Here is a thought: Hagrid has his wand inside his umbrella. What if one could place their wand inside their broom. Or in fact several wands. Could they have a "spell gattling gun"? Imagine wizarding warfare if they figured that one out.

I like this theory but when Harry's broom slams into the Whomping Willow and breaks, it's described as just splinters and there's no mention of a core. But when Ron's wand breaks and Harry's holly wand breaks, the core is described as being visible or holding some of the pieces together. So I would think that if a broomstick had a core, it would have shown up when the Nimbus 2000 broke

That's a good point. I suppose you could excuse the lack of reference to a core by saying a broom has a lot more wood relative to the core so it wasn't noticeable, that the core fell out and wasn't in any of the remains they recovered, or that the core is made of something the could be mistaken as a wood splinter or a fine twig originating from the tail.

in my opinion it's probably not that brooms have a core but rather the source of the wood. for instance how during the bowtruckle lesson it's mentioned that they live in trees of "wand making quality" which implies that wand wood needs to come from specific trees not just any tree. so it would make sense to me that maybe the wood for a broomstick needs to come from tree's with specific properties. Also there are known magical plants that seem to float/ fly on their own such a dirigible plums.

One of Harry's accidental pieces of magic is flying onto the bin shed and thinking the 'wind' caught him. Supports the idea that being a good flyer is not just athleticism, but is actually an innate ability to channel magic in a certain way. Voldemort has obviously become strong/skilled enough to channel it directly, rather than needing the broom. Definitely on board with the idea that brooms work like wands!

I suppose the biggest arguments against the brooms having cores are all the other flying objects like Sirius's flying motorcycle, Arthur's flying Ford Anglia, Barty Crouch Snr grandfathers 12 seat Axminster and the niche market Ali Bashir was trying to open up despite there being an embargo on importing flying carpets to Britain. Arthur Weasley says himself that "carpets are defined as a Muggle Artefact by the Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects". I imagine a broomstick as just being another charmable object but a little more refined.

But why would they _need_ a core if charms could just give them the same desired effect? Even the argument that the magical cores is what grants objects sentience doesn’t quite make sense for brooms when Arthur’s flying car has way more personality than any other inanimate object, including all the wands we see throughout the series. I suppose you could argue that Arthur somehow stuck a “core” inside of his car since they do suggest he’s been pulling it apart and replacing parts rather than just enchanting the thing. It wouldn’t seem out of the question that he switched the engine into something magical, seeing as the car definitely isn’t running on fuel and would no longer need an engine. This could also be the reason why the car is another level of “alive”, Arthur isn’t well enough researched to know what level of magical object should be applied to give an object just the right amount of sentience to obey a wizard but not have a mind of it’s own. And it’s plausible that flying carpets are somehow weaved with some magical element as well. Or that the lack of magic is the reason they’re not allowed, because they just don’t work as well when they’re purely magic through use of charms and not magic within themselves.

@@Cllocopine I mean it could also be related to the fact that spells and charms wear off. Dumbledore remarks that Harry's invisibility cloak is special because it won't wear out, unlike those that have a charm placed upon them. And with a broomstick, I don't think you would want them to start failing mid-flight. Cores being more permanent than charms could also explain why brooms are manufactured rather than just having witches and wizards make one themselves.

@@rosettekinney8587 That, and the supporting fact that muggles would technically be able to ride a broomstick if it’s just a charm alone. So having a core would help restrict it to the wizards. I more or less also wonder who makes the broomsticks if normy wizards can’t make their own fastest broomstick. Because I never got a mention of the maker, at least in the movies. Some other sources could potentially explain that.

Even for the wand, the wood actually matters a lot. At one point, Hagrid teaches the class about Bowtruckles and says that they are guardians of trees with magical wood or wand trees. My guess is that broomsticks are made from the same trees, not regular trees. And since the description of the Firebolt which is very detailed, doesn't mention a core, I'd say they don't have a magical core.

@@Shenron557 I could be over thinking, but maybe its because the car actually was an enchantment, which is more of a permanent magic. A broom could be in use of an unthinking flight charm, a temporary magic. Just speculating, have a good day.

I've always wondered how the brooms that Harry saw the kids ridding while at the quitich world cup were some how enchanted to only fly a few feet off of the ground. Also how would the kids be able to make them fly? Either there is some flight limiting charm or there is indeed a flight charm. Or perhaps a levitation charm that can maintain its self?

They were purposely made for kids so probably do have a charm to limit how far they can lift up. Maybe a much weaker levitation charm. Harry himself had a kiddy broom as a baby

I don't know how to direct this to you, but can you please do a theory on how Voldemort is actually scared of Hagrid. And actually try to get him expelled from Hogwarts. Being that Hagrid is half Giant that means he's resistant to most spells. And at the time he was expelled from Hogwarts in his 3rd year he was already taller than most of the teachers. He has also aligned himself with Dumbledore. And the Headmaster liked him enough to allow him to work at Hogwarts. Next, Hagrid is very good at casting Magic almost all the Spells he does cast in the books are wordless ( nonverbal magic is not even taught to students till their sixth year) and done with a broken wand, showing that he really doesn't need a wand to focus his magic that much. Voldemort saw all this and knew that he would be a great wizard in the future that could actually fight him.

I feel like if broomsticks did have cores, instead of each individual one getting a different core like wands, each instance of a particular model would have the same type of core. Like Comet 260s all have pegasus feather cores, Firebolts all have phoenix feather cores, etc. The type of core could also be picked to serve a different purpose depending on the intended use, just like the wood; for example, hippogriff feather cores for endurance for long flights, thestral hair cores for acceleration, snidget feather cores for sharp turns, etc. (Actually, I think snidgets went extinct, but you know what I mean.)

The broom wasn't given to Harry by the school though, but by McGonagall. And yes that was an advantage, but he is also incredibly talented and practices a LOT. Just to clear that up

Literally the very first charm they learn is Wingardium Leviosa - a charm to make objects fly. Is a broomstick not an object? A lot of SCB's theories are great. This one isn't.

Does everything from the Mirror of Erised, to the Hogwarts Express, to the moving paintings, to the moving statues (and chess pieces and flying keys), to the vanishing cabinet to invisibility cloaks, to the Marauder's Map, to the Deluminator, to every Golden Snitch ever used in a Quidditch game (yet another flying object), to the "Potter Stinks" buttons, etc., all have "cores"?

I LOVE AND ACCEPT THIS THEORY!! Also a few ideas on cores: what if the core did in fact come from a magical flying animal but it was specifically from that part of the anatomy that assisted with the flying? For example: Phoenix Wing Feather - specifically different from the tail feather in this case I'd imagine Hippogriff Feather - that sounds like a dangerous job based on Hagrid's comment Dragon Wing Bone - sounds cruel but they're already using the heartstrings for wands Thestral Tendon - again probably a little too cruel but I imagine these would be rather rare because just getting them would be difficult due to the nature of even finding them Sorry got a little dark there but you get the point.

Just saying to the point of having no flying charm available, there are documented cases of other objects being enchanted to fly. The most obvious of which is the Weasely's flying car - a muggle artifact that was retroactively made to fly. Definitely no core in that. Also flying carpets are reported to be a thing, so not likely to have a core either. I think that there probably is some kind of flying charm, you just have to use it on an object, not a person, or casting it on a person is really hard to control the flight or something.

To that same point though, the car did seem to have it's own "thoughts" much like Harry asked Ollivander at Shell Cottage- "you talk about wands as if they can think" at that point the car is similar to a wand in that regard- why couldn't broomsticks work the same way? ...

There are probably several layers to Mr. Weasely's modifications to the car, maybe needing to apply multiple spells and enchantments to different parts of the vehicle. If that's the case, it might be the case that a broom just doesn't have enough components to it for the amount of magical layering needed to make flight possible. Alternatively, it might be *possible* to enchant an object to be able to fly... But the process is so complex and/or inefficient that it's just not worth the effort in most cases. If that's the reasoning, the idea of a "broom core" might be the wizarding world's away around the inneficiency of levitation charms.

@@osmarcastillo5496 What's the difference? Do the flying inter-office memos used in the Ministry (cleaner than using owls), not fly? How about the keys that Flitwick enchanted in the first book? How about the Golden Snitches that are used in Quidditch all over the wizarding world? All of these are objects, and they have wings, and they fly. There are so many flying objects in Harry Potter, I think the SCBs were having a serious off day when they made this video.

Love the idea that a broom would have a core and that they basically do better as they bond with the wizard. When there was mention of a "boomstick", had an image of Ash from "Army of Darkness" flying around on his boomstick. There may be potential there.

In regards to building connection between Wizard/witch, you missed out on how harry felt when he found out the nimbus has been smash to bits. He felt like he had lost a friend and someone had died. Which is interesting as he had the broom only 3 years.

I've had a hypothesis for a while now that most magical items were once living creatures like mice or dragonflies. Why? Because in Transfiguration class, the kids spend a tremendous amount of time learning to turn small critters into a variety of otherwise mundane items. Being that the item was once a living thing, it reasons that the item itself has the spirit of the critter still within it. This spirit is what a wizard interacts with when he operates a magical item.

Nice idea but correct if I’m wrong. I thought that most transfigurations, especially those performed by inexperienced, young wizards, were temporary. Meaning that the items would eventually turn back to critters.

Related Question: If Ollivander were to make an exact replica of Harry's wand - so he picks up wood from the same Holly tree, gets a third feather from Fawkes and makes another 11" Holly wood Phoenix feather nice and supple wand - would that wand also choose Harry? Or would that replica "know" that it's a replica and choose someone else? 🤔 P.S.: Love your content all the way back in Germany 👍

Right now I've got some Phineas and Ferb in my head that episode where they are flying on this area rug... You can't see much of the skyline it looks like more of a grid it's a viable variation of you but it's something I'm sure will be glad we did it's not like the world that we see from the ground I'm guessing the main difference is we're looking down so climb on our aerial area rug it's certain to keep us aloft it's aerodynamics are highly advanced and it's weave is so tight and so soft though this vistas diverse is it better or worse if you'll ask I'll just give you a shrug but you can vary your view of the area from our aerial area rug it's a Brand New perspective literally we can see the tops of buildings come along with me you can vary your view of the area from our aerial area rug you can vary your view of the area from our area rug

I really like this theory and I think it has some interesting applications. I like to think that depending on what creature's part you use it would affect the broom's properties as well. A pegasus feather broom, for instance, might take a little longer to accelerate, but once it does it would have more speed, force, and stability than many others. A thestral hair broom would be smoother and quieter, and might even grant the rider an enhanced sense of direction or something. For me personally, I think I'd be most comfortable with a gryphon fur broom. What it lacks in acceleration and speed it could make up for in stability, steering, and maneuvering. Hmmmm.... It just occurred to me how Neville's broom in PS/SS was pretty aggressive and clearly didn't respect Neville as a rider. The way it bucked around on the wall in the movie also reminded me a lot of a horse or donkey. And we just so happen to know about a flying creature that is part horse and can certainly be pretty aggressive if not shown proper respect, several of which are present at Hogwarts 2 years later. Anybody else think the school brooms are made with hippogryph feathers?

For the record I agree with you about the cores of broomsticks, however flying charms must exist in the Wizarding world as evidenced by flying carpets, the Ford Anglia that was enchanted by Arthur Weasley and Sirius' motorcycle. None of those items are wood or have cores like wands do.

Most things can be fixed with a quick Reparo charm. The only things we KNOW FOR A FACT that cannot are wands and brooms (if you're a wizard and tried Reparo on a carbon fiber bike and it didn't work, let us know so we can change this). Tbe reason we know it doesn't work on brooms is because Harry's Nimbus isn't fixed. They don't even think to try.

I would have to disagree, because they have said in the past that the Elder Wand isn't actually stronger than any other wands, its just got a powerful reputation and wants to be owned by the most powerful wizard (hence why it didn't win like any battles in the series, because it purposely lost so that it could be owned by the newer, more powerful wizard)

I know it's not really canon, but in the 1st book of the unofficial sequel series James Potter, there is a throw away line about this. One of the main characters is talking about a Quidditch League player who was banned because he was caught "corking" his broom. From what I recall, it involved hollowing out the broom stick and adding a core, implying they don't have one normally. Again, probably not canon, but thought I'd mention it.🤷‍♂️

But a chimerical animal that is basically just two creatures stuck together like centaurs or manticores, id argue that they are inherently magical by virtue of their existence. When I think of magic, or _sorcery_ as I've come to call the use of _the Aether_ to affect the environment in a significant way, things like making a chimera do not readily come as part of that, but are indeed not far off, since both involve the understanding of _object properties._ All chimera are splices of genetics; as a result, they each in turn have potentially similar but distinct properties from that of the genetics they were made from. A centaur (humanoid/horse) would be no different. Of course, the mechanics involved in splicing genetics, and keeping the genetics from self-destructing/rejecting, can be done with sorcery, but not exclusively.

Hear me out: We know that the core of a wand produces most of its magical effects, including the semi-sentience that allows it to, for example, recognize ownership. Brooms aren't quite as sentient, but perhaps they still are made out of more than normal wood - They could be made out of the wood of magical, bow-truckle hosting trees, the same that produce wand-quality wood!

this is my theory as well. but SCBs seem to think that wands are made out of ordinary wood. they missed the mark in so many ways on this one. there is such a thing as flying charms the wood used for wands is special there are many objects that fly in the wizarding world besides brooms. etc.

I often use anime as a frame of reference for trying to understand Wizarding World magic, especially "The Irregular at Magic High School." In Irregular, Tatsuya invents a Casting Assistance Device specifically for flying. This is their cultural analog for a broom. The main practical difference between specialized CADs like this and generalized CADs (which is what a wand would be) is that specialized CADs can only perform a limited number of spells (maximum of nine). Flying requires up, accelerate, decelerate, down, left and right and Tatsuya added a safety parachute feature in case of a malfunction. So by those standards, wands are generalized casting devices and brooms are specialized casting devices.

I may be a bit rusty with my knowledge as it has been a while since I read Quidditch through the ages but I am sure it talks about how in ancient times broomsticks were only able to do basic movements but eventually the found better charms that could allow them to fly like in the books, this also fits with the flying car as we are told that it was bewitched by Mr Weasley.

Beyond the fact that there do indeed appear to be flying charms (re, Malfoy insulting Ron and the flying car), I always figured there was something special in the way they're made like how you have to do specific actions and add things just right to a potion. To me the most logical place for a "core" of sorts would be in the first wrap tying the first sticks to the end of the broom. Fun thought experiment though!

A possible explanation for how Voldemort can fly is that it could be possible that his body counts as an object. Since he was reborn he doesn't entirely have what you would call a "natural" body. This could mean that the body we see is actually more of his body possessing a Flesh Golem. This would make it possible for him to channel his magic through his body(an object). This would also explain why it was an unknown ability until after he was resurrected.

I actually came up with a character once for a D&D-type campaign who discovered he was a wizard because he was able to levitate for a few seconds on a large broken branch; his parents took that branch and used its wood to handmake both his broomstick and his wand, so obviously they matched. My stance on whether the wood of a broom and a wand should match or not is, as long as the wizard's innate magic resonates with the wood in the right way, it doesn't matter if the broom and wand have the same wood. I agree as well that brooms probably have cores - and I think it's likely that they usually have the flight feathers of not only pegasi, but also griffins, hippogriffs, and even magical birds (it wouldn't take much for their feathers to be long enough; the American Condor has primaries that are nearly three feet long).

Actually, in the Goblet of Fire, Arthur Weasley talk about flying carpet being imported into the country. As far as magical cores for broomsticks, they should have three requirements. 1) The core has to be from a creature that flies 2) The core has to come from a magical creature 3) And, in my opinion, most important, the core has to be a VERY common item (my personal thinking is that it is a feather of some kind, whether from a hippogriff, a manticore, or a pegasus or some other flying creature)

Is it not true that Draco says something similar to “Who would put a flying charm on something like that?”. This implies that there is indeed some sort of existing flying charm. However, it could also be that these flying charms don’t work on humans or perhaps that the spell would be some combination of a levitation charm and some sort of spell that can make objects move more forwards and backwards as supposed to just up and down and that they therefore don’t work on humans. Anyways, good theory as always and keep it up.

Wingardium Leviosa is a charm that makes objects fly. IIRC, Hagrid (or someone) later uses a charm to make some Christmas trees fly. Levicorpus makes a person "fly" under your control. Could you cast Levicorpus on yourself? Flying cars, flying carpets, flying motorcycles. There seems to be way too many flying objects for anyone to claim that there is no flying charm.

Because J mentioned the World Cup- there’s a theory that Ron is Psychic as he made a ton of comments throughout the books esp in regards to his assignments for Divination class that ended up coming true without him or anyone else really picking up on it. So my new theory is that Fred and George DID pick up on it somehow over the years, perhaps since Ron talks in his sleep occasionally they started taking note of his random predictions. They of course never told him because if Ron ever realized and actually tried to hone/control his ability he would either over think it and end up miserable knowing the future or just the fact that he might ruin the “surprise” pranks they loved. Either way when one night that summer Ron mumbles about Krum catching the snitch but Ireland winning the cup the twins knew exactly how to bet on the game!

Honestly though I think those brooms in flying class have some sort of magic like pixie dust kind of BS put on them so they can respond to wandless magic like when the kids are told to put their hand above them and just say up and they respond to that cuz that's not a spell so clearly they don't require any sort of spell to be used the only spell I recall ever being involved with a broom with the accio charm to summon them also in that letter from Lily to serious thanking him for the toy broomstick that 15 month old Harry was flying around the room on scaring the cat apparently it only went like a foot or two up in the air yeah a 15 month old baby couldn't have made that happen it had to be a charm put on the toy

Ehh, we see plenty of examples of wandless/non contact magic. When Harry was being attacked by the dementors at the beginning of order of the Phoenix he’s looking for his wand and says “lumos”, his wand then lights up. Harry also does lots of magic before he even gets his wand, ending up on the school roof, growing his hair, shrinking dudleys jumper.

In Deathly Hallows when he's returning from Nurmengard and feels the call of the Death Eaters, there's mention of him flying to be close enough to apparate and that was probably just because apparition has a range limit and Nurmengard has anti-apparition protection similar to Hogwarts.

What about toy broomsticks? Wizarding children use these to fly around inches off the ground, however they must be made differently as I don't think they'd design them for channeling young magic (So much could go wrong). You also forgot to mention flying carpets and the Weasley's famous flying car. Flying carpets are classified as enchanted muggle objects (And the Weasley's car), so it doesn't sound like they're being woven with thestral hair in them. Although you may be right about the broomsticks, there has got to be *some* sort of flying spell that can be applied to objects. Perhaps a more controllable and permanent form of Locomotor or Wingardium Leviosa.

In the Prisoner of Azkaban Harry's Fire Bolt was "stripped down" to check if the broom had been jinxed, hexed, or cursed. I for one always assumed that broomsticks were heavily enchanted especially when Fred and George talked about the old school brooms flying a little to the left. We know enchantments weaken with time like Ron's description of invisibility cloaks or the limited lifespan of Fred and George's headless hats. It's most likely the materials used in the broom accentuate the enchantments. Brooms don't seem to be sentient in the same way wands are.

I love the core theory, but I still have some questions, thoughts and theories. 13:30 It’s mentioned in the books (I believe by Hagrid?-or maybe Grubbly-Plank) that bowtruckles only inhabit trees of wand wood quality, implying that not all trees are of the caliber to produce wands. I think that actually would affect a wizard’s ability to channel their magic through a Holly stick, per say. Of course, it still wouldn’t be a wand without a core, but I do think that might make a difference. Theory: maybe only certain trees are of broomstick quality, for both body and twigs? Maybe a slightly lower quality than that of wand wood trees.

Interesting theory. It could also explain why broomsticks are canonically so expensive. Slughorn said unicorn tails were worth 10 Galleons a hair. That's quite a bit even disregarding that wand cores probably require higher quality hair than the hair Hagrid collects only after they've fallen out/been pulled out of the unicorn by accident. Wands only need a single hair but it's likely that a broom would require several since the wood is so much thicker.

Query: can you use core material to channel magic without the wooden casing? Like, would one of Fawkes' feathers be a viable wand by itself?

I think the Magick would go all over the place as feathers have multiple little hair like things pointed I different directions and not straight towards the tip. Maybe if you put a hardening solution to make all the hairs point towards the tip.

It is rare to encounter an opportunity to correct J and Ben, especially when it comes to HP, but Hagrid’s wand was 16 inches not 15 as mentioned. I’d also add that the Elder wand is the an exception to the “can’t repair wands” rule as Harry uses it in Deathly Hallows to repair his own wand. Personally, I’d want a Thunderbird feather core in both wand and broom. Other possible broom cores could include materials gathered from: Thestrals, Phoenixes, Hippogriffs, Dragons, and Pegasi (or other winged horses). On a side note, I’m curious as to why we haven’t heard of hippogriff wand cores.
