Ya vas lyublyu
I love you beyond measure (Yeletsky's aria)
Tchaikovsky: Queen of Spades
I love you dear, beyond all measure.
I think of you by day and night,
For you my life Id lay down gladly, for you against the world Id fight,
Yet hear me, child, your heart shall keep its freedom
Your life to mine I will never chain
I could renounce you, for your own sake,
And trample down my jealous pain.
For you, for you, all things were easy.
Not only as my wife Id love you,
Of your least wish Id be the slave,
I long to be your friend and guardian, tender to cherish and to save!
I think my eyes for love of you were blinded,
But now at last, the truth is clear,
To you I seem a kindly stranger,
You would not have me draw too near!
O, let me break these cruel barriers, I feel for you with all my heart,
But yet no comfort can I give you,
while thus you grieve and weep apart.
O, let me break these cruel barriers, I feel for you with all my heart.
I love you, dear, beyond all measure.
I think of you by day and night.
For you my life Id lay down gladly,
For you against the world Id fight!
O dearest heart, confide in me!
Alternative translation, sent by Iamsalgado:
You are sad, dear,
As if you have grief
Wait just a moment!
I must, must say to you!
I love, love you without bonds.
And cant imagine living a day without you,
A feat of unparalleled prowess.
Im prepared to perform right now on your behalf,
But know this: I dont wish to restrict
The freedom of your heart.
In order to please, I am prepared to vanish from you
And to douse the flame of jealous feelings.
Im prepared to do anything, anything for you!
Id like to be not just a loving spouse-
A servant, useful sometimes,
But your friend as well
And always a consoler!
But I clearly see, now I feel,
How much my dreams misled me,
How little you have faith in me,
How remote I am to you!
Oh. I am distressed by the distance; I feel for you
with my entire heart,
I feel your grief,
And cry with your tears.
Oh, Im distressed by the distance,
I feel for you with my entire heart,
I love you without bounds,
And cannot imagine living a day without you,
Im prepared to perform for you
A feat of unparalleled prowess.
Oh my darling, trust me!

Such a wonderful performance. Thanks for sharing. So sad when I heard about his passing. I sang at the Met for a few years, and while I never performed with him, I shared elevator rides and passed him many times in the hallways. He always had a smile, handshake, or a quick joyful greeting. Everyone there, and in the whole opera world loved him, and he is terribly missed.

After watching Dmitri for over 2 years and mourning over his death, I can truly say he inspired me to pursue vocal performance in opera as a baritone. I’m only 17 so I have a lot of ground to cover, but I hope to someday be like him. I’m learning his technique through reading books and of course watching videos like this, and through training with my vocal coach. Someday I wish to be anywhere near his greatness.

best wishes for your dream, he is truly the shining star on opera stage, from his height and look, his voice technique and personality, passion for art, how and when can we find another man or woman on the stage like Dmitri! ...

So many of us are still mourning over his death. A tragedy. When he sang I could feel it vibrate in my heart. Dmitri said that the voice was there but that his teachers taught him how to feel. So, your work will be to find a bel canto opera voice builder and someone who will work with you internally to connect you emotionally with your core. I think what made him great was more than the technique. It was his ability to emotionally embody everything he sang. Much luck to you and hope to see you singing your heart out.

His technique is just perfect. Including phrasing and clarity of words. Some people have great sound but at the same time you cannot read the text. Dmitri has both. Great sound, perfect pitch and pronunciation.

Maybe in regard to his Verdi roles. He has the timbre but not the size of a Verdian baritone voice. I think if he had developed his lower register more he could have been louder.

Yes, his accent in the meaning of "pronunciation" (as we, Russians, usually understand only a foreign accent by that) is Standard Russian, an analogue of Queen's English. This topic is poorly described because Russian is perhaps the only language in comparison with others which is practically the same on the huge territory. I've never heard him speak with any touch of a foreign accent. Some people just presume it if someone lives abroad but don't actually hear it. I think it's just the case.

Great performance! Bravo Hvorostovsky! I'm Russian. I think that both translations are in general right. But I guess that "beyond measure" is closer. I would translate it just "I love you immensely". His pronunciation is perfect in the best Russian music school traditions! For very educated people there is no such thing as "a regional accent". Russian is very different from other languages in this respect. Not like regional accents of e.g. English, German or Italian.

Thank you! I haven't had time for it recently, but I must move with it, the exam period is approaching, and the first year students might want to look at it. I'd actually like to be a language coach in opera. Yup, 22 :-) In both "lyu", I hear a clear "u" sound. The "l" and "y" seem to me to merge into one sound ("y"-ized "l", a.k.a. palatalized alveolar lateral approximant :-) )

As always five stars for Dmitri and six star for frufruJ for such a painstaking and generous job-I would ask you a favor, if possible: to put in western europe aphabet the first verse: Я вас люблю, люблю безмерно My cyrilic reading is simply awful these days... THx again--Luiz

Luiz, thank you, but you are really unjust! :-) It's not *that* painstaking, at least compared to singing! I'm glad when people like my videos. The first verse is: Ya vas lyublyu, lyublyu bezmyerna The translation is nice, but rather loose. If anybody can provide a more literal version, I'll happily add it to the description.

Thank you for your comment. I'm actually a phonetician, but the topic of Russian regional accents is very poorly described on Wikipedia, and I didn't find any other sources. Can his accent be compared to the "Queen's English"? I've heard some people complain that he has received a foreign accent, but I can't hear anything...
@frufruJ
@frufruJ 15 лет назад
I'd love to, but I don't have it. I'll have to write down the subtitles from the Petersburg concert with Netrebko, even though I don't like that one the best. If anybody has a better translation, please, post it.

Is there any reason why there are so few differences on such a huge area of the Russian speaking countries? Look at England, where there are so many accents and dialects on such a small area...
@frufruJ
@frufruJ 15 лет назад
Well, the last word is the most troublesome. I don't actually speak Russian, but the "e" is actually "ie", and the pronunciation varies, depending on the position in the word and on regional accent of Russian. Maybe somebody who knows the language can explain more?
@lamsalgado
@lamsalgado 15 лет назад
True frufruJ. As far I have noticed, Russian phonetics is strongly context sensitive as most languages. For example (I don´t know if this hapens only in "sang lyrics") but Dmitri pronounces the first Lyu of lyublyu as y or "ee" in english. The second Lyu he pronouces as "blu" in italian. My M.Doctor, born in Belgrad, was surprised. Whether Dima really pronounces the 2nd lyu with a very short "y" as to be almost impercetible or not. Nice blog of yours! Only 22 really? Already great!
