Do Apple AirTags work on the Underground?

Apple have a new product out, the 'AirTag' for you to attach to your keys, bag, backpack ... anything that you might be prone to losing, and then lets you track where it is so that you can find your lost item again - but does it work (using the Underground's Wi-Fi) if you lost something deep underground on the platform of a Tube station? Only one way to find out ...
Thanks to my tech friend David McClelland for helping with this! www.davidmcclel...

Apple air tags use Bluetooth only. They connect to any apple device nearby through the ‘Find My’ Network and send location data back to your phone via other devices. It was moving along with him through his devices and anyone nearby as they passed him. No Wi-fi built in.

Great experiment! I wonder if offline iPhones still relay locations of AirTags they’ve found once they regain their network connection (meaning this would work even without one being on Wi-Fi). Seems like they would. It will be interesting to see how this system evolves over time, and whether vertical location (subway vs. street level) can be more accurately reflected.

You need to do the same, now that you know it works, with an Apple Air Tags on a moving train. I'd love to see if that works and whether you as an expert London Underground user could catch up to it and find it!!! That would be a better test as I think you're more likely to lose things whilst on the actual tube train. Obviously it would only be able to send updates as it got to stations s people used their iPhones there, but it'd still be a good test and great fun, no?

FYI it takes 15 minutes before an Airtag will provide its first update on the Find My network. Also it’s not technically showing it’s location, it’s reporting the location of the device that connected to it. I’m my experiments with one before attaching them to my bikes, I attached one to a service cabinet near to a dual carriageway and when it reported back the location was on the road. It wasn’t on the road but the devices in passing vehicles were. But it still provides a close enough location to then use the audio, or in the case of iPhones with a U1 chip, accurate directions to it.

Fun video, and answered a question I bet we all had! In practice, when we lose things in real life we retrace our steps in our minds. You'd know if you had been to Bank, which platforms you'd used etc, or if you'd had a coffee in a cafe on Lombard Street instead. You then just go back to where you'd been cause you now know that's where your keys are. If someone has stolen your stuff, that's a different story, which is why these aren't sold as anti-theft devices.

To address you're very last point it makes a bit of a mockery of the fact Hermes make a leather airtag holder that costs £399!! So suddenly your lost keys, that in themselves are worthless to anyone but you, become highly desirable thanks to the expensive bauble it's attached to!

Guys, on your last point at the end of the video. You don’t get the precise pinpoint location of your lost item at first. Just approximately the whereabouts. The idea is that you move yourself with your phone to that location (which is approximate) and then when you are close enough in a range of Bluetooth then you get instructions on your phone how to locate with with a pinpoint accuracy. You could have made this a bit more interesting by hiding the keys somewhere in the station, but I know how that would have looked to other people when you would wonder around the station trying to locate something. And no, you do not need to be on the same WiFi network. You don’t need to be concerned to WiFi at all for that matter , any other means of being connected to the Internet would do the trick. You could be in Antarctica connected to a satellite Internet and it will work. Just an iDevice near by connected to the Internet is needed.

Fairly key that the apple aGPS database knows the locations of the WiFi BSSIDs on the underground platforms. It’s still built from gps connected devices witnessing BSSIDs to build the lookup right?
@booklailert
@booklailert 3 года назад
Yep and I’m pretty sure that could work even when not connected to the WiFi
@unknowndomain
@unknowndomain 3 года назад
Exactly, tech firms have been collecting location data of where BSSIDs are for years by using mobile devices to collect and report their location along with the SSIDs they saw and relative signal strength which over time with triangulation has created a far more accurate and quick aGPS system than GPS was originally. From that you can then capture Bluetooth devices locations and report them back to Apple along with the Wifi BSSIDs and get an idea of location. Because each Wi-fi AP has a different BSSID you can tell that something is at a location only when it's also within a place that GPS works at all, this is why the location showed as the entrance to the station rather than the platform. What doesn't likely work is UWB or Bluetooth to find it in the station because TfL and other private companies don't have a way to report the location of BSSIDs that are not within a GPS signal enough to get any kind of accuracy over time.

BLE (BT Low Energy) tag support is in many, if not most, enterprise-class WiFi access-points (e.g. Aruba/HP 300-class and above). If the deployment was properly done then the access point locations are set on a map and they can triangulate between them without the need for an intermediary device like a phone -- the BLE sensing tech is already contained in the access-point.

WiFi doesn’t have like a GPS type of thing. But it came work out where it is due to other WiFi networks around it. (The phone that is) this is how it would get the location not thanks to the WiFi alone and it wouldn’t have some location thing built into it. The WiFi would just be used for connection to the internet and it’s IP address. Just thought I would give a better information as in the video it’s making out like the WiFi has something else in it but it doesn’t.

Brilliant video! I think that once you got to Lombard st and figured out that your keys were in the station itself, you might have been able to use UWB to find their precise location. However, I will point out one potential flaw in your methodology, though in reality I don’t think it will have made a difference - flight mode on Apple Watch does not disable Bluetooth. You might have turned it off manually off camera, though, I would understand not showing that particular nitpicky detail.

This is what happened couple of weeks ago. My wife flew overseas through Gatwick, I saw her off, on my way back home she phoned me from the plane taking off to say she’d lost her iPad at airport. I go home to Docklands, have a coffee then go back to Gatwick with MacBook Pro 16 signed in as her to locate it at the security gates. It showed up roughly there in the security area (not very accurately), as did my new iPhone 12 mini (purp) with me (which was providing the personal hotspot wifi to MBP). Security staff very helpful, I perched with MacBook on a security gate waiting till they weren’t so busy. I said I’d set it to ping it. They found it, I proved it was hers to their satisfaction, yet all that time no pinging occurred. Anyway, train back to Docklands again, and the very moment I walked back through the door it started pinging and also displayed a lost message my wife had made happen. Only as soon as it got into the house did it ping or do any of the ‘I’m lost’ things. Yet ‘find my…’ on the MBP kind of located it roughly, anyway, with updating sort of every half hour. Funnily, we were just talking about getting air tags few days before she flew (mainly to put on our folding bikes). I also mentioned that it might be a good idea to sign into the public wifi in such places (although was hard to tell if the multiple choices of Gatwick wifi were all free or I’d end up paying for whichever confusing option I chose, so I stayed well away from it and used my phone hotspot).

Very interesting Geoff, another great video. Great seeing the S/B Northern line platform at Bank. That was one of the last places I worked on London Underground as a handback engineer in October 2020. I would to know what the progress is of the BSCU project (Bank Station Capacity Upgrade), as it looks like nothing has been done since I left?

Yup! Plenty of people have got them and attached them to their bikes in case they get stolen …

Would these work for something like a stolen car if they were tucked away behind the trim somewhere I wonder?
