Hey guys, getting potato plants huge is crucial to get a great harvest. Here's what you can do now to grow bigger potato plants. I also tell you what you need to do to protect your potatoes. Thanks for watching.
Hey everybody, my potatoes got off to a rocky start, but hopefully, they'll turn out fine. Giving them a nitrogen boost is a good way to ensure a great harvest. Thanks for watching.
I sound worse than I feel, but whatever I got doesn't want to go away. You guys work and take care of a family, so we're in the same boat. There's never enough time. Wouldn't have it any other way, lol.
Great tips here, Jon. Potatoes are so much fun to grow. I’ve been watching my Russet experiment (using 1 sprout in one bucket vs 2 sprouts)…to see if I get bigger potatoes from one sprout. So far, the buckets with one sprout have the same vigorous top growth as the ones with two. In fact, for a while the growth was taller. They’re now even…can’t wait to see how it goes. Hope you’re feeling better! Blessings to you…
That sounds like a really cool experiment. I tried to plant everything with no more than 2 eyes. I didn't mention it in the video but I also planted them a little farther apart than last year, about 20 inches instead of 18 just to see if they would get bigger. I'm looking forward to hearing how yours come out. I hope your garden is doing great.
Thank you, I have messed up on all 3 topics over the years and thought this might help someone. I hope your potatoes turn out great and the rest of your garden. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.
First time growing any potatoes. I started leaving potatoes out of fridge, but in basement. Both yukons and russetts started sprouting. Univ. of Georgia extension service says russetts don't do good in Georgia, so I had 5 yukons that I planted 8" deep in some leaf mold (mostly) that had broken down. I loosened the soil around where I planted them so they can spread. They are over a foot tall now. I did put some miracle grow on them a couple of weeks ago. What state are you in?
Phil, for your first time, it sounds like you're doing pretty good. The leaf mold is great, but keep an eye on it. If it breaks down too much, your potatoes might become exposed to the sun. I love to hear from people trying new things in the garden, and I hope it works out great for you. I live in West Central Indiana on the Illinois border. Loved the comment. Thanks for watching.
Working overtime and being sick…. It sux that that’s the way we have to live life in order to survive. I’ve spent way too much time thinking about how we humans have designed our lives. This is not how life should be… I want the trade and barter system & living off the land….. but I guess we trade and barter our time and labor for printed paper. I hope you have an awesome harvest
I agree with you, we work our lives away wishing we were doing something else. I don't think this is how it should be either. Great comment and I hope you have a great harvest as well.
I cut the larger Kennebeks and Yukon Golds to scab over. In two days the exposed skin was black. Sent pics to the University Ag dept. They said throw them away. Had to buy more and was also expensive. I don't think I am going to let them scab over anymore.. Will cut when I can immediately put them in when it is not as cool and damp. Thanks Joe in R. i.
Joe, sorry to hear that. So you think cool damp weather caused it? Thanks for sharing.Your comment might save this from happening to someone else. Thanks for watching.
Well,I hope the potatoes you planted do great. No matter how long we've been gardening, there's always something new that happens. It's frustrating sometimes, but it's always exciting.
Something kept eating my potato leaves down to the stalk. Anyone know what this would be? I only plant a few, for fun, every year. Something almost always eats them, to tell you the truth, but this year was the first time it ate the leaves. I moved them into a circle of wire bin meant to hold leaves, in about a foot of chopped leaves, same thing. The only creature I saw in the bin was a long, brown millipede sort of creature.
I'm not sure what's eating them, but I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I used dish soap mixed with water and neem oil. It seemed to help. Thanks for watching.
@@jonbussey5353 Okay, thank you. I just read that the Colorado potato beetle does this kind of damage, but I have not seen any of them around. Neem oil seems to be the recommendation. Water, dish soap and neem oil, I will try it.
