSimPilot for pointing this out. You can manually add the DLSS file you download from TechPowerUp to DLSS Swapper. 1. Download and unzip the dll file from here: www.techpowerup.com/download/nvidia-dlss-dll/ 2. Click on the books icon on the left in DLSS Swapper. 3. Select Import on the upper right. 4. Locate the DLSS dll file you downloaded and double click it. 5. It will ask you to confirm, select Import. Version 3.6 is now in DLSS Swapper. 6. Click on the Games icon on the left. 7. Click on MSFS, highlight v3.6.0.0 and click Swap. Job done! Sorry for not mentioning this in the video!
FYI, I changed setting to DLAA, and upon clicking 'apply and save', the game crashed hard, putting up a dialog stating my 'graphics device encountered a problem...'. A list of possible reasons were given, including a note about DX12 being BETA. I will avoid DLAA.
Wow, I've gotta say, I'm totally blown away here! 🌟 Ever since MSFS launched, I've been up in the virtual skies, living it up in VR. I've been tinkering with Windows 11, nudging every little slider in Nvidia Control Panel, diving into the depths of the registry, and fine-tuning MSFS settings like a maestro. Honestly, I thought I had maxed out all the performance and quality I could ever get from my MSFS VR setup. But then, like some kind of tech wizard, you swooped in and turned everything I knew upside down-in the best way possible! I followed your advice to the letter, and holy moly, I'm having the time of my life! The VR experience is smoother than silk, and the quality? Chef's kiss! A MASSIVE thank you for leveling up my game! 🎮✈🎉
Totally agree!! Max forced resolution on native res devices is the key here. My sim is awesome now. I'm on a PMDG 737 from EHAM to OMDB, live wx and it's smooth as butter. The visuals are stunning. My fans are running a bit faster than before the holy grail hit my system, but only by 10% . I went into the bios and AI tuned the fans for heavy load gaming and that really helped. All in all, an awesome result.
Thanks for taking the time to get this info out to the Flight Sim community. I used your settings on my Intel 13900k system with the Pimax Crystal and a 4090 GPU, and wow! The gages on the Bell 206 are so clear as is the surrounding terrain. Best of all, run with a TLOD tool. Shudders have been just about eliminated. Flew the route from KSNA to KCMA with a northwest track . Flying under the Bravo airspace. And it didn't cost me $550/HR Cheers!
HOLY COW, I will say that I am normally a skeptic when it comes to MSFS settings videos so I tend to take things with a grain of salt. I have been addicted to Helicopters lately and have been flying the Cowan Sims MD-500. My chief complaint was that in VR the cockpit looked soft and fuzzy, so I followed your directions and it is a night and day difference. Not only are the instruments CRYSTAL clear, even the TINY temperature gage is VERY clear. Flying around in my Reverb G2 the sim looked as clear as it does on my monitor. I have a 32x9 Ultrawide display that runs natively at 5120x1440. I am running a super resolution of 7680X2160 as well as using DLAA and it is still giving me silky smooth framerates. The only time I saw slight FPS issues was flying around Baltimore and that was only looking out the side of the aircraft, looking strait ahead it was silky smooth. I have to hand it to you, this was one of the best explanation and tutorial videos on MSFS I have ever seen. You earned my sub sir!
You don't have to put that file into the folder. That is what DLSS Swapper does. Unzip right where it is and use DLSS Swapper to change it. You use DLSS Swapper's Import feature to import the 3.6 version so you can use 3.6.
Thanks yes that’s the programme I meant, ne of your excellent tutorials covered the set up, there so much I would like to ask but probably burden you beyond what’s reasonable! Thanks so much I think we all in the community owe you a debt of gratitude. I am 71 years now and in the day was a flight Engineer on Boeing 707,s for a now liquidated U.K. airline after redundancy due to technology ( two man crews) I went on to set up my own tech consultancy company serving A/C leasing companies/ Airlines etc. Sorry for droning on! Thanks again for all the tutorials . BR Charlie
PS, you guys are gonna laugh. Right after I did this whole thing, there was a beta update. Downloaded the new SU Beta, 1.37.9... and MSFS downgraded my DLSS file to 2.4.12. 😂
Please explain yourself better! I have so much trouble trying to follow you because you tend to jump ALL OVER the place. So, then you had to reinstall the 3.6 dll again, is that what you're saying?
@@Level10Productions As far as I am aware, every time that MSFS 2020 updates, for example SU15 is due out soon, then the MSFS installer will reset the DLSS.dll to it's default, therefore undoing what you have done with the Swapper. So after an MSFS update just run the Swapper again to upgrade the DLSS.dll again.
@IslandSimPilot yes it is. My problem is, I have mine working but I am running on a 4K monitor. What should my Full Screen Res be? My numbers are way up there compared to yours. You are basically using a 2K monitor, right? Which is not a standard. So, Im using mine scaled at one setting (not 2) higher than my 4K screen. Seems to be snappier than if I go all the way to highest res. Then, I set it to balanced, even snappier and I don't notice any real change in quality. I have the nvidia setting texture at highest quality too. They seem to balance well but am I doing it the best way? I want as few stutters and nicest graphics I can get. Am I missing anything? I wish we knew what to set Threaded Optimization to, auto or on.
@@Level10Productionsi did the same thing with my 4k.. Did not turn res all the way up.. Just one notch above 4k and quality setting.. W Looks and performs great..
Another great video and it got me to the best performance yet. I recent purchased a new machine. i9-14900kf and RTX 4070S. I went through your vid several times and ended up with... 1. the new DLSS 3.6 in my sim 2. All of your Nvidia settings 3. In Sim I'm using the DLSS super and DLAA with my native 1440p resolution. On my rig it actually performs and looks better than the DSR settings. All I can say is wow! Settings maxed out and pegged at 60fps, butter smooth. Thanks for efforts!!
I really like and appreciate how comprehensible you can explain all of this, I keep trying it out every once in a while. Although I don’t really have the feeling to perceive any real difference while flying, I get why all of this is technically „better“. What I still can‘t quite get use to with DLSS though is the blurry and ghosting displays in the cockpit (ie Fenix A320). They look so much sharper with TAA for me.
Thanks again Capt. You are my hero when it comes to my flight sim settings, that Holy grail settings is the best. I’m running a RTX 4060 gpu with 8GB VRAM and AMD RYZEN 7 7840HS CPU, using a 165Hz monitor running at 2560x1440 all settings max out, AutoFps, Frame gen mod, and map enhancement, using Ultra Performance works better for me than DLAA really don’t know why but my FPS don’t come under 90, this is just running smooth as butter for me. Thanks a lot again Capt, you are one of the only few out there that are truly sincere when it comes to show your setting exactly the way you run your sim. Hopefully one of these days when you are in the Caribbean (SXM) I’m around there and I could give you a tour onboard my vessel. Keep up the good work and just ignore those negative comments I see from a few people around here calling MSFS2020 just a game or don’t know what. Happy flying Capt
I can’t explain how long I have been racking my brain watching endless videos and tutorials on how to get the sim looking its best without constant ghosting all over the show. YOU SIR ARE A GENIUS! I watched the holy grail video and thought damn it will be outdated with the new dlss and frame gen but OH WOW it was not thankfully I watched this vid too! Seriously thank you! I can finally enjoy my sim on my rtx 4070 ti super i9-149k
Just WOW!, I never thought I could push the quality and performance any more on my RTX2070 super any further until implementing the high quality and DLAA setting after updating DLSS to 6.2, ok I dropped down from 60 - around 55 fps but the improvement in guages and visual quality is outstanding and the feel is much smoother than ever! Thanks for these invaluable videos!!!! 👍👍
Given that the DLSS version seems to only change every few months and it's just one file in one location I'm not sure what the DLSS swappers program adds to the party, especially if it's only MSFS you're concerned with. And you said a couple of times you have to have DX12 enabled for this to work. What specifically are you referring to? I know you need it for Frame Generation, but DLSS Super Resolution and the DSR factors and resolutions work under DX11.
Hello ISP. I want to thank you for your suggestions. I applied them and am greatly delighted by the results. The Stutters and Shimmering are now gone. Also, I've increased the resolution just to tinker, as you suggested and discovered an incredibly higher level of detail without performance issues. Thanks again!!
Absolutely MASSIVE performance improvement. I thought I had pretty decent FPS and imagery before (running the RTX4070; 64GB RAM; 13th gen i7), but did have a few stutters at heavily detailed airports and flying over city scenery add-ons. But now it’s hugely improved. I did switch to DX12 and activate the DLAA instead of having the setting to auto too. It’s not just the FPS improvement I’m seeing, but also image quality improvement. I’ll have to remember to implement this again after SU15 comes out next week.
Guy you should not say DLSS is downscaling - it is upscaling from lower resolution rendering, downscaling is DLDSR - rendering in higher resolution than monitor native. BTW deep learning DSR .
Thanks for the great video!! FYI: I also changed from v3.5.10 to v3.6.0.0. on my RTX3080 and with the holy grail active on 3x 2K Mon. What I did NOT change was my driver 537.58, since this is the last stable driver I know off for this GPU, wich gives me a steady 30FPS AVG. Conclusion: as you mentioned in de video, no big improvement for me, although the G1000 screens actually seem a bit less tearing 🙂
Just getting started with MSFS, will be flying both 2D and VR. You mentioned ‘of course’ you need DX12 - why ? GSYNC ? Yes or no ? Something called resizable BAR - yes, no ? I know - deep in the weeds ! Subscribed !!
@@IslandSimPilotWell I got going today and have MSFS using DLSS 3.7 with the new driver, DX12(beta), and both 2D and VR work spectacularly !😊 Only question left, and I’m not sure if you fly VR, is using OpenXR . I tried using VR with my Pimax Crystal (Pimax XR), without any adjustments and it just worked awesome. I can activate that menu in MSFS with cntl-F2 but I then have to grab a VR controller to do anything with it.
A good tip for VR people who use the Open XR toolkit: There’s a BIG difference in quality and performance between DLSS ‘quality’ and DLSS ‘DLAA’, you can find the middle ground which works best for your system like so: jump into a flight in VR, engage your autopilot so you’re flying straight and level, set DLSS to ‘QUALITY’, open the Open XR Toolkit window (CTL+F2), go to the ‘system’ tab, set ‘override resolution’ to ‘YES’, then adjust your resolution UP until you get the framerate you’re happy with (34-36 etc). You will have to enter/exit vr mode during the process to confirm the setting but that’s it. Yo now have 3 performance/quality options; DLSS Quality and DLSS DLAA, which are set in the sim menu (open xr toolkit override resolution ‘OFF’) , and a third option, perfectly matched to your own setup, which is set by simply changing ‘override resolution’ to yes in Open XR toolkit whilst in DLSS Quality mode. For me, I get about 47fps in DLSS Quality, 29 fps in DLSS DLAA, and 35 in DLSS Quality with override resolution ON which for my system is the best compromise of quality/performance and I can decide which mode I use depending on the type of flight I’m doing. All this works well in DX11 with whichever LOD/TLOD addon you prefer as described on this channel (I personally use SmoothFlight). PLEASE NOTE: you need reasonable performance in DLSS QUALITY mode to start with because as you adjust the resolution up your framerate will naturally drop.
Thanks once again for another very useful guide. This one is the icing on the cake for me. The only thing I do not understand is where you find the time research and produce this stuff.
Yesterday, I had a complete crash of my computer. What failed was the entire Nvidia architecture. What was different about this last crash than the others I've had (and I've had a few), is that system restore did NOT work to fix the problem. I had three different restore points including the last Windows installation and they all failed to reload the graphics drivers. This required a complete wipe of the computer, a clean Windows 11 installation, then the sim. After reloading it, the latest 551.86 Nvidia driver, dlss v3.6, and the precise settings as discussed here. I got it to work and work well. In fact, it works better than it has for some time. There were two things I did differently: First, I upgraded to Windows 11 Pro. Second, I upgraded the dlss driver and the 551.86 together. I am less convinced that the Win 11 Pro was the thing that worked, but I am more convinced the difference was dlss v3.6. What happened yesterday was I was running dlss 3.5.10 and the new 551.86 driver. Since the v3.6 works fine and the v3.5.10 did not, I believe that the combination of the earlier version of dlss just did not work together (using the Holy Grail settings). Your performance may vary, but I strongly recommend --not-- to use dlss v3.5.10 with this latest driver. It very well might crash your computer. On a slightly different subject, I cannot get DLSS Swapper to work. It simply will not detect MSFS 2020 and also will not properly download the dlss file. The alternate means of swapping the dlss file works here, but beware...you really have to be careful. If you don't back it up then overwrite it with the new file, it may corrupt the graphics settings and that will require a complete reinstall of MSFS2020. That would suck.
Gosh I wish I had an idea to give you. I really am at a loss as to what could have caused all that. You said you’ve had this happen before no? Or something similar anyway?
When frame generation is off, enabling in game vsync enables GPU high performance mode (if you don't cap your fps below the vsync fps limit). This leads to better frame time consistency as vsync is the perfect frame rate limiter (on the flip side you will see more stuttering if you cannot maintain vsync frame rate). In game VSync has no effect when Frame Generation is enabled, only NVCP VSync will work, but the issue is MSFS has a broken implementation of frame generation with vsync (it used to work but they broke it somewhere in between). Ideally with Vsync your game fps should be half of your vsync fps cap, but that does not happen, you can enable debug mode display fps and another fps display like RTSS which will display the FPS after frame generation. To make FG work with vsync you have to put an artificial fps cap eg via RTSS / NVCP at your vsync frame rate (just below ~ 0.01 fps below). This is a hack and does not work reliably always. Why would you want vsync with FG, because you can get 60 fps with in game 30 fps and 30 fps is optimized in MSFS for just about no stuttering with ultra settings.
This is already in MSFS now provide you have the latest NVidia driver - am I missing something ? also is lossless scaling recommended with DLSS ? - been out of simming for a while - trying to catch up - thanks
Thank you for the insight here! I am running a 4K resolution setup and perhaps it should be noted that the "holy grail" combo with DSR probably doesn't make sense unless you're on a 1440p or lower setup? My frames dropped 33% after trying DSR 1.78 and that was with DLSS Quality
Awesome video, probably one of the most informative ones on this topic. Can you share the link (as I'm bind) to the video which speaks to moving MSFS from the 'restricted' MS folder to somewhere else. Thank you.
Another good video . Thanks for posting. Question - you posted a video a few weeks ago dealing with your opinion of not having to use DDU anymore when installing a new driver. I can't seem to find it. What was the title? Thanks.
Im struggling to see how people are saying this works in VR..its spectacular in 2D , but in VR, the main 2D display res has no bearing on the VR picture.. try it...set 2D res REALLY low, and see the VR headset quality ...FPS and quality are unchanged as you would expect..(they certainly are for me anyway ! ) For those who ARE seeing a difference in VR...how exactly are you achieving it, and it you reset the 2D display back to low res rather than the DSR settings shown here , does the VR picture change?
So I did this last night, I went from 20FPS to almost 40.I have a 4070 ti super running 4 monitors and the 2 G1000’s setup. So 5 monitors on high. I can’t believe I was at 20 frames and it looked ok to me lol. This is also with a i5 12400f, I think I need to upgrade that. What do you think? Thanks for this!
This maybe a silly question but here goes. Does that AI learning only happen during your current session or is it cumulative over multiple sessions. Should we see improvement over time? I followed the setting closely without high TLOD or OLOD and still get stutters. Also noticed that helicopters and locations put a big hit on performance. I have intel i7 11700F with 16 GB DDR4 and an RTX3060
Not a silly question at all! It's actually all done before we get it. The machine learning is done using NVIDIA supercomputers. They then compile that learning and package it into the DLSS file that we download. So actually it isn't doing any learning during our sessions, it is all done behind the scenes so to speak.
I did the update, but unlike other users, I didn't see any increase (4070Ti super), and the DLSS option in the Sim is gone, only TAA, FXAA etc. are left, how can it be? I went back to 3.5.1
Hey thanks for the guide! I have been getting incrdbile results from using your videos to setup my MSFS on my new PC. I am curious if you have any issues with using DirectX 12? My ground textures keep disapearing or being blurry and it seems to be fixed using DX11, are you aware of a fix for it?
Oh boy, thanks for the video, but I need some help. I have a native 1440p monitor (wide 5120 x 1440p) and trying to find my best settings for both Windows (photo editing) and MSFS 2020 Sim update 15. Should I use DSR for Windows? I have already done that and I am in fact getting 10240 x 2880 (4.00x) at present. That does not mean I will stick to that setting and will likely go back to 7680 x 2120p (2.25x). Hardware: Monitor wide 5120 x 1440p, 120Hz I have a 4090 video card. I have i7 9700K CPU running 4.9GHz. Assuming running Windows at 4.00x, then I get to my MSFS settings. Should I use the following? Select: 7680 x 2160p Anti-Aliasing : Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution (get 3.7) Select: Quality Frame generation: On AMD Sharpening: 100 V-Sync On (120Hz monitor): On - OR SHOULD I TURN THIS OFF ??? HDR10: Shaded to Off Frame Rate Limit: 50% DirectX Version: DX12 The above should give me the Holy Grail? Any comments or suggestions based on the above set-up? I think that it would be wise to maybe use 7680 x 2160p for both Windows and MSFS 2020 when I think about it. That should also do nicely with photo editing. But does it matter if I leave it at 10240 x 2880p for Windows? Or is that just to silly? Can't wait for comments... getting a bit excited here. :)
First: Thanks for all the great posts. All around great videos to follow and learn from.. Second: Get VR. Seriously. Third !!! Not sure where it happened at, but with all currant drivers and updates to everything... My nVidia control panel no longer has DSR as an option. I also show no 'larger then actual' resolutions either in windows or MSFS. I do have Win11 and the new nVidia app(which may be there issue?) Anyway, just thought I'd post that. Bonus Fourth bullet point: Seriously dude. VR :)
Hi, thank you so much for the help and information that you provide in videos like this, it's much appreciated. Regarding the "Holy Grail" method you describe, it doesn't work for me mainly because my system is low-end these days (i9-9900k and RTX 2080Ti) and I need as much performance as I can get to run in 4k, which is my preferred resolution. I instead use DLSS Ultra Quality mode set at .8 upscaling which gives a similar effect to your Holy Grail option (set in Nvidia Inspector) but gives me the extra few FPS that I need. I think is would be useful for your viewers to mention this as an option if the Holy Grail method does not work well, particularly on lower-end systems. BTW, DLSS swapper now has DLSS 3.6 in its list.
Just to clarify. In VR and using Virtual Desktop should I use V.D upscaling settings on or off or use current 2D settings (which are working fine following your excellent video)?
Do you need DSR if you're running MSFS at 4K on a native 4K monitor? I have the LG Flex 42 4K OLED with a RTX 4070 card. My resolution is fantastic with it...
Very quick question all look good, however with DSR enabled in Full Screen mode do we select the full screen resolution ie my native is 2560x1440 now when click on the resolution tab we have the 2 greater ones in there do we select the 3840x2160 to get the 2.25 upscale or leave it at 2560x1440 and it does it automatic. Great content this my friend its a game changer.
Followed everything you're talking about perfectly up until the point you didn't mention Frame Generation... Are you able to use the old Frame Generation "hack" for none RTX 40 cards with DLSS 3.6? The person that created that "hack" hasn't bothered to update that file on Nexus Mods since January (version 0.90).
Just as a point of clarity, I have 3.6 installed with FG (set up from your previous video) but I am only seeing around 60 frames in the sim were before I was seeing double that. FG shows in the sim and is on. Am I missing something?
Any word on why I don't see the two DSR options in the global settings of my NVIDIA control panel? I mean, I have a 4k monitor with a 4090 here. Why are they not showing up?
Apparently it's not supported with DCS on DP1.4.. so in other words, you need to give up your 144hz at 4k to get it to work, assuming your monitor can even disable DCS without shifting all the way down to DP1.2. Mine isn't that sophisticated, unfortunately.
Hello Island Sim Pilot, Charlie here from UK, iI guess this may bea silly question, do you use the microsoft auto frame rate modification at the same time when the frame rate genration is enabled and set up?. Thanks Charlie
Hi I have a 43" 4K samung TV . Will this still work following your video? What about VR same settings? Thanks for this video. Just found you this morning. I willstart coming back to you.
great for flat screen but what do i do with vr? do i turn everything down/off in sim pc settings and do this in vr settings? confusion because i only fly in vr (like many) and while i love your videos its confusing what to do because you are not mentioning vr like you sometimes do. if you could clarify thanks
So you are saying that DLAA will give better quality than TAA when running a 4090 at 4K Full Ultra, DX12 and Frame Generation (when the dllsg file is available)? Any FPS hit. 14900KS at 5.9GHz all core in FS2020.
thanks for the video! so as you mentioned DLAA is a even better antialiasing, can I also use it when I use the DSR factors? or do I have to stick to DLSS quality with this one?
My issue with this is just that whenever I enablee DLSS+DLAA, I keep getting one specific issue where it works fine and dandy and has the best framerates of any setting, but then about 5 mins into the sim, I will get this insane stop/start tearing almost like a powerpoint but you're changing the slides extremely slowly. It is an absolute dealbreaker and I havent found a fix for it. TAA for me for now because DX12 just has so many issues with bugs that it's not worth my time anymore. I cannot do another 5+ hour flight only to have it crash on me because of the instability of DX12.
It's all gone so horribly wrong! I have followed the instructions, Dlss swapper installed 3.6 Nvngx_dlss.dll installed and get good frame rates but, I also get a slight shimmering around the aircraft when panning, only when panning and a little in my cockpit. I can live with it, but it is annoying, especially the shimmer in pan/outside mode. However, I like to use the Nvidia Geforce Experience Filters, but when I turn this on all hell is let loose and I get really shitty unplayable frame rates. Please! What can I do to enable the filters and retain the good frame rates that I currently get without the filters on. Any help with the shimmering when panning would be appreciated too! Thanks for all your help.
One thing you can try is updating to the new NVIDIA app. Do you have the latest driver installed? BUT it is in beta, be aware of that. I use the new app with the simple Dynamic Vibrance and it looks great, but I’ve never really used the filters.
Really amazed at the results I'm getting when this works - but I have noticed that I sometimes am getting an error that wasn't cropping up before: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG which is happneing on my 4090. Is this common, is anyone else having similar issues at all?
hm... I'm currently running all of islandsimpilot's suggestions with DSR, DLSS (quality) and I have frame gen on. when I set the seconrady scaling from 1 to 2, it gives me really bad performance. but I will give it another try.@@AdventuresWithPennyLane
ok, can't get this to work. and as I'm reading through other posts where users set this to 0.7 or 0.8 to gain significant fps boosts, I don't find it too strange that it has a negative impact when I double that value to 2. I think I will keep it a 1, but thanks for the idea.@@AdventuresWithPennyLane
Excellent show as usual, thanks to your suggestions I'm now getting a solid 60 fps. flight sim will not stay at full screen keeps changing back to window in spite of ALT + ENT or saving it in the graphic setting any way to keep it in the full screen . thanks for all the great help you have given us.
The "windowed" thing is a bug (or some say a deliberate thing for easy access to desktop if game hangs on loading or updating) since the last game update, hope Asobo will rectify this in next update.
Excellent video! Can you please provide the link on how to move the MSFS2020 from the windows apps folder into the XBOX games folder? Thank you so much!
Strange! I dont get any of those higher resolution settings in the sim, even though I activated those DSR factors in NV CtrlPanel. Only My 2560x1440. Any Idea any one? Thanks!
@@IslandSimPilot Thank you for replying!, and your great vids!. Yes Sir! I do! :) The only way I can get a higher res setting is to create a custom res in Nvidia Cpl! Everything installed incl Drivers are the latest. Strange.. I will Have to search through all settings.
After i installed dlss and applied holy grail to my msfs i got a big 20fps boost, from 20 to 40, but everytime i close msfs and come back on its like my settings disappeared and im back at 20 fps with the holy grail and dlss
My Windows install is not as you described (in the XboxGames Folder). I don't have an XboxGames folder. Where is the link you said would be in the description on how to fix my installation? Thanks for the great videos.
