This is indeed a fantastic, memorable performance of Hummel's wonderful piano concerto. Everything is there: engagement, technique, passion, refinement, excellent audio and video recording, and much more. A performance which I might call "perfect", as we all know it's almost impossible for us humans to produce something "more perfect" than this. A big thank you to Maestro Pletnev and Dmitry Shishkin for having elevated Hummel's music where it belongs. Chapeau!
Shishkin is beyond glorious. With maestro Pletnev on the podium, he makes Hummel's masterpiece soar to the highest echelons of brilliance, passion & drama. A performance from Mount Olympus..❤ I have revisited this performance many times, and never cease to marvel at the grandeur it exudes. 💐💐💐
The cinematography is first-rate here, BUT... to give credit where credit is due: you guys are extolling the work of the editor. This Hall is absolutely loaded with cameras! They’re everywhere & hidden - completely unobtrusive; you can sometimes see one or another of them parked on an unnoticed ledge or hanging from railing (they’re not very big). So the genius keeping our visual focus on the “important parts” of the music is the editor who’s taken all those visual sources and intercut them as you see here. Not to detract from the excellent cinematography & direction, mind you; you can see that in the very tasteful use of zooms and pans.
@@heinzobermite4831 well... agreed, BUT other important concert halls like the Berliner Philharmonie in Berlin is also loaded with cameras and rarely they do good editing...
@@heinzobermite4831 you might be right! I thought this was a live performance, which means that someone is making the decision on which camera shot to choose.
Holy smokes, this piece is a technical BEAST! And as expected, Dmitry Shiskin has more than exceeded our expectatations - what a dedicated, selfless, joyous performance of this wildebeast of a concerto! Sensitive, molto expressivo, and frankly a blessing to us all -
I don't know how many times I have seen this video (or listened to it when I am outside). For maybe 1,5 years I always turn back and think this is the greatest concert I have ever heard. The composition is - like most of Hummel's - so lively, dignified, and elegant. But this performance of Dmitry Shishkin as maybe the best pianist of our days really leaves me speachless and shaking at certain moments even though I have heard it dozens of times. It is just incredible how beautiful this is.
Whoever was in charge of the camerawork for this performance, thank you from the bottom of my heart for filming Shishkin‘s hands during the fast and furious fingerwork in the outer movements’ codas. Too many recordings of fast sections either focus on the soloist’s expressions or the orchestra which is everything that is besides the point!
If Mikhail Pletnnev approves then there'sno doubt it was a great performance... hearing this work for the first time it only makes me wonder why Hummel remains this top order composer who is under represented. The orchestra and soloist did him proud here and will help the cause. Bravo Dmitry!
It is wonderful to at last watch a performance of this piece rather than just hear it. The piano part is fiendishly difficult but to see it performed gives one a sense of just how difficult it is.
I'm completely blown away by Hummel's music. Why he is not treated as one of the giants of this style of music is leaving me speechless and at a loss for a viable explanation.
In the words of Sir Stephen Hough (who made arguably the most important recording of these concerti) "they're wonderful pieces and very important historically, but [when looking for new interpretative inspiration] you're not going deep into the piece because there isn't a deepness to go into - but when you're revisiting Brahms, Beethoven... it's just infinite."
@@subplantantI revisit the Hough recording from time to time (the best version I have heard so far.) Even if Hough thinks there is no deepness, it’s deep enough for me, as a listener, to keep on listening to it. As I listen, this is indeed a very nice version! I save it for later.
I love watching him play. He has to be one of the most facially expressive pianists I have ever seen! And the way his hands/fingers fly over the keys...ye gads!
Amazing on every level,Hummel is a great composer and needs to be heard more I’m so jealous of the pianist’s hands to say nothing of his musicality and dedication,
Hummel is indeed pure joy to listen to - and this is a remarkably fine performance! Bravo to all! A complete set of the Hummel Concertos with this fine pianist & Orchestra would be box-set worth owning and enjoying.
Fantastic, Brilliant, performent Thank you for your kindness to let us to hear this beautiful concerto no.2 , live, Most importantly your Excellent skill and the expression of this wonderful. concerto. is priceless. Thank. you all the best. to you and your music.
I love the overhead shots showing Dmitry's phenomenal technique. His elegant hands with their daddy long leg fingers melt into and explode the keyboard at the same time. It's inspiring to see Hummel performed at this level. BRAVO!
How beautiful Hummel is! Amazing, Dmitry!! Bravo!!! Keep on going with beautiful fingers and hands.. please be healthy, okay? You are an art! Thank you.
BRAVISSIMO The most beautiful of Hummel's concertos, in my opinion his masterpiece, magnificently performed by D. Shishkin accompanied by the great M. Pletnev. Great art! BRAVISSIMO
Dmitriy, I can't stop listening... you stole my heart. You have an incredible talent - I wish you continue on your journey as a pianist. I'm so happy to discover you!
@@penniesfromheaven9724 oh, yes, he to is a rising star. But my heart resonates with Dima's performance and interpretation. Brilliant all over. Another pianist that's absolutely #1 on my list is Alexei Sultanov. Genius! He passed away due to brain tumor way too early.
Both the Concerto and the Pianist are new to me. What a wonderful discovery. I love the Hummel and simply spellbound by the delicacy of Mr D.M. Thank you, thank you!
Dmitry is a wonder. Beauty of tone, nuance and sensitivity with an astounding technique. He is one of the finest young pianists of our time. Pletnev is a sensitive accompanists who does not feel it is necessary to play to the camera. Hummel looks back to Mozart and Beethoven and forward to Chopin. Beautiful piece and performance.
A beautiful and inspirational performance, in my humble and unlearned view, of one of the best 19th Century piano concertos. I first heard the concerto in a somewhat truncated performance on the Vox Turnabout label by Martin Galling but it was Stephen Hough who revealed its best in his famous Chandos recording. Apart from an oddly relaxed introduction, especially in comparison to the dramatic contrasts delivered by Bryden Thompson and the ECO (for Stephen Hough) this performance was a delight to see as well as hear.
Felicitaciones! Bendiciones! Desde México.
Dimitri has put Hummel on the map. He is playing on a beautiful piano, it has a lovely bright tone but never harsh and beautifully tuned. I didn't think it was a Steinway at first but eventually the camera picked up the name. I love the conductor too, and the flute player is a delight to watch and what an amazing sound. One of the finest performances ever. So many gifted people coming together to create such beauty for my edification.
The piece is lovely, Mr. Shishkin brilliant and sparkling in his playing. The flute player however ... seems to have gone to the William Shatner school of acting for musicians who want to express their feeling for their music via body language. Every time the camera was on him I found myself laughing out loud. It really took away from his playing.
@@samtook3368 Agree. And I think Thompson and the ECO provide a far more articulated accompaniment than pletnev and his band here. Hough had enormous courage and art to assay this thing what? Nearly 30 years ago now..not to mention the b minor concerto Hough did. Be nice to hear Shishkin do that one too.
When I first heard his C major concerto, firstly I thought it sounded like Mozart. Then after a few bars there was the drama of Beethoven. Shortly after I heard Chopin. Absolutely wonderful music that is very under rated.
I’ve always said that Hummel was the link between Mozart & Chopin: he took what he learned as Mozart’s only student, expanded that and then, Chopin was clearly influenced by his music & expanded upon that even more... and yes, Beethoven. There was a bit of a rivalry between Beethoven & Hummel that eventually grew into reconciliation & mutual respect, to the point that Ludwig had willed that Hummel perform musical improvisations at Beethoven’s Memorial Concert. It was there that he met Schubert who was so taken with him that he, in fact, dedicated his final three sonatas to Hummel but, by the time it came for them to be published, both of those composers had died & so, the publisher took it upon himself to ignore Schubert’s wishes & dedicated the 3 to Robert Schumann, who was still alive at the time... There’s a marvelous recording by the Capricorn Ensemble of two Hummel (piano) septets & another by the Nash Ensemble of Piano Quintets of Hummel & Schubert, all on Hyperion, that cannot be recommended enough if you enjoyed this Hummel concerto performance.
Hearing this concerto is a revelation to me because you can hear where Chopin drew his ideas and inspiration from, not only is the piano writing and filigree the same, so is the orchestra writing and harmonys. Chopin played Hummels concertos as well. Hummel is the missing link I didn't realize existed before hearing this great performance.
I first heard Hough playing Hummel on the radio years ago. Immediately loved the 1st movement. Couldn't believe the entire concerto was just as good. Hough's performance is amazing. No reason to choose. I love Dmitry also.
