@shirlentsu 发noyami If i work at company, and the job that i really want,i will work 12 hours happily, but mostly people work to make living,so why force someone to work unhealty?
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realise that working 9 to 9 6 days a week is not sustainable. If people are single and that passionate about their work than why not, but if you're wanting a worklife balance, which most of us are, then this is not going to work. On top of that, you need to consider that the commuting time to and from work could easily add another 1.5 or more hours. If you're getting home about 10pm then what time left do you have left for yourself your your partner or family? Very little
@shirlentsu 发noyami I work from 10 am to 6 pm for 6 days. Sometimes till 7 pm. And I've a problem working extra hours if I'm not paid for extra hours. This isn't because I'm lazy but i have no time for myself. Working 6 days is already tired and stressed so who one earth will work 996.It's like torturing our health. I'm in my notice period cause I'm tired of working 6 days and my health isn't good. Looking for company who works only 5 days haha!
Sounds like slave labour to me. Jack Ma was not in such a taxing job before he founded alibaba, what a load of crap he is now trying to pitch to the labour market
Marg "Jack Ma was not in such a taxing job before he founded alibaba, what a load of crap he is now trying to pitch to the labour market" Actually he was. Every single successful founder on average works 70 hours+ a week
yeah jack is trying to shove this down young peoples throats because it suits his interests. 996 should never be a "norm", it should be only optional for people who are into their career.
@@yerri5567 I get everyone need to work very hard to achieve something big in their life, but you won't achieve that working from 996, if you can't put your mind into something else you won't progress further, you will be a machine working for a company. They had an plan to achieve on which they put more than 70+hrs a week.
@@yerri5567 Yeah, okay. But these founders are working on their careers and something they enjoy and get a sense of achievement out of it. Then it's barely something you find boring or taxing. We're talking about mindless drone jobs where your labor is being used and cheaply extracted by money-hungry bosses.
@@yerri5567So you are comparing people that make millions and work long hours to people earning minimum wage? Let's see how motivated would you be to work 70+ hrs a week on minimum wage
This. The mindset of a founder is total different than employee. For a founder, in the initial stage you may very well work 70hrs/week BUT that's your choice as a founder. As an employee, that's not really healthy or even efficient.
Provided you sleep 7 hours a night on average that still gives you 5 hours daily for doing what you want, and ofc an entire day at the end of the week.
@@Proximate1 lol go work 7 days a week if you're so inclined and brainwashed, most sane people know they are already over worked with no free time left for themselves
there is an old Chinese saying "Those who stand on their toes indeed stand taller, but they can't stand that way for long". working in 12 hour shifts indeed can increase productivity, for a while. but it won't be long until the workers feel fatigued. i myself work as a freelance illustrator and regularly self-impose this 12 hour working hours a day for a year, and now i revert back to 8 working hours a day.
So true.. I had to leave my job just because my health went bad and I was frequently on sick leave. I had to travel 4 hours a day and then come home do household chores. It took the life out of me. I am trying something nearby and hopefully I won't stay unemployed for long.
Asian Boss, insightful and well-done video as always! Please keep up the great work! I just wish our entire society stops caring about money and material things, as the priority. What's really important is to be healthy and to enjoy the life you have, with precious people around you. What's the point of wasting the time (that we won't have back) in the office, or earning loads of money, if we lose our health, then everything is meaningless, no matter how much fortune you may have. I wish that we live a life that fulfills us from the inside.
I've met entreprenuers in real life who've spent 14-16 hours working for some of their first jobs or starting up their businesses. For them grabbing the experience and networking is invaluable for them but few can do it. Really it's up to you but for regular employee's it's infeasible
For me it would only be sustainable if I absolutely loved what I did, had a personal chef/cleaner, personal shopper, and maybe had a long lunch break so I could work out during the day. Oh, and I assume if accrue vacation hours more quickly too since I’d be working so much?
Health! Finally people are noticing that burning a candle at both ends and the middle will contribute to an early death. Working 30 hours a week is much healthier with plenty of money to live comfortably while living an extra 30 to 40 years. YES, 30 -40 year longer lifespan to enjoy the richness of Life, Love & Joy. Nobody looks back and says "I wish I worked harder and longer hours. "
As a 22 year old Male living in the United States , working for a big company ... I would prefer to work 5 days a week , as many hours as possible ( 8+ hours daily ) .. in reality its true most of us work 5 days on average in a week , 40hours a week ( had one job 6 days a week doing construction 12hours a day & I loved it just wish I had 2 days off ) .. my company & many more are real strict here on the overtime hours & keeps tracks of everyone overtime & if one exceeds 40hr they will send you home early so you won't pass 40hr to get overtime which is upsetting most of the timd for those who depend & work hard to earn that overtime .. I believe this work ethic is great because no one is being force nor should they ever be to work somewhere, so I believe companies shouldn't imply this only towards those who wish to work more for a higher income
My parents work 976 (9am to 7pm 6days a week, every two weeks. So in some weeks it will be 975)... and I was worried... cuz their employees are like 965...
When I was on OJT (which is recommended so that you can actually graduate in college). I wake up at 5:30am and work start at 7:30 am until 4:30pm but my innovator force me to have an overtime until 10:00pm at Monday/ Wednesday/Friday. I can't say I don't wanna since I wouldn't want them to treat me rough at work hours.
How about average working time in Japan? Actually, for Jack Ma, pay a person 72 hours equals one person 40 hours and a 32 hours, what’s difference? Difference is those people are salary payments, not hourly.
996 is currently THE trend in China 🇨🇳. It has many economic advantages, but surely isn't the healthiest thing to do. The problem is that in the West and in the East it is REQUIRED to do the 996 method to survive in the big market.
996 principle is only benecial to Business owners. They don't care about how exhausted their workers are, they only care about money. Like what that guy said "We work to live, so if your life is just to work. It's meaningless."
This 996 deal is unsustainable in a country like China. There's literally billions of people there and many of them could use jobs. Cramming all the work onto a few people and making them work 6 days a week will decrease their productivity, it's better to hire the triple of the workers instead.
To be fair, that applies much more to Western(ised) millennial employees. When the norm around you is overwork, you won’t necessarily see it as such a big problem in comparison, despite not liking it.
Those 3 women that are for the 996, come off cold and heartless, and it's sad that they agree on this theory. Most of them are developing health problems, mental stress, no life, can't spend time with family.......I mean their total existence is to work these long hours with no " me time outlet". This is crazy.
If you really love your job even 996 is unhealthy a body is not made for doing 12h the same thing over and over! I'm glad many chinese people understand that!

I worked in retail 6 days a week for 48 hours in one company. In other company 6 days a week for 50 hours sometimes it can extend until 70 hrs a week (with no rest days). Jack Ma is a 21st century warlord. I certainly hope there are enough Chinese workers who will resist him. First there were the emperors, then there was Mao...now there's Jack Ma.
Don't compare Ma Yun with Mao, Ma Yun is not worthy. Mao was a poet, a military strategist, a statesman, and a revolutionary. His biggest mistake is the Cultural Revolution, but in other respects China cannot live without him. Jack Ma is dispensable, he can be replaced, he is just a lucky businessman.
As of 2021 Jack Ma has been rebuked by the Chinese government and 996 is now illegal there as well. The Chinese paramount leaders will never share power with the wealthy. They will make examples of anyone who tries to buy political influence or usurp power (i.e. Jack Ma and Chinese tech firms). American politicians should take the lesson on what real power looks like.

I think that 6 hours are already enough, or at least 8 hrs not in a row. You work less but harder, then you have the rest of the day to improve your brain, body and soul with different activities. Young people need more social experience to grow their civil, ethic and humanity skills, they do not need more working hours. The absence of a personal life also hightly affect your job, so you can do it for a short period of time. In Italy we still have 8 hrs of work fortunately :)
