This video shows you how to create a model of DNA using a paper towel roll, markers, and glue. This should work for most middle school science courses or a standard high school biology class.
If this video helped your please leave me a comment.

What an amazing video you produced to help us more clearly understand the DNA double helix. Most especially, the fact that you used inexpensive items to create this learning model is commendable. I am a 72-year-old retired middle school educator. After retiring and relocating, I spearheaded an all-volunteer after-school tutoring/enrichment program for elementary and middle school students in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We are a partnership of civic organization, church, and school division. This is the 11th year we have provided this service, and in that time, I have written 500+ lesson plans. In the plans, which we call Plan of the Day (POD), we augment the teacher's academic program. Always searching for more effective ways of providing meaningful learning, I spend a substantial amount of time exploring the internet. Your video is spot on on what I think will help our scholars understand DNA and the helix model. I am grateful there are creative and caring teachers who explore such means of motivating students to learn about and appreciate science. I cannot wait to demonstrate this model w/ our Spring Forward scholars. A sincere thank you, Mr. Hamilton. JDP

I am a student in the Kailua county in Honolulu Hawaii. My teacher assigned us a project that required us to make a DNA structure. Today is my last day to work on it, as tomorrow we have school. This really saved my ass, and will most likely bump my grade up because its graded as a test/ assignment. Thank you for doing what you teachers do.

This video saved our butts because my son missed school the day this project was assigned and had to build this really quick without any supplies on hand. Just a tip that worked for us- We kept having our ladder flatten out, so I used paper clips to stick the "rungs" on which allowed us to adjust them until we got the angle right. Then it was just a matter of sticking it together.

Great demo. Thank you. There are some very ponderous methods shown on the Internet and some inaccurate ones. Yours is easy to follow and appears to create an accurate model fairly easily.

Thx so much! My daughter attempted to make a double helix with pipe cleaners, and it turned out quite messy. She recreated this one, and it looks spectacular! She's looking for an A+! I think she'll not be disappointed!

Make sure that you have your tabs on the bases folded in opposite directions. Then glue them in a vertical alignment. The will seem a little strange because the surface phosphates will be at an angle. Imagine how it will hang, with the bases vertical and the supra phosphates wrapping around.

Great model and it doesn't take a lot oftime. I 've made my first model which was quite good and I spent a few hours on doing it, but it was made wrongly. Now I'm doing this model and I'm sticking basepairs to double helix. I think I 'll suprise my Biology teacher when I show her my 2nd model. We 'll see, first I'm going to finish it. Thanks a lot. PS. I'm from Lublin in Poland.

Hey! I am a student from Bangladesh and I saw your video. The problem I'm facing is the replacement for a manilla folder (apart from the cardboard cereal box as that didn't work out for me). And could you please show me the full steps of sticking the base pairs to the pole-nucleotide strands as I faced problems there too. But I got the rest all good and you really did a nice job. Thanks.
