I have the Milwaukee saw and after I got it, I quit using my Husqvarna. No more fuel can and oil mix. Now all I pack is a couple of batteries, a few files, some bar and chain oil and a spare chain. Here in NE Kansas all I cut is hedge and black locust. My Milwaukee chews through all of it. I have had mine for 4 years now and want Milwaukee to come out with a bigger one. I have a lot of huge hedge and black locust tree's on our property.

Battery has it's place for short duration cutting sessions but for larger projects that involves hours worth of cutting gas is still king. A jug of gas will keep a saw going all day long. It would cost a fortune in expensive spare batteries to do the same and recharging them becomes a limitation out in the field. I love my Makita 36V saw but each extra battery kit costs $219.

My 3xperience exactly. Keep the electric in the tractor for blow downs and trimming. Might use it for topping trees. Gas is better if you will be using it for hours. No electrics are big enough for really big trees.

I go with these others replies below, however, the big plus for me is I can use it inside in my shop all winter., Keep it really sharp and think really big circular saw and you will reach for it often. Yes the batteries cost the earth but they power all sorts of tools (same system) so they just go into the rotation with the other batteries.

P.S. the other nice thing about a battery saw is that it can come to the rescue if your gas saw get's pinched in the cut.

I carry a solar generator to recharge batteries in the woods. We built a dock last year and the unit ran my hammer drill, air compressor, nail gun, and kept drill batteries charged. Nifty piece of technology. You are correct. I use the battery saws for quick jobs due to the ease of use, but they aren't going to replace a Husqvarna any time soon.

I think we are at a place where most of the 2 stroke residential folks use - even with larger properties - can be replaced with battery power. I’m talking trimmers, blowers, edgers, hedge clippers, etc. The only advantage the 2 stroke stuff has is in duration of use. But that doesn’t really impact residential when you have a couple or 3 batteries. As for saws, the cordless pole saws are simply amazing. I also have an 18” chain saw that is perfect for my couple of wooded acres. For the pros, however… you, would need a lot of batteries to keep going all day. And they will fail over time… and you would have a lot of charging to do overnight - think banks of chargers on separate circuits. Hey, here’s irony at its best… running a GAS POWERED generator in the field to keep enough batteries charged for your saws 😀

Several years ago I had a shoulder injury and couldn't pull the starter cord on a chainsaw, but had a lot of wood that needed to be cut. I bought an electric chainsaw which allowed me to cut all of my wood. After my shoulder healed, I put the saw up on the shelf where it has set for the last six years and have been using my gas saws ever since and have never looked back.

I’ve heard the battery ones cut really well and are generally lighter. My concern is living in the desert southwest charging the batteries while out in the field is a bit risky. I heard a person in Arizona had the battery catch fire which unfortunately destroyed his truck as well. Just something to think about if you live in warmer climates. Thanks guys!

I have had a little bit to do with servicing the Stihl MSA saws, customers tend to forget bar chain oil,as will fuel powered saws this is filled at the same time, but they seem to be learning slow to top off the oil every battery change, another area that can be a safe issues, that with gas powered saws they sit and idle and let know they are dangerous with the noises, were as grab the throttle with electric and go from silent to a weapon in a split second

I'm subscribed to some arborists and logging channels and you'd be surprised how many of them use battery saws. Most use them to brush out a tree. Some of those limbs are pretty hefty. Granted, those saws don't normally use the stock bar and chain, but man do they cut. And the batteries last a surprisingly long time.

I have gas and battery tools for many outdoor tasks and this is what I have discovered. 1) Due to its ease of use compared to gas, I always use a battery powered tool if it can handle the job. 2) Each year that goes by, I use my battery powered tools more and more and my gas tools less and less as the batteries and tools get better and better. Some interesting comments here by folks who say they'll use gas tools and vehicles till the day they die. That may be a promise one shouldn't make. Life is beautiful so let's live long and prosper.

I Used battery powerd drills/screw guns in my contracting business for almost 20 yrs. I quit that business in 2007 so you know it was a long time ago that I started using them. I use the dickens out of the Skill mod. 9020. Great drill. Only problem was the drills (some of them were rebuilt a time or two) out lasted the batteries and they finally quit making the batteries. So now I have three drills and down to one battery and one charger that still works. As long as you are ready to gamble as to the life of the battery and charger against the life of the tool... go ahead. For something that will last a lifetime and still not have to be thrown away.. go gas!!! Of you're going to be cutting a lot of wood... go gas. The battery units are more ideal for the 5 or 10 min. trim job.
@superman9772

totally agree with you... the batteries available don't match the job yet ...and if they'd agree on a "universal" battery and charger then it'd go a lot easy to sell it to me... i went out and got me a couple of extra gassers to tide me over for a few years til they figure it out...

As far as batteries getting discontinued, you can often get adapters to use another same-voltage battery from a different manufacturer. Check online. I have the 12" 20-volt DeWalt saw and I've used it for trimming and taking down shrubs. I use the XR 5ah batteries. A fully charged one lasts through each session. No complaints at all for my needs.

@@superman9772 even Black & Decker cannot do a universal battery pack for all their brands. Ticks me off. I have both DeWalt and Craftsman 20v tools, and of course I have two lines of batteries. If I didn't get so many deals on kits, I would have bought the adapters to use each other's batteries. Then they have Porter Cable and B&D tools, none of which are compatible with the others. Make them physically and electrically the same, make them all black so they fit into the various color schemes. B&D really blew the chance to sell lots of tools that would use the universal battery. Duh.

@@MazichMusic well, my personal obstacle to the switch is that i got about 10 hectares (bout 25 acres) of cedar, oak, birch, dogwood, sassafra and my dying ash... i've been harvesting and thinning out some of my cedar for a cordwood cabin and taking out the ash and trying to find a use for it ... between my small chainsaws and my sawzall (with those amazing diablo blades) i can take out most of the invasive russian olive and the bradford pear (per the state conservation advice and regulation) but currently there's no way that a battery chainsaw is going to get the job done on the mid to large trees (or even some of the small ones)... i can't imagine a professional tree climber or logger ever making the switch with the status of the "current" (pun intended) technology... and then also you'll have to consider the bearings and just the wear and tear on the tool coupled with the expense of repair... i know "they" are going to probably require a license/permit of some kind in the near future for gassers but if they do, then i can imagine some crazy wildfires and more invasive non-native trees and thus a declining tree health and environment because of the inability to manage the woods... just seems like a lot of social costs for a minimal return... but in an urban setting where the property owner takes out a branch every other year then sure a battery chainsaw is okay but the professional coming in to remove a tree or tree management is probably going to have to use a gasser...

Battery powered saws are great for climbing and cutting small trees etc. But when it comes to felling/clean up, nothing beats a gas powered saw.

April said something very important and I wonder if most missed it. Using the worlds longest extension cord. What about using an electric generator converted to the DC voltage needed for a battery powered chainsaw? I don't know if a generator would use less fuel than a gas chainsaw but would be interesting to find out.

I’ve had quite a bit of experience with my dewalt 16 inch 20 volt chainsaw. It cuts a lot better than many people give them credit for. It’s not really fast enough for any dangerous cuts but it’s awesome at bucking and trail cutting. I carry my battery sawzall with large carbide blade a battery hedge trimmer to clear out my trails, they all share the same type battery, I use the gas saw when I need to make a lot of big pieces into small pieces lol

Batteries have their place like in flashlights and even tools like drills. But when it comes to high-drain tools like chainsaws and lawnmowers I think they are a gimmick. I live in the suburbs and have a gas mower because I have a relatively large yard. But my line trimmer, leaf blower, chain saw and pole saw are corded electric. The same extension cord can power all of them and doesn't wear out and need to be replaced at high cost, and corded tools aren't tempermental like 2-stroke engines.

I have a Stihl 120C battery powered saw that is about 7-8 yrs old. It has always performed poorly. In warm weather, it is OK for 2-3" limbs, but anything bigger is a struggle. If the temp is below freezing, it won't even cut a small limb. Stalls almost immediately upon starting the cut. Maybe I just got a bad one, but to say that I am unimpressed is an understatement.

I have 11 chainsaws between my pole saws, limb saws, and all the others. 3 are battery-powered. A Stihl 16". A Ryobi 14" 40v. A Ryobi 12" pole saw. I've heard people say they're "just as good " as a gas saw... but they're not. They cut fine but don't even come close to the power of a Husqvarna or Stihl. They are absolutely an excellent tool for certain types of work. Today, I needed to cut down two dead fruit trees, and I used the Ryobi. I didn't need gas mix. I just threw the Ryobi in the Gator and did the job. For limbing and cutting smaller wood They are so much easier than a gas saw. I have a Stihl gas pole saw and basically don't use it anymore. It's so darned heavy that it wears me out. The Ryobi will do pretty much anything that heavy Stihl will do. We cut down 2 standing dead red oaks in December. Probably 3-4' diameter. I didn't touch the battery saws. A 24" Husqvarna is the superior tool for that job. I also have the 40v Ryobi blower and hedge trimmer. I haven't used the Stihl backpack blower in 3 years nor the Stihl gas hedge trimmer. The battery units beat them, hands down. Weed whacker? I have the Ryobi, but it's not nearly as good as a gas trimmer.

I have 4 battery chainsaws at work, including a top end 20” bar premium brand. I personally own a petrol stihl 180 14” bar and it beats them all hands down. The battery saws have a few definite advantages but overall they’re not up to pro standards yet. 1 of the 12 AH batteries runs as long as a full tank. If you only use 2 batteries a day then fine but they cost £200 each here in the UK. With a strimmer it’s even worse, if I want to strim all morning I need 4 of those batteries to keep me running as a minimum. They’re expensive and take time to recharge. As for leaf blowing, it’s even worse.

The issues always will be, like they are for every other situation, where, battery power is replacing mains electricity or internal combustion. Energy density, it is very hard to beat, liquid fuels for volume and weight for the amount of energy. Recharge/refuel time, once you get to the point of recharging, this takes a hell of lot more time than refueling. The third issue is cost, both the machines and the batteries cost a lot more, than the mains or liquid fuel items. Angle grinders are a reasonable comparison Now I own, my fair share of angle grinders, ranging from 4 inch to 9 inch. ( don't ask why a sound man needs so many angle grinders). Currently here in AU, a corded 700/750 watt 5 inch angle grinder in any of the decent brands will cost you around $100, a comparable battery powered angle grinder SKIN only will cost you around $200 - $250, a 5 AH, 18 volt battery will cost you around $150. this is all current prices with no deals or promotions. Now I have similar name brand 5 inch grinders in both mains power and battery power. Yeh the battery powered grinder is very handy and convienient, but the run time is quite short, the grinder with a 5AH battery is more bulky and heavier than the mains powered grinders and yes the recharge time IS a real issue. For a bit of short duration trimming, a light 12 inch battery powered chain saw could be quite handy, but try to do a days work with a battery powered machine, you are going to need a lot of batteries. The bigger the machine the less viable battery power becomes. Consider too, that a lot of chain saw work is done away from mains electricity. I've been saying it for decades, cordless is the fantasy of the modern age. The greenies and the battery power fantacists are all talking about the "comming battery technologies", well, lithium batteries have been around for many decades and there have not been any great advances in power or density and none of the proposed or claimed battery technologies will provide us with any great advantage in weight, cost or energy density, inspite of claims and dreams otherwise. Just for $#!ts and giggles, there are petrol powered angle grinders available.

Wow, I wasn't expecting THAT response. Let me just add my 2 cents. If you are a tradesman, using tools or have a set of tools that use the same battery, they are a good idea. If you are a hobbyist that might pick up the item once a year.... Nah. It's gonna need a new battery almost every time you pick it up. Yes they are handy, but I only have mains machines, and a long extension cord. The battery drills I bought crapped out, and while they were good drills, I cannot get replacement batteries. One of my drills a Makita is about 45 years old, and despite brutalising it on a couple of occasions... smell of hot plastic, it is only on it's second set of brushes.

I find they are great for light use and homeowner's. Stihl and a few other manufacturers are bringing out bigger more professional based saws. Only issues I see with any battery powered items are that the cold can effect the batteries especially if you store them in a non heated room and at the dealership i work at in the UK a minus temperature and our cold building which is literally a shed with no central heating, can cause batteries to play up.

They definitely have their place. For the homeowner like me who need to be able to do some work here and there.. maybe clean up an old fence line (which is exactly what I did), they are perfect. I wear out before the batteries do. I have 2 spares when one dies, I throw it on the charger, pop another one in and keep going. By the time I'm on my third battery, the first one is charged fully again and I can just keep swapping them around like that. The best part is, I can leave the saw sitting for a year or two (or more) and when I want to use it again, I can just pop a battery in and go right to work, no worries with bad gas or gummed up carb. Now.. If I were a lumberjack and worked in the woods.. then no. They are absolutely not the right tool at this time. Maybe one day if they can get the battery technology right. For this homeowner though, I'll never go back to gas.

My issue with the battery is not the amount of time It lasts on a single charge, but rather the longevity over time. Most of these batteries only last 3 to 4 years under optimal conditions. Meaning, optimal storage, charging, etc. I’m not sure what volt battery is powerful enough for a chainsaw (18V, 24V, 40V, etc.), but at over $200 per battery on the larger ones is too expensive to replace every three years. I believe they have their place but I do like gas. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your time.

Right guys. If and only if (from my math days ) battery saws' batteries were much mucho less $$$$ so I could really use them in the field with extra batts, I would buy one. AND, if they were the same $$$$ as my same size gas saws, I would get one. Butt now they are too expensive, weigh the same or more as gas saws, and don't last for serious work. It will come, not now. Ideal for climbing however. JMNSHO

I have used some battery operated outdoor lawn care equipment and have been disappointed and underwhelmed where battery life is concerned. It sucks when you are in the middle of a job and it just dies at different intervals based on load and size of project. Carrying batteries is truly inconvenient. Batteries are quite a bit heavier than a single jug of mix gas that can last for almost the whole day. I'll stick with my gas saw. It's so much easier to mix up one large can of gas once than it is to charge a bunch of batteries every day and hope their life doesn't diminish over time or simply crap out al together. Plus One battery costs as much as many cans of gas. There is also the heat stress issue that can kill batteries and machines. They can simply stall out if they get overheated.

From what I’ve read the have about a 1000 cycle recharge. Depending on how often you use them I have to believe the info. I am not ready to sell my Stihl chainsaw but am apprehensive to give it up only for the fact after a severe storm it is likely you will lose power. The battery saws will be a one hit wonder unless you have a generator to charge them.

If your day is 1-2 tanks of essence then battery electric is fine, if your saw comes with a spare battery or a quick charger. When you start having to buy extra $200 batteries to replace a $2 tank of gas is stops making economic sense for the small time user. You'd have to run each battery through about 120-130 cycles before you'd start saving money. When you test them Steve, have a look at the saw's build quality compared to gas and try to judge if it can handle that extra torque, and will it last?
